  • Dr. Karyn Purvis and the Institute of Child Development have released their latest DVD entitled Attachment: Why It Matters.
This two-DVD set explores the critical role of attachment in a child's development. Most of us think of attachment as a loving bond between parent and child. But, what happens if a child doesn't get nurturing, consistent care from a loving parent early in life? Can a parent love a child or a child love a parent, but still not feel securely connected? And what are the consequences of insecure attachments?

I think it would have been better if I had been adopted rather than raised by a narcissistic mother and enabling step-father. I am now 50 and have no attachment whatsoever with my mother. I still feel the pain from childhood.

MIFNP I so identify!!!!! Going on 49. My mother and father are still abusing me though I am no contact, they are using my kids to hurt me. They have money to "love" with.

I recommend that you all check out Peter Gerlach on You Tube and his web site. Parenting must be upgraded to nurturing, or the ineffective parenting will just continue its sorry cycle. We are what our early childhood experiences have made us.

I am not sure where Rational Nurse is getting her information. The attachment cycle has been fully researched for many decades. This is quite different from the controversial Holding Therapy.

While no one will argue that attentive care isn't good for infants, the notion of an "attachment cycle" is not validated by research, It is rather something popularlized by "Attachment (Holding) Therapy," a highly abusive fringe psychotherapy.
And I don't know how productive it is to promote a parenting style that emphasizes child-adult relationships in terms of brain development.

She's not talking about 'holding therapy'which is not the same as attachment theory at all... Holding therapy sounds terrible!
