    Health Cookie #2: BDNF is Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, it is a hormone produced by the body whenever it undergoes a form of significant environmental stress. BDNF stimulates the growth of neurons, and can dramatically improve both learning and memory if it is produced by the body on a regular basis. Cold showers, exercise, intermittent fasting, they all cause Hormetic Effects, and Hormetic Effects are, simply put, "benefits to your biology that are obtained through the endurance of environmental stressors". Your muscles becoming stronger after working out, that's a hormetic effect. Your blood circulation improving after a cold shower, that's a hormetic effect. Your body cleaning itself during intermittent fasting or recycling its unwanted cells during Autophagy, those are hormetic effects. Hormetic effects are the positive biological adaptations that occur whenever you expose yourself to extreme conditions, and BDNF production is a crucially important hormetic effect given that it literally empowers your mind and improves neuroplasticity. BDNF is produced by cold showers, exercise, fasting, and most importantly, the consumption of coffee, because the stimulation caused by caffeine is yet another biological stress which has the resultant hormetic effect of producing BDNF. This means you can produce BDNF literally every single day, and cumulatively become increasingly powerful in regards both mental and physical, as long as you do one or many of these practices daily.
