Aston Villa look to be challenging for Europe again this season, where they sit in 5th place and just 1 point off the top 4 going into an International Break.
Unai Emery's side are unbeaten at Villa Park where their solid form has helped cement themselves among the Top 6 in the Premier League. But can they maintain this form through-out this season, or will their away form prove to be too poor to maintain the charge?
Sam Tighe joins us to take a look at Villa's chances of actually grabbing a Champions League spot this season

I'm an Arsenal fan. Unai is a fantastic manager. I'm glad we have Arteta. Wouldn't change that for anything. But Unai came to us at the wrong time. Our backroom was a mess and he needed more time than the fanbase could give him. He language barrier was huge. He just needed more grace to grasp the language to transmit his ideas. It's really clear Villa is taking to his tactics. Really happy for those fans because they're a good base.

@@MrDwightKSchrute I meant in relation to Arsenal. As an Arsenal fan myself, no one can deny that he's not an excellent manager. At that time, our dressing room was a little toxic, and so the players got him fired by not playing for him. Also, the Villa players say he's demanding but his style, training and tactics has them with a 60% win rate from 45 or so games, so it clearly works if you stick with him and play like he wants you to play.

@@gentleken7864As a Villa fan I think you are right about his Arsenal time. I think he had the right ideas but I think anyone coming in after Wenger was likely to be a failure as from the owners, board to the players and fans there had to be a mindset change.
My take on Emery, firstly thank you Gerrard for being such an awful Manager in such a short space of time...without him we would not have Emery. He is the right fit for us, we love the guy just as a human being as he is very thoughtful, honest and such a hard worker and he is quite brilliant as well. As fans we are always learning something about the game, so I can't imagine what it must be like for the players as he has improved every single player, we are still virtually the same team that was 17th under Gerrard.

I am really happy that Villa has more and more attention from pundits and Tifo ( something like Newcastle last season). I hope that Emery's boys keep giving them reasons to doing it.
For this video - not so great analysis - nobody spoke about a lot of goals coming from midfield players, a lot of assists coming from wings, comparison between teams we played in home ( some middle and low table teams) against visits ( Liverpool,Newcastle, Chelsea), you mentioned Mings has been injured but not mentioned how Konsa is growing up as leader in defense and ,finally, got an international call-up.... Villa fan here. I'm really pleased to finally see an in depth look at my team on Tifo, and I agree with most of this video, unfortunately the analysis of Villa's shape and Kamara's positional change is not accurate.
Villa under Emery have always played as a 4-4-2 out of possession and 3-2-5 in possession (or 3-box-3 if you prefer). When transitioning from out of possession to in possession, the LB would push up to become the LW, LM tucks into the left half space, second striker drops into the right half space, RM/RW stays wide, 2 CBs and RB would shift across a little to become a back 3. This gives the 3-2-5 shape.
The change that was made recently is that instead of the RM (McGinn) staying wide, the RB (Cash) pushes up to the RW position, RM (McGinn) drops in to the right DM slot, and the right DM (Kamara) drops back to the RCB slot vacated by Cash. The attacking shape has not changed, only this one rotation has been added to change which personnel are in which positions within the shape.

Luckily for Villa there is another transfer window between the ned of the group stages and the start of the knockout rounds in Europe. As such we'll hopefully be able to bring in some more reinforcements. Potentially another RB and maybe a CDM as well as one more attacking player. We have consistently been linked with nico Williams for the past year and if we are in top 4 places come January perhaps he'd be willing to consider us.

I said at start of season, based of transfer window and difficulty of European games that I believe that Villa would cope with the extra games better than Newcastle and Brighton. We have stronger squad depth and the way we play isnt as intensive. Newcastle always going to struggle playing a million miles an hour 3 times a week. I currently measure Villas position by how many points clear of these two teams we are (can start to throw Man Utd in there to a degree and if we get above Spurs as well). if we stay above them we at least get top 6 anything on top of this is a bonus. With our injuries being present from the start we've also had time to adapt as this video shows, all the teams below us that have had fresh injuries now have to adapt on the fly or just hope hope the incoming players can adapt, as we saw with Spurs Vs Wolves, this isnt going to be easy!

And we are getting better week on week. It’s a seriously exciting time. The other thing is - I take your point about conference league but I feel that most Villa fans if we can pretty much guarantee top 6 before the end of the conference run, would rather we went for the league, because that enables more money, more growth and overall it elevates our status on the world stage back to what we used to be. A decent overview of how we're playing but the point about away form doesn't take into account how good our record was last season (1.9ish ppg) and that the corresponding away fixtures last season against Newcastle, Liverpool, Forest, Wolves only yielded 2 points (as opposed to 1 this season). We were brilliant playing away against bottom half teams in 22-23 under Emery and I expect similar results this time around (even if we're playing a more progressive style of football now). If we can keep our home form up and raise the away average to 1.5 ppg then we could finish top 3/4 no problem. Also it's worth mentioning the multiple reasons WHY we are creating so much more xg this season:
    - Flexible build-up play where the threat can come from several dimensions (multiple midfielders who can take the ball under pressure, forwards dropping into the half spaces to receive/lay-off/turn, centre-backs like Pau and Lenglet who can play accurate long passes).
    - More effective and varied ways to play through teams who sit deep (Tielemans wide role vs Fulham for instance)
    - More touches in opp. box (6th this season vs 14th last)
    - More penalties (3 already vs. 3 entire season in 22/23)
    - Luiz having more impact higher up the pitch (his attacking stats now surpass Bruno G, for instance, in most areas).
    - Even more ruthless on the counter
    - Leon Bailey super sub!

Bang on, most of us fans see it this way. Players to come back and we are still improving despite the blip against Forrest. To Emery's credit, every loss is a lesson and we are better thereafter. Kamara, Torres, Bailey and Digne started the season slowly but now on form; Tielemans is at last emerging as the player we hoped for, and Ramsey and Moreno will add depth and hopefully another level of threat to what we have. Diaby is still finding his feet but he will be a killer when fully established. I see better things to come, check again after December's games, this is the litmus test.

Every Villa fan knows the away form needs to improve and it's still far too early to talk about top 4 with only a third of the season gone. The plus for Villa fans is the incremental improvement. Since Unai has come in everyone can see what he's doing and how he's improving players on a weekly basis. He's got everyone at Villa onboard regardless of how this season pans out.
