Hell, Fire And Damnation is an album which sees Saxon investigate all areas of history and mystery amidst ten of their most confident and thunderously powerful songs yet. In “Witches Of Salem”, lead singer and founding member Biff Byford, explores the unjust condemnation of the women victimised at the Salem witch trials and the sheer bigotry and mass hysteria prevalent at the time.
“This is an American story, but the witch trials started in Scotland, spread into England and across the sea to the colonies in America. Those poor women in Salem,” explains Byford “they weren’t ‘witches’ more than just unfortunate women really, blamed for everybody’s ailments... whether your horse died, or the milk went sour, they blamed women. Maybe because they were jealous of them, or maybe it was because some guy had made some advances and she’d told him to piss-off, so he’d declare that she was a witch. And once a person was declared a witch, I don’t think there was any way back from that; very few of them were found innocent.”

I have family from Salem, Mass. I remember the Witch Trial Museum as a kid. 🧹🧹🧹. I had an aunt on a building right over by the cemetery where they buried them all.

I saw them in Tampa last night and they played this live for the first time. This and the rest of the show was incredible!
Just saw Saxon at Tampa's Hard Rock Event Center. It was an incredible concert with great vocals and musicianship. I'm now a Saxon fan after basically ignoring them in my youth. The only song I had listened to more than a few times before this was "Broken Heroes".
For me it's crusader and power and the glory. Broken heroes makes me sad (in a good way) and crusader makes me angry (also in a good way lol)

Mostly over-produced derivative songs, rehashing the sound of older songs. Not even worthy of comparison to the Saxon songs I was listening to 40+ years ago. This is OK. But they lost their writing ability around the time of Crusader or Power & the Glory. A great live band. I saw them at small venues like Derby Assembly rooms and big shows like Monsters of Rock and they were great, when I was 20-something and often drunk as a skunk. But I regret buying the latest album.
