    Glen had the closest assessment imo. He's a 28 year old, nearly 29, and still plays like a 22 year old rookie. His positional sense, timing of runs, and confidence are really bad for his age and experience. It's obvious what happened to him. He got comfortable with the 'superstar' lifestyle off the pitch (never was one on the pitch) and didn't make an effort to progress and improve as a player, and Arsenal are the perfect club to facilitate this lack of ambition and comfortable, unpressured lifestyle. Last year Walcott refused to sign a contract until they gave him 140k a week. The audacity for such an average player, who has done nothing for the club, and who has never broken into the starting eleven in over 10 years, to demand a superstar wage (only 10k less than Alexis and Ozil - making him the third highest paid player on their roster) paints pictures about Walcott and the club itself. Now if Walcott joins another club and starts to come into his own, it's merely a turn-around tragically delayed. Both him and the club are to be blamed for his lack of progression.

    He will never be the level. Everyone has surpassed him. First it was Bale, who went from lb at Southampton/spurs to RW for Real Madrid ... Then Ox who has been way more consistent in terms of ability Vs progression and now it's Dele Alli who has already more goals than him at 21. Fact is Walcott was never the standard and just got lucky, possibly because of his (at the time ridiculous pace). All young players who you'd consider raw right now are all far far superior to a now established Walcott such as Dele, Mbappe, Dembele, Assensio, Sane, Jesus and so on. Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain both left Southampton far too quickly. They should have stayed and got some experience of competitive football in the Championship (Walcott while on our way down; Ox when on our way back up) and moved on later for the kind of price that would require him to be a 1st XI mainstay. Young players also need to recognise that joining Arsenal will kill their development - the club doesn't have a clue how to properly nurture young talent, anymore.

That was probably the turning point for the disappointment of the last few seasons of not reaching his best. He's been unlucky on the International Stage too in terms of timings. WC 2006 Taken, but didn't play a minute. WC 2010 left out in favour of Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright Phillips? and this time hasn't had regular football and England have loads of options in Midfield anyway that he wouldn't expect to be on the plane.

    Like Chambo improving under Klopp, Walcott will become awesome under Big Sam with his pace and movement. Wenger is losing his golden touch. Players like Giroud, Sanchez, Ozil, Ramsey, Xhaka all shadows of what we know they can be, judging from how they play for other managers Only Wilshere is playing well, and that is only because he is a gunner through and through.

    • @lethargicpefectionist9890
      @lethargicpefectionist9890 Před 6 lety

      Sanchez improved a lot since coming here. The problem isn’t that wenger lost his touch in coaching, he bought very average players and neglected defending totally. I prefer him to leave but we need a good coach like klopp or conte, whom we clearly missed.

    Walcott isn't a problem, the problem is the British hype machine. 'Cause the second a young player that can kick a ball without falling over appears, suddenly the entire country puts absurd expectations on him and casually expect him to win a Ballon D'Or someday. In reality, the vast majority of players become average, even teenagers who do well early on in their career. Hell, just google lists of the prodigies being hyped up 5 years ago; heaps of "This is the next Messi/Ronaldo"
    Walcott is a success story, he's managed to be a Premier League footballer and remain at an upper echelon club like Arsenal for over a decade. Most players would kill for that.

      They only got into the team because they were fast. One trick ponies who never honed their skills in other areas and just rely on pace alone so it's easy for defenders to figure them out and pocket them. I think Walcott has been mismanaged because Wenger kept toying him with the idea of playing centre forward but then playing wide so he was just inbetween.
