Probably the craziest picking technique I've seen.
Bro I'm sitting here trying to figure out what's going on with that
That’s how the normal progression goes. You can only downstroke at first, then you learn to upstroke when you play chords, then comes alternate picking, maybe some finger-picking, and then you learn to alternate between your fingers on the pick like you’re some kind of Spanish god. Simple progression.
JB wrote a blurb in the tab book I bought that he grips with his middle finger.
It's like he down picks but hits the back of the pick. Then he switches to what I consider normal for triplets or fast chugs but then switches to his middle finger when doing fast alternate picking. It's so fuckin weird. I wouldn't think any guitar teacher would teach someone to ever play like that but he makes it work and fuckin rocks.

As a guitar tutor of 24 years, this has more detriment than benefits. There's a reason people like Misha from Periphery actually re-taught himself how to position his lock due to this. It's not a completely different terrible trait in practice, it's just if you're not doing it, don't bother at all. Pointless. @@andrewashford5617

This man mastered his craft well before 2010. And in 2024 im still shocked by that change in his picking technique and how quick and accurate it is second by second

Idk how they remember all the breakdown and palm muted patterns for all these songs.
It's called muscle memory ;)
I try to memorize how many beats the pattern runs before it loops, and pay more attention to where the rests are instead of the palm mutes. Album count is getting up there, I definitely could not memorize them all, but the classics are like riding a bike lol
They remember them because they wrote it. Not only that but when you play songs thousands of times it becomes second nature.
They have to re learn alot of their own songs, obviously comes easy but yea they couldn’t play every song they wrote currently
@@lastnameawesome8982 of course. But like you said it comes easy. Like riding a bike. I just had to relearn a set list from my old band because we've going to record the songs. Haven't played those songs in 8 years. As soon as I started playing, it all came back. In about 30 minutes I was able to play both guitar parts just as well as I used to back when we were still gigging.

Every time I watch these playthrough videos I can't get clear apprehension how is it possible to play like that, keep dozens of songs, reefs etc in the head and remember how exactly to play a particular song. This is just pure magic achieved by a very hard work, patience, passion and true love of what are you doing. I admire people like JB!

My friend Travis always tries to get me to listen to new bands. One day, he said you gotta here this band. It was this song he played through his phone. At the time, it sounded like shit (through the phone). So I went home and played it through my computer. I was completely blown away. Ever since then, I became a fan. And when ABR hits SoCal, we don't miss a show!!

A co worker of mine ended his life a few days ago. Just a terrible sad thing during this lockdown. I feel like I've been in a blurry state of existence until today. I went for a 14 mile run with a weighted vest on. "You've got your whole life to lead" gives me strength and courage to press forward. I've always used my pinki and ring for the very first notes in the first verse but now seeing this I started picking that way and it's definitely easier to do when standing.

Sometimes I come back to this video to watch the picking technique. Having just watched a Troy Grady video about something called reverse dart throwing picking motion has made this picking motion make a lot more sense and i think it explains some of the difficulty i've had trying to get some of the trickier triplets in between the fast string skipping. Either way though this video was super helpful in helping me get started on learning how to play electric guitar in general so thanks JB!
