  • This summer, I was an intern at the Connecticut Department of Transportation through the COMTO CITY Intern Program! I did some cool research with highway development, commuter culture, urban planning, crash data, and wetland mitigation! Thanks to @ctdotofficial and ‪@comtoheadquarters‬ for this opportunity!

      Taken from another comment: Majoring in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Earth Science, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or Graphic Design can help! Knowing how to use Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop can be helpful. It helps to be detail-oriented, tech savvy, a problem solver, and independent thinker. You can encounter errors in GIS and knowing how to troubleshoot them will make your life easier. Practicing getting use to the interface, and get familiar with ESRI products and web applications. In terms of looking for opportunities, public agencies (local, state, or federal government), private firms (architecture/engineering/construction, etc), or non-profit organizations can be a good start. Google, LinkedIn, Indeed, and Handshake are some good websites to find listings. Networking will be your friend though! Reach out to family members, friends, professors, or alumni of your institution who can help you find internships and can even be helpful in getting your resume into the hands of a recruiter

    Hi! I am going to apply to university soon and the faculty of geography in this university has a cartography program. I've heard that you can become a GIS Analyst through this program and I was wondering what exactly does it mean. I googled it and it looks interesting but I don't understand the depth of this job. If you could give me some more info, I would gladly appreciate!

    How can I learn and start my career as a GIS specialist?

    • @AdeAro
      @AdeAro  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Check if your school has access to ArcGIS or QGIS for students! You can even start by playing around with Google Earth Pro. Take classes in GIS, Remote Sensing, and Geography. Depending on the field/industry that you want to go into, try and do some self-directed research projects, or maybe email around and see if you can get someone to supervise your work or work on their project. I would recommend making maps, ArcGIS Story Maps, or videos to help build your portfolio so you have tangible things to show people. There are also PDFs with GIS exercises that you can work through

    • @AdeAro
      @AdeAro  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Look around on resources like LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Handskane! You'd also be in a good position to ask your advisor, professors, or school's career office to see if they have any contacts at any companies. Networking is key in terms of gaining contacts in the professional world and building your "personal brand" in your career. Also, talk to your friends and classmates to see what they've been applying to or what internships they've held in the past. Also, since you're graduating, some companies have rotational fellowship programs where college graduates spend 1-2 years rotating around different units, and then they choose one to work with full-time. Hope this helps!

      Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geology, Earth Science, etc. You can also get a certificate or degree in GIS too. Any field related to the natural or built environment helps with GIS! Also, data analytics or computer science degrees can help, as Python can be combined with GIS.
