- It's time for a new aquascaping tutorial! Today I'll walk you through the full setup process of my UNS 45U Iwagumi Aquarium. I'm setting this up as a dry start. Turned out super nice. I almost felt a little embarrassed about all the praise 😅 as for fish blue neon tetra would be a classic NA choice. Black neon or similar silver colored fish

Looks so good, thanks for documenting the process. Looking forward to my 45p Iwagumi soon. I’m planning to add green or black neon tetras. I think they could look great in yours as well. Subtle but maybe with some yellow or orange shrimp 👍

Nice Iwagumi Logan. I would add some red cherry barbs. They will give some nice contrast.
They’re really beautiful but perhaps a little large for a 45cm tank

Neon - cardinal would look good. But in my opinion their flashy color may take the attention away from scape to fishes .

After moving stuff around over the weekend I’m left with an empty 40g breeder and a 2 1/2 gallon bucket of dwarf sag. I’m thinking I might be heading for an Iwagumi style tank here with some dragon stone.

Wonder what dimensions the mother stone has for this build considering the tank size.. Looks awesome!
I haven’t measured but it’s about 2/3 the height of the tank if it was directly on the bottom glass

I added too much aquasoil at the front/foreground area and now have too thick of layer of substrate in my UNS5N underneath my HC Cuba carpet. The tank is now well established. Is there any advice you have to remove the substrate in the front and possibly add it to the back without causing too much debris getting into the water column?
I would carefully siphon out the excess soil from the front using some 1/2 inch vinyl tubing. You’ll have to peel back some of the Cuba to do it
Just got a 60p that I am looking forward to scaping my first attempt at an Iwagumi style. Did you consider a dark start? This may be a dumb question but could you do a "dry start" after doing a "dark start" thereby eliminating most of the ammonia from the aqua soil during the 'dark start' and then allow the plants to establish during the 'dry start'? Thanks for the inspiration. By the way, you have a very good presentation style, you must have a career in media (other than CZcams).
id say just go dry start dark start only worth for cycling and all bacteria will die in dry start
Dark start is a combo of leaching the ammonia while simultaneously building up your beneficial bacteria so doing the dark start than drying things out would be counter intuitive to the bacteria part. In theory this could be done if you could run the filter on another algae-free mature tank while the tank dry starts but it seems a little silly
What kind of floating plants would you suggest for a tank without co2?
Pretty much any floater will work as they can get CO2 atmospherically
Which twinstar light is that and do you have it at full intensity or dimmed a bit?
Check the description for all equipment. This one is dimmed at 70%

There is a lack of iwagumi scape in CZcamsz
Looks nice but you may have broken a few rules.. like the Oyaishi stone must be 2/3 the height of the space. Your rock is too big according to the rules.. however I think it looks amazing and throw the rules out the window.. Also I counted 20 stones and it must be either 21 or 19. No even numbers! Just kidding!
Thanks for bringing those rules to my attention! While I sometimes go more by feeling than theory, I'm really big on knowing the theory even when choosing to break rules. I'll keep that 2/3rd rule in mind next time I'm hardscaping to see if it impacts my composition. Thanks for watching!
