No Melon, “it is what it is” is not a valid defense in the court of law, especially in cases of first degree murder.
FACT CHECK: Anthony H. Fantano did not make this claim. Rating: False.
*When asked what his fruity pebbles tasted like, the Melon did indeed plead the fifth*

Let’s argue: the mixing on Thundercats records are a purposeful aesthetic decision made by him and Flying Lotus to add character to the recordings.
I thought he was full of shit until I listened to interstellar love again. The drums actually do sound really messy.
It’s the same as all the little videos for the album, it’s a lofi aesthetic, even the “clipping” sound I think is deliberate and I think it sounds cool af
I agree. I also feel like it's a hallmark of Brainfeeder overall at this point (although there's a lot of their stuff I haven't heard)
Cosmogramma and You're Dead! clip all over the place, it's just Flying Lotus's thing. I suppose you either like it or you don't.

Anthony, you can’t give Thundercat a 6 just cause he’s covered in cat hair.
Yeah, at least he still smells good!
He also looks good in his dragonball durag
He certainly has tied it right.
He gave it a 6 bc he thinks the Thunderbirds theme song has nice rattling hi hats and more of a gnarly kick to it
Yet he still smells good!!

I kind of think the muddyness of his records has just become a charming part of his music's aesthetic to me.
I honestly think "Drunk" could be the title to all his records due to their muddyness, and sometimes stream of conscious lyrical themes, as well as base lines. He also goes back forth very frequently between tones of sillyness and moodyness.
melon, giving thundercat a 0/10 and saying “it is what it is” without an actual explanation doesn’t count as a review!

I don't understand how someone like Fantano, who listened and reviewed hundreds of records, doesn't get that the sound design of an album doesn't have to be ultra polished to be good. I don't understand how he doesn't see that the sound mastering is what it is on purpose, it's beyond me and I'm mad.
Ya, it's kind of infuriating.
Regardless of whether the muddy mixing is just a purposeful aesthetic, it's still his opinion that it just makes the music sound worse. I'm inclined to agree with him. The mixing just sounds like it would be far better if it was taken in a different direction.
@@kobealegendforever1310 well the mixing is a big part of the success of thundercat, it wouldn't be thundercat without that, as you said it's part of his aesthetic and if it was the same album with a different sound mix I'm pretty sure no one would care as much about his work

The production here is fantastic. Certainly not on every track but through the majority. So much emotion on this album, amazing project. 9/10 IMO
Johnson TLK I think the mixing is what bothers him, it sounds kind of muddy like all the sounds are under water kinda
I’m still getting into the vibes. It’s definitely one of those albums that I can tell will take time to grow on me. I did love Black Qualls a lot, that had me really looking forward to this project.
Yh I love this album, one of my favourites of the yr so far- but do have to agree mixing could have been better and some songs could have been extended and let breathe a little. Much prefer it to drunk though, which was a cool vibey experience but didn’t feel much more than that to me, whereas a lot of these tracks are either obviously hilarious or have quite a bit of emotional potency.
It’s giga drunk
I love this album but I do agree with him that it's a bit muddy at times
anthony you cant just give thundercat a 6/10 because he’s “mixed” :/

When people don't hear trebled-out sparkly clean mixes they automatically think it's bad. I love the warmth of this record, FlyLo and Daddy Kev don't fuck around!
I don't get it, Anthony defended IGOR because 'it's supposed to sound like that' but he somehow thinks the mix on this and Kaytranada's newest album is unintentional? With artists like these the mix is such a huge deal, they don't do anything by accident.

I really liked this project. Love how one part of the album is all happy and fun(ky) and the other half transitions to this more sad and broken hearted part of Thundercat. Also when I found out about the context behind the last part of the the title song(being that he and lotus recorded it right after hearing the news of macs passing) it made that part so much more emotional, especially when Thundercat says ''hey mac''. Honestly wish that fantano focused more one the subject of the album but hey, I guess it is what it is.

I really loved this album and Donald's feature on Black Qualls is fantastic!!! The whole song sounds like it was striaght off a Parliament record.
I understand your gripes with the mixing I just don't care because the songs at the end of it all are still a pretty great songs.
I haven't checked out much of his previous stuff yet, but I assumed the muddy mixing was ti hearken back to older funk albums like Sly Stone.
@@thirtyyearoldmulberryfield You would be partially correct, but I'd argue the mix on those older records were still clearer and richer in some instances. It's kind of hard to measure as there are plenty of great lofi mixes as there are bad ones. Like the mix on Blu's Good to be Home when compared to something like Some Rap Songs, or even IGOR.

He does mention it himself toward s the end of the review but I’m damn sure the mixing is as it’s intended to be. It’s kinda like saying “there was too much bass for my taste. Every song has lots of bass in it. This next track also has too much bass. Despite all the bass it’s still a good album. But could use less bass. 6/10”
At this point I don't think melon understands what a good mix sounds like.
c'mon man, you can't say this album is well mixed. Everything just doesn't sound as clear and good as it could have been except for some tracks. It's obviously lacking in quality in that section.
@@nishot2639 nah, I think you're conflating crystal clarity with "good mixing" too much. I think the mix has a fantastic warm, radiant quality that just feels so good on my ears.
A "good mix" is very subjective after all

**ridiculous ty$ vocal trill thats way too long, way too extra, and also way too good at the same time**
The best concert of my life seeing him, he just straight up 70% improvised, a true jazz legend. Love all of his albums (1 of my fav artists of all time actually) and believe he should have had grammy nominations for drunk because it’s just more pop-like and somehow bright/stellar. As for myself I cannot decide since forever which album of his is my favorite one. But this record (although there are also bangers on with sweet melodies) is mixed weird af. Like hearing music from far… frustrating to listen to sadly
There was an incredible amount of emotion packed into this album. The instrumentation was ambitious and gave a lot of the tracks great colour. There were definitely as few parts that were hurt by the producing, but as a whole, I didn't find it as bad as you did. The balance between raw emotion and moments of humour really helped the album in my eyes. 7/10
Quick question: what do you listen to music on and how many times do you listen before you review?
Definitely not poor mixing on this album... This is not what poor mixing sounds like. Listened to this album countless times on multiple headphones over the week and I love the aesthetic of some of the tracks. Some crunchy low ends which the mix compliments on a few tracks - I guess you could call them "muddy" but it's clearly a choice and not poor mixing.
The way I see mixing now is that unless you want a boiled down, sterile pop record that gets rid off every unnecessary frequency, then you need to appreciate each sound and its position in the mix intentional or not as an artistic stroke. Hearing and finding these strokes is part of appreciating the art for me, the same way you'd examine a painting in an art gallery
Imma have to disagree with your take on the production man. I feel that he was goin for a more old school sound to wear you can hear the bass and sax over the drums. More of like a 70’s/Marvin Gaye sound. Just my opinion tho
OH COME ON ANTHONY
Melon you know DAMN WELL the ending to “Overseas” is fucking HILARIOUS
What kinds of mix do you like then? Seems like every review you do you say "Oh this mix was terrible!" What mix is good then? I'd really like to know.
The album is probably not epic, as Drunk has been became.
However, Thundercat is one of the few dudes out there, who knows exactly what he is doing. Moreover, he also does exactly what he wants to do, to say that, he is not really concerned about representing any fashion, tradition or convention. Being a humorous-bordless-free-weirdo-virtuoso cat, his playing, sound, production, humor, aesthetics mood palette make his work very unique. So, whatever the convention for music production is at the moment, every choice in that album is certainly a concious one.
A genius does not make mistakes because his choices are free of judgement. A clipping hi-hat can be right, if one realises that, distortion is just a way of colouring sound.
Even when you can speak very well, it does not mean you will speak the truth.
Now, I wonder if those 6000 likes are in favor Anthony's fallacy or they actually agree that the album is just ''not good enough''.
as Drunk *has become
(I disagree with you. It sounds muddy, esp the bass. Like he's trying to hide the bass. As I was listening to it, I thought to myself several times, This sounds kinda lousy. That is a distraction from the music. YES, a conscious choice. But a choice that I don't agree with. I have the right to an opinion about something, and I am not going to pay someone for a product I deem inferior. I will excuse mistakes that are unintentional. However, making decisions results in consequences. The direct consequence of Thundercats decisions as far as production goes, is that I dislike the album.
It could be a fuck of a lot better. Songwriting issues as well. As in, moments of wonder and funky goodness sandwiched in between lazy shit. I think melon's review was fine.
Just because you bitch on youtube comments, doesn't mean anyone gives a flying fuck about what you think. I wholeheartedly believe that all those likes are supporting Anthonys assertion that the album is just a little bit above average, or 6/10, or NOT GOOD ENOUGH to get a 7.)

IT EEEEEEZZ WHAT IT EEEEEEZZ
i love every track on this album, ive taken a deep dive into thundercat and this seems like.. not a broken hearted but a open hearted expression of loss(mac miller) and his conflict with fame and conflicts with love or just being yourself. if you look at a picture of him in 2016-17 he was living a different life style until mac died, now in 2020 you can see how hes risen to such a height only to loose one of the best parts o being there, i like to think the epilogue kind of expresses that with doing the best you can and its not good enough(because you dont have that missing thing), i love the idea of it is what it is being connecting idea through the album weither by lyrical means or by that personalized thundercat sound, but in a way it could be seen as, "what was, was" idk call me a diehard fan but as far as im concerned, between him and esperenza spaulding, they are the leading edge of what it means to express yourself through an instrument that is typically underrated.
maybe we shouldnt tell him flying lotus produced the entire thing

What microphone do you use for these reviews?
Melon, you can’t create a Thundercat voodoo doll and torture it repeatedly because “it is what it is”
How could you not love Innerstellar Love, that track is amaaaaaaazing 🚀🚀🚀
Y’know, the production on the last album kept me from enjoying it to the fullest, but this one’s doesn’t in the slightest. Every instrument is easy to pick out on just about every song, the bass is always present & clear, the digital drums & synths are blended warmly & with a lot of body, & Thundercat’s vocals are pretty damn on-pitch. Couple that with a batch of catchier, more straightforward & hook-heavy tracks, & you’ve got a predecessor that improves upon the previous release in nearly every way.
I’m not gonna meme it up or joke about you not changing my taste, I’m just gonna have to disagree majorly. No offense Melon, it is what it is.
Why you didn't mention the Pedro Martins feature while talking about the progression on the song? That kind of progression is literally his signature lmao
I don't listen to a lot of the music covered here but I like tuning in every day to see what the melon is throwin. Your daily grind is seen and enjoyed fantano! I hope you have time for yourself between reviews. Lots of love!
Review summary: Melon doesn't know how to tie a durag, meaning he can't get waves. As a result, the album got a 6.
I agree with what he's saying about a lot of the tracks seeming muddled, specifically, funny thing could have been better if it was more punchy and distinct, however I disagree with some of your points about the production about the reverb on the vocals being a mask for Thundercat's voice. I think that the heavy reverb is entirely on purpose, and that if he were to cool it with adding a bunch of electronic bits into every song, the bass, vocals, and percussion would come together better.
