My Dad passed away in 1991 at 82 years young. I'm 71 now already. And I still remember him raving to me many times reminiscing about how much he loved dancing to Duke Ellington, the Dorsey Brothers, Count Basie, and especially Cab Calloway at the original Palais Royale in Toronto, Canada in the 1930s before he got married.. Great stuff.

And I love Cab! I remember I saw him for the first time when I was a kid in the movie "Blues Brothers". I had no idea who he was, and I remember I thought: "Wow, this old man has a great voice and dances like a young one! What an incredible energy! "
Lol. I'm envying my great-grandparents for having lived these years of beautiful music! I'd like to live in America just for it! Thanks for having shared your story, sir!

Plenty of people had that inspiration. Music evolves from other music. He definitely wasnt an inventor of rock and roll. It was a variety of things, no single person. R&B singers. Boogie woogie pianists, blues guitarists, ragtime pianists and orchestras, etc all led to the creation of rock and roll and doo wop in the 1950s. And it was not one sole color of person either. It was everybody. That's what is beautiful about music

So agree with you.. this was us at our greatest.
We made fantastic music back then we were so talented.
I have no idea what happened today.
      I mean, we created jazz.
And I have absolutely no idea what happened to us..
I do know that white people are more interested in this particular kind of black American music then the younger black generation today..
I mean, if you go on CZcams and look at Lindy Hop competitions,
All you'll see are white people.
      And I'm talking about internationally.
      France, sweden, finland, the uk,
all over the place. They're doing all of these great black American classic jazz dances,
Meanwhile, young black people. We don't care, it's very sad.

5:56 - I recently bought myself a suit like that; an original 1930s, complete with Rolled brim jazz fedora hat. Sometimes I'll go out to a nice part of London, wearing it. Yes, people steer as if I'm odd, but I really don't care. I love the fashion of that era. I might go to Ronnie Scott's in it.

Although the film bills itself as taking place in the Cotton Club, the streets of Harlem and an apartment up in Sugar Hill, everything was most likely shot on a soundstage in New York and all the people you see are extras, hired to play white hoi poloi "slummin" uptown or the black girlfriends and fans of the musicians. No one did anything without a cue from the director because they didn't want anything to happen that might take the audience's attention from the man attraction: Cab Calloway and his swinging orchestra. So, everybody just sat still, stood still, smiled and watched.
