  • Sorrel is a perennial plant that grows easily in a kitchen garden and has many applications. It can be used as a herb, a leafy green to spice up a salad, or the main focus of a tasty cold soup, just perfect for a hot, summer day.
    Former chef, culinary educator, and food activist, Michele Knaus, demonstrates how to make a homemade Sorrel Soup from sorrel gathered from her own backyard garden.

    we grew Sorrel in our garden. I had never tasted it before. This turned out to be one of the best soups I've ever tasted in my life! Thanks so much! Whole family loved it! My wife asked if I used lemon in it. I laughed and told her no.

    Have you ever seen sorrel and wonder what to do with it? How about soup? The sorrel soup can be served hot or cold and goes well with some crusty bread and good cheese. Michele shows you how in this video.

    This year I grew a bunch of sorrel for salads, used to forage it a lot as a kid and love the taste. This recipe looks really tasty so I'll have to try it out, will need to substitute the potatoes though for Cauliflower or Turnips maybe.

    Thank you for uploading this film. I planted sorrel and tasted it for the first time last Summer. I am hopeful to divide the plant this coming Spring as I really do appreciate the flavour of this delightful herb. Unfortunately I have been suffering from sleep disturbance recently, have found myself unable to sleep at night, instead sleeping during the day so limiting the time I can spend on one of my favourite activities - gardening. I would be deeply, deeply touched to anyone reading this comment if they would include me in their thoughts and prayers as I attempt to rectify this most horrendous and debilitating of conditions. Thank you.

      Hope you're able to sleep at night by now, .... and if not one of my fav solutions to overcome insomnia is to fill a fine mesh bag or sachet with dried lavender and place just under or around your pillow, the fragrance will make you sleep like a baby. After a time you'll need to refresh and activate your lavender by squishing the sachet around in the palm of your hand. Pleasant dreams :)

      Michael Ball, my heart goes out to you. I also suffer from insomnia and have for many years.
      Sleep deprivation is so harmful and in my case it increases the pain levels as I have chronic and debilitating arthritis and fibromyalgia.
      There is an over the counter product called ARTERIL. My sleep specialist recommended to me. It is the only product that contains L-Tryptophan, Glycine and Melatonin plus many herbs like Valerian, Chamomile, Hops and Passionflower. It comes in tablet form and is very safe.
      I will keep you in my prayers and hope you will be able to improve your sleep!

    Hi, my sorrel is the red stem sorrel and a bit bigger from 2019 transplant. Had to cut it off and it grew again. I would like to use it to make soup this week or very soon. Could I follow this recipe for my "a bit tougher" leaves? Thank you very much. Stay healthy and happy.

    Very nice young lady. Would adding lemon basil to the soup, boost up the favor?

    • @foodfarmerearth
      @foodfarmerearth  Před 10 lety +2

      You could, but basil is pretty distinct and I believe it would make it a different flavor from what Michele was going for. If you'd like a more lemony profile, try adding a little lemon juice. The recipe Michele provided originally called for lemon, but she felt what she made (on camera) had just the right amount so decided not to add any.

      @@foodfarmerearth I saw one recipe (a little different) where someone who made if often, called for a pinch of cayenne pepper to "slightly" spice it up...might that work with this one ? That was in response to a James Beard chef, but his will egg addition liaison will break and I need something I can hold over for an Ofc Thanksgiving Party I am making it for. I grow several dozen different unique greens ( I also like lemon basil !) and sorrel is probably my favorite !! :)

    I live in an area on the west coast of Washington state and we have hundreds of deer eating all of our landscaping. I'm not exaggerating. Do you know if they eat sorrel? If it's an herb they might not.
