  • Train horns! is a video series that listens to different types of air horns used on North American locomotives at railroad crossings.
    Part 3 features the Nathan Airchime K5LLA, which is incredibly loud. The standard K5LLA uses the 1L, 1, 2, 3A and 4A bells and is the horn of choice on new EMD locomotives, such as the SD70M-2 and SD70ACe, while the K5HL is for GE's, becoming one of the most common train horns in the country.
    Heritage Units are exluded from this video as all 20 are featured in there own video here: • Norfolk Southern's 20 ...

    11:00 - NS 9672 K5LLA - 11/17/18
    Since 2004, like any other horn, some have appeared on other locomotives models; we'll see several examples in this video. Some modified versions of this horn exist, particularly on the MEC 3400's or GO Transit, often referred to as K5LL or K5LLB depending on the bell utilization.
    The K5LLA, along with the K5HL, use a 1L bell that came onto the market in 2004 as a response to a federal mandate that established a minimum and maximum decibel rating, which ultimately led railroads, most notably CSX, to rid older horns off of their locomotives, particularly Leslie 3 and 5 chime horns. In reality, the K5LLA and K5HL are often much louder than the Leslie horns. Sound-dampening techniques include turning several bells or the entire horn backwards. In any case, the most typical K5LLA arrangement involves turning only the 1L bell backwards.

      Some of the heritage units have really throaty, deep K5LLA's, you usually know when the CNJ or PC are coming because they are definitely among some of the deepest horns.

      According to Nathan Airchime, “generations” aren’t a thing. Officially, they are known as “Raised Letter K5LLAs” because of the font on the back caps of the horn.

    • @hakeemsd70m
      @hakeemsd70m Před 5 lety +3

      Nathan Airchime horns don't have generations. The older models are can be referred to as an Airchime K5LLA, or identified by their manufacturer tag, like "Round Tag" K5LLA. The sharper sounding horns are known as "Raised Letter" (due to the literal raised letters on the backcaps of the horn) or "Micro Precision" K5LLA.

    Just a note, at 5:02, that is not a K5LLB. A K5LLB would typically have the 1L, 1, 2, 3B and 4 bells. It has to have a 3B to be classified as an LLB. K5LLBs are exactly the same as K5HLBs just on a low manifold

    Pan Am Railways went with the K5LLB on their 3400 series SD40-2’s mainly because only one bell (either the 1L or the 1 bell) is facing forward while the 1, 2, 3, and 5 bells are facing backwards to reduce the noise to meet regulations.
    If their configuration was that of an ACe with 3 bells facing forward and 2 facing backwards then they would sound a lot more like SD70ACe’s as a result.

      US&CA Railfan 2103 The Leslie RS5T May be the king of train horns due to its history but the Nathan K5LLA was designed to be louder.

    Since NS is storing all the SD70M-2's they should put the K5LLA's on those on the SD70ACes because the M-2's have the original K5LLA horns whilist the ACes seem to have a newer one that in my opinion doesn't sound quite as pleasing. 2734 and 2667 are the best ones in this whole video.
