The Joker also knows how to read body language. He called out the squealer for hiding behind a TV screen rather than meeting in person.
It was an empty statement; EVERYONE is a squealer when facing the Batman. Even Maroni squealed when Batman threw him from a one story fire escape.

In the context of the movie, the Joker getting offended by being called a "freak" and "crazy" actually makes sense - his entire motivation is to prove that anyone, anyone at all could end up as twisted as he is. It's the point of the two boats scene as well as the reason he tries to corrupt Harvey Dent. This scene acts, among other things, as an early hint to his true motive.
"You are the 'other,' you aren't normal."
"I am not the 'other,' I am the inevitable."
Just like the joker in the joker movie, truly one of the best representations of the joker.

The dismissiveness of it is most grating. If you’ve ever heard someone say “aw, he’s just a nut”, it amounts to:
“I see you, I cannot understand your motivations nor empathize with your human condition, I shall now disregard your existence”. Almost nothing feels shittier than being dismissed.
“As you can see the scene was filmed on a camera, not only does this show evidence of this taking place but it shows that we all got to really enjoy this part in the film.”
If you pay close attention, having the ring with the strings attached to the grenades shows he's very willing to blow things out of proportion, and to show how dangerous and serious he is.

•The Joker in this scene, and many scenes where he is talking to authority figures like mob bosses and cops is basically reading from a script he has memorized to help himself maintain the illusion of control that is vital to achieving his goal. This is almost nonexistent in conversations with Rachel and Batman where his communication seems more natural and appeals to them directly in the moment. Despite his position of confidence, he seems to genuinely be concerned that this interaction with the mob bosses will not be well received…and he knows that his plans hinge on at least some of them reacting to him as intended. He also doesn’t seem to be appealing to anyone else besides Maroni and the Chechen mob boss who is close to him.
•When Gambol initially challenges the Joker he (Gambol) has a mostly relaxed jaw with mild tensing around his eyes and brow, indicating skepticism. After performing the pencil trick, the Joker’s eyes follow the victim below the table as if to be certain he’s dead, then rise toward Maroni’s side of the table as he looks out of the corner of his eyes with a smile reflexively creeping up-this indicates his satisfaction yet mild surprise in front of a person he means to impress. It’s worth noting that he is making eye contact with Maroni while addressing his previous comment about the cheapness of the Joker’s suit, as if Gambol and his dead goon are irrelevant to his goal (because they are).
•Gambol shows clenched teeth and glares from under his brow when saying “freak”, indicating genuine hostility and anger after the death of his henchmen, in contrast with previously being merely irritated.
•The word “freak” genuinely breaks the Joker’s concentration, momentarily, and prompts a deviation from his internal script as he retreads his last few words to find his place, internally. Despite this conversation not being meant for Gambol, Joker picks back up with his script (omitting the part that references himself, as it now feels to vulnerable) and reflexively indicates repressed rage towards Gambol by narrowing his glare at him while sucking his own clenched teeth and “clicking” as a way of preempting his impulse to break his cadence further. All the while, Joker is redirecting his rehearsed speech towards Maroni and his eyes eventually catch up to his audience. Only after redirecting, does he regain all of his composure by referring to Gambol’s grandmother without actually making eye contact with Gambol again.
•Despite being caught off guard by Gambol’s interruption, Joker anticipated being called “crazy” and was ready to emphasize that he wasn’t, while his rehearsed confidence in this assertion did not completely mask a degree of sensitivity to the accusation of being crazy (which seems routed most immediately in not being taken seriously, whether or not he believes his sanity is in question).
•(My personal favorite moment) “You think you can steal from us and walk away?” “Yeah.” This is literally the most sincere moment from the Joker in this scene. He wasn’t expecting such a direct but obvious question, which is after he has made his very planned and deliberate appeal to Maroni and thus has no further rehearsed conversation to recite, and the question passes through the most rudimentary filter of how he should respond that he quickly determines that an honest (but short) answer is acceptable. So…”yeah”.
This was a better breakdown of the scene then the actual video. Addressing the micro-expression of the clicking, it was a nervous tick and is one moment we see the jokers countenance fall. His soft laugh when he says "your little *gulp* group therapy session in *laugh* broad daylight" indicates a level of humor with the degree he saw them as pathetic and weak. I always liked the Chechnian Mob Boss but am just starting to notice how cool of a character he was. He never once flinched out of fear in this scene cause he thought he understood him. but only after realizing that he and the joker weren't the same (after burning all the money) he then realized that the joker was not at all what he thought and then became afraid of him and became angry when he said he was taking over.

I think most people pick up in the more subtle body cues but not consciously.
I have a friend like this. It's weird, she knows you and all of your weaknesses once she catches onto your personality, but it isn't a bad thing at all. It would depend on who's hands it's in, but she's really nice about it unless she wants to make fun of you.

One thing I love about this version of the Joker, is that despite appearing to be completely “out of control,” he’s actually far more in control of his thoughts, actions and emotions than anyone else, even Batman himself. Everything he does is planned out and done for a reason, and is always part of a larger plan.
For example, many think the bank robbery at the beginning was just to get the money, and possibly to show the mob he wasn’t afraid of them or just because he was too crazy to care. But if you look at it as part of a grand scheme, it’s actually a brilliant move as with this single act he’s not only put the mob bosses on notice that they don’t scare him, but made a name for himself in the crime bosses of Gotham. This is what allows him to arrive at their secret meeting, and have at least some of the bosses will view him as an equal, be worthy of being heard out and taken seriously, but that wouldn’t have been the case without the robbery of the mob bank.
We see how well thought out Jokers plans are repeatedly through the film, and that from the beginning he’s playing a well thought out game of chess. The police, and Batman, were simply reacting to each of the Joker’s moves, so it was easy for the Joker to know ahead of time how they would react to each of his actions.
Heath’s Joker was an amazing antagonist, made all the more impressive by how lacking most movie villains have been, especially in superhero movies. IMO Joker even tops Thanos as a supervillain, simply because he wasn’t a super powered bad guy that was able to accumulate power and a bunch of magical stones, but because he used his wit and intelligence to achieve his goals, which not only grounds the film in reality, but also makes having compelling villains in future films much easier, not that many films have successfully capitalized on this.
What I mean is, after Joker, it shouldn’t be hard to make other great and powerful villains, but after battling Thanos, and his ability to shape time, space and reality to suit his desires, where o you go from there, while still making the villain seem like a credible threat, not only to earth, but the universe and reality as a whole? Basically it seems Marvel studios have written themselves into a corner such that only giant super powered “magical” beings could be seem as a realistic threat.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved most of the first four phases of the Marvel cinematic universe, I just think anything that follows will have a tough time measuring up. This is even the case with superheroes, I mean Thor damn near broke the spectrum of super power abilities, but then they trot out Captain Marvel, and decide that since it’s going to be a woman her power needs to be second to none. So basically they not only wrote themselves into the Superman box, but actually jumped the shark in that where do you go from there? Once you have characters that can fly through space, are invulnerable, have super strength, can fire energy blasts, etc…, who do you introduce next? I think that was part of the reason Antman got such a Luke warm reception, as by the time he was introduced we already had Capt America, Iron Man, Hulk, Falcon and Thor, so he was basically just another guy in a suit which gave him some unique ability, been there, done that.
Speaking of Iron Man, why does he make countless suits for himself, several different versions of War Machine, several suits for Spider-Man and even suits for Pepper, but nothing for Hawkeye, Black Widow, Falcon (although I assume Tony upgraded Falcon’s flight suit to include weaponry,) or any other elite agents within Shield? Hell, even some of the Avengers with superpowers could benefit from a customized iron man type suit, Captain America, Bucky and Scarlet Witch are the first few to come to mind. After all, despite having super powers, they aren’t bulletproof and could benefit from other advantages the suits would provide.
Sorry, wall of text completed. I’m going to blame my pain, from multiple spine surgeries, as well as my pain meds and being homebound, since long before this current lockdown BS started, for my rambling off in this post. 🤪
I love when the Joker shows he's rigged with grenades, the Russian mobster kinda scoffs away like he's annoyed with the others for pushing him into it. Always thought that was a funny reaction to someone threatening to blow everyone up.

The actors are doing a kind of work called acting, where they use subtle gestures and facial expressions to porttray the attitudes and emotions of the characters in the scene.

I feel like the quick point and glare the Joker throws at Gamble at 5:13 after he announces he is gonna put a hit on him is a "so you have chosen death" and a 'Joker will remember that' type gesture. And knowing how brilliantly cunning the Joker is he uses that very hit put on him to eventually fool and kill Gamble later on. Even stating "how bout alive?" before jumping from the body bag showing he remembered what Gamble said, which makes me feel he took the insults and threats from Gamble very personally.
Do one where you analyze your own body language!

I love how the focus of the video was actually on the scene and less on you. I feel like most videos would've had the focus on the analyst and had the movie's scene play in a small corner. I really enjoyed being able to watch the scene for myself before having someone explain what was going on in a quick and simple manner to avoid interrupting the scene's tension!

This entire scene has to be one of the best in the past 20 years, maybe ever. Sets the tone for each side that the rest of the movie follows while being semi vague about it. The facial expressions and emphasis on certain words & syllables really drives the point home.
I like this scene overall in the movie. the three main mob heads gathered for a meeting (Russian, Italian, & Black Gangster) the Russian & Italian bosses not only show lack of fear towards Joker, but also show that he's gaining their respect.
That "yeah" gets me everytime 😂

I love the differences between Chechen, Maroni, and Gambol. Chechen was interested - he definitely genuinely liked the idea of working with the Joker, but I don’t know if he took him as a serious threat (he barely stirred when the grenades were revealed, and honestly looked only vaguely annoyed in the second he glanced away). Maroni seemed cautiously intrigued, trying to work out the details of who this enigmatic character was. He wanted to understand his business partner before he made him a business partner. And when the grenades came out, there was a conflict between his shock and fear and of his need to remain composed. He didn’t stand to get away from the threat, but his jaw dropped, and he stirred in his seat as he became noticeably uncomfortable. And then there was Gambol, who didn’t release his tension or lower his aggression ONCE. The entire time, his anger (and fear) of the Joker was palpable - he felt threatened. His authority, his power, and his hold over anyone in the room. For all his goons and bodyguards, he knew from The Pencil that this was a person he really couldn’t touch. The whole scene felt like an undercut - Lau took power away from every mobster in the room only because he literally couldn’t be touched. And then the Joker walked in and ripped the rug out from EVERYONE’S feet. He didn’t have to tell them he was in charge now, but they all knew he was.
I also loved that joker snuck in a yo momma/grandma joke in on Gamble at the end lmao

I love how joker does everything without a plan. And the classic pencil disappearance is a great touch
I love that you pointed out the character of The Chechen and how he was reacting. It's one of my favorite bits of this scene. He seems completely relaxed from the moment he walks in, then when he shakes hands with Maroni it seems like Maroni really respects him. Then, from the moment Joker walks in, The Chechen is the only one to keep a relaxed body posture pretty much the whole time. He doesn't even respond much when Joker reveals the grenades. Anyway, appreciate the analysis of one of my favorite scenes in any film I've ever watched!

From secondhand experience, that is an absolutely genuine reaction from that mob guy. Like they say, real recognizes real.
I watched a psychologist breakdown of the Joker that was really interesting. He said he's not a psychopath, because he doesn't have his own self-preservation as his number one goal. He instead suggested that, like Batman, he is suffering from PTSD. He hates order and structure and does everything in his power to create chaos. He suggested that the Joker may be a military vet that is scarred from combat. Makes a lot of sense since he is proficient with firearms, has clear hand to hand combat skills, and can avoid detection from the police even dressed the way he does. Maybe he saw the structure collapse while deployed and saw the true carnage that is the world and now he's hell bent on showing everyone what people are really like without their little schemes? Fun to think about.
I ALSO love how Joker says if you wanna take things a little more 'seriously', here's my card.. and it's a joker card from a random deck of cards lol

The way the Joker walks in, the way everyone is sitting around, and when that henchman falls to the ground is a clear indication that they are operating under the influence of gravity.

Easily one of my favorite moments. Not a single beat is missed from Joker, and the delivery almost sounds like "are you fucking serious? I managed to walk in here without alerting security, and now have you all by the balls. Of COURSE I can."

The director is the source of the instructions, the actor personifies what the director envisioned
the Joker finger point at 5:13 and his expression is fantastic - the mob guy just played his hand and Joker immediately thinks "ooo i've got an idea" which he implements later infiltrating the mob guys place with his companions. He's so far ahead of the curve in the whole field and this moment is fantastic
ooo - do one for Bourne identity films too - Damon's acting in that is awesome and so subtle in many places.
This movie is literally so good. I'm an avid reader of dc comics and I love batman the animated series. It's such perfect rendition of a live action movie of it's animated, graphic novel, and comic partners.
The last scene he just says: “here you can see the actors are really good at knowing What their characters are thinking” and then just ends the video without explaining it further😂

you forgot about the moment Lao turns off the TV after the Joker labels him as a squealer.
Shows he partially believes the statement made by the Joker and he doesn't the mobs to investigate that idea further.
Notice how the joker pauses and winks when the black guy calls him a freak because he don't want to say "you momma a freak!"

Joker : DO I LOOK LIKE A GUY WITH A PLAN ?
I love the "Magic Trick," because it's a misdirection. The gangster tries to threaten him, and rather than respond to the threat, Joker Deflects. He doesn't try to bring up his Points yet, he puts on a show, because that's what The Joker is: A performance. "Why so serious?" Because The Joker is serious, as a heart attack, the whole time. This is why his "Jokes" fall flat, it's in the delivery. It puts the audience at inease, it throws them off, but the Joker doesn't create chaos because he loves Chaos. He's creating the land of the Blind, to be the only 1 eyed man.
The few lines between Batman and Joker sum the two. "You have nothing on me" "You have to break your only rule (to shoot/kill). Despite being called crazy and freak slightly bother him. Did Joker has a weakness?
