- The IEC has lodged an appeal with the Constitutional Court over the electoral court's ruling which allowed former president Jacob Zuma to contest the 29 May elections. Earlier this week, the electoral court set aside the commission's decision to disqualify Zuma from taking part in the upcoming polls.
Executive Chairperson of the Institute of Election Management Services in Africa, Terry Tselane weighs in.

They have interest. They are not being independent.
Clearly the IEC is being pressured and has descended into the political arena. What are their grounds of appeal because the reasons for the ruling are not yet issued?

This is the right thing in this case. If the Con Court rules in favor of Zuma, there won't be any room for criticism since the electoral court ruling is unprecedented, looking at what the law previously said on prosecuted candidates.
The last ruling was the Winnie Mandela case, and VF lost that case as well.
Ramaphosa made Zuma sentence short to three months, while a person cannot contest if he has been sentenced to more than 12 months.
So what should happen with IEC or they should be treated as political party.

Tselane its simple here .A contempt of court judgement is not a reasoned judgement because there was audi alterem rule that is hear other side. There was no cross examination so you can't dis enfranchise some one on its strength. Its established rule that the conviction must involve violence or dishonesty which is all missing here
