On April 4, 2002, a controversial event would occur that changed the life of former alice in chains bassist Mike Starr forever. He would visit his best friends apartment condo in Seattle Washington, and what was thought to be a seemless time ended up being an argument that would haunt Mike up until the years of his death.

The day Layne died, my heart fucking broke. Music has this profound way of making us feel as if we know these people like they were our best friends. A buddy and I both quit our shit jobs that day around lunch when the news broke. We rode around backroads and listened to AIC getting stoned and just balled. We knew in that moment we had lost something that we would never get back. I miss you Layne.

I hear you. I feel that loss, that pain. I was destroyed. I’ll admit.. I was obsessed with Layne. He was & still is (always will be) my favorite vocalist. No one sang like him & no one will again. The absolute best ever & my favorite album all time is Mad Season - Above.
My favorite song of Layne’s .. Love Hate Love from AIC Facelift. Nothing can top that Live ‘90 performance in Seattle.

Many many years ago (I'm old), I used to go visit friends & my then-boyfriend in Madison, Wisc. every weekend. Drive over Friday after work, drive back Sunday afternoon. We would talk, watch TV, hang out, and of course, party. It's a college town, after all. One of our favorite bands to listen to (over & over & over) back then was of course, the Beatles.
Then one morning, I awoke to the horrible news that John Lennon had been shot and had died the night before. I was all of 19, I was gutted, and I was 60 miles from understanding friends. I then had to go to work in an office full of boring business people that didn't understand, couldn't sympathize, and didn't care one whit about this news. I should have quit then and there, drove to Madison, and cried and bawled and sung Beatles songs with my friends--who at least all had each other there to commiserate with. It's one of the things I have always regretted not doing.
Now I could say it's "ironic" or "interesting" or even "funny" that the LEAD VOCALISTS of 3 of the most iconic Seattle bands--Nirvana, AIC, and Soundgarden--have all died in odd circumstances. But one thing I do know, death and depression stalked Seattle HARD back then, and his weapon of choice was heroin. I truly pray things have gotten better over the years there, because a LOT of great music died with those singers.

Well said Zach. I remember thinking once they stopped making music/playing shows and knowing about Layne's addiction it was just a matter of time before he passed. As a fan the thought was not if but when he'd pass. The day the news broke I listened to their music and cried because we did indeed lose something we would never get back. I feel that weight til this day.

Layne had been in rehab many, many times for over a decade, cut off everyone trying to get him to quit, and rebuffed every single attempt to save his life at that point in his life.... His habit was like Kurt Cobain levels, that is one thing a lot of people don't understand about drug addictions is you have this idea in your mind that all drug addicts are dirty people who live in boxes -- that's just the ones you see around you most often. The ones begging for money at stop lights and sleeping in boxes in alleyways, the majority of them are there because they lost everything due to a drug addiction (or simply have psychiatric issues, or both) but it's almost worse to be a rockstar with a habit because you have the resources to never have to quit IF you don't want to. And when it comes to heroin in particular, your tolerance to the drug develops VERY fast which is why so many people say they don't even get high from their normal dose so will do more and more and more but every time they raise that bar that becomes their "new normal". Kurt Cobain for instance was doing $400 worth of heroin A DAY, and the implication is he'd likely have done even more than that if the ATM allowed him to draw more than $400 per day. Every time he dosed, it required two needles full of black tar heroin just to get his fix.

Mike, despite being inebriated at the time, had Layne's best interests at heart. His own family couldn't help him and Nancy would never turn her children away regardless of the circumstances. He lived with dreadful shame with what he'd become, which is a slave and Mike lived with the burden of 'what if's' and deep-seated remorse.
I have never been addicted to speed, ice all that stuff that heightens the central nervous system. Thought of it makes me ill.
Heroin, in my case, on the other hand is a b@st@rd. Been dancing with the devil on & off for 29yrs.
Whether people care to admit it or not, addiction is an insidious illness, hence the judgemental one's are not just your neighbour, the amount of judgemental 'so-called' nurses here are worse and may as well be handing out placebo's. The majority are awfully undermining and clueless. Yet when a patient (moi) has a seizure it's a f'g big fuss then though. Too little, too late may very well come their way in the future.

I too know that addiction, unfortunately to both men. I have been thru withdrawal so many times I can't count. I still have nightmares all the time, and I fear getting to an age that I need knee replacement, from years of being athlete. I know how it is a disease and not a choice. If not for the love for my adult children, I hate to think. I have been so near suicide, even picked out my clothes. I saw a clip where AIC were on stage saying Lane is not going to show, and he was almost being made fun of, someone threw something in protest. I thought how cruel to make fun of their bandmate. They obviously didn't understand. Once it has you in it's grips, without the proper help, I just don't know where I'd be. My heart breaks for all opioid addicts, and others too. But that one is by far the worst to stop. I know how lonely he must have been, and hopeless. God I hate it, and I can't stop crying. I'd do anything for my friends, and I did help one get off 20 years of crack. I'm fortunate to be able to take her in and give her a home. I've rescued her from crack houses, and I was not addict at the time, but I knew I must help. Had bottles thrown at my car and had to haul ass away. I can't say how many times I've taken her in. She is now dying due to liver failure. From years of doing any drug she could. I'm now 53, and my kids know all.and are now understanding and help others with addiction. Learn from my bad choices was what I told them daily as I was so sick withdrawing. My son had to take care of me. God I appreciate and love my kids. My heart breaks for all us addicts. I've been clean for 8 years. But feels like yesterday. I want to offer to anyone who needs to talk or needs a friend to let me know here. I'll give my email, and I'll not give up on you. Bless us all. To all the moms who have lost their babies to that horrible disease, my heart breaks. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry to ramble. I so miss all the gifts we've lost to that disease. Wish I could do something, anything to help. 💔🤟😞

Ginger Countryman - what a beautiful, thoughtful and kind comment. I’ve been down this old road too - heroin and benzos...have lost some very dear friends to addiction. At the beginning of this year, on 1/12, just a week after seeing my best friend of 23 years....I lost her. She was a poly addict but her doc was heroin closely followed by crack. I saved her so many times, several of those times while I was in the deep myself. She lived a hard life. I can’t believe that she’s gone. My heart has been shattered into a million pieces, I will never be the same. Sometimes I think that I want to join her. My life is so empty now, without her. You’re right, anyone on the outside doesn’t understand. They don’t have a clue what withdrawals feel like, how feeling sick can make you do desperate things, just to feel better. Drugs-addiction - changes our brain chemistry. People don’t seem to understand that. Anyways...thankfully you have children. Children who love and support you. I don’t, which is a blessing in many ways. Although for my beautiful best friend, her having a son wasn’t enough. :( He’s 11, soon to be 12. She & I had so many plans for the future. Now, it’s all gone. This old world can feel a very lonely place. Sorry for the ramble. Thank you for putting your heart out here. You’re a great friend as well. ❤️ RIP Layne.....RIP to my Lisa 💓♾💓

An addict friend of mine who died much to young told me once that when you take your very first hit a little demon jumps on your shoulder and is always making you score . I know it’s not real but it always stuck in my mind ... PS if anyone felt the nightmare that junkies go through withdrawing they would never go. Near it . But when your young you think you are indestructible..... the problem with having the amount of money rock stars have it’s almost certain it’s going to end badly. Most junkies can only afford enough gear just to keep feeling .OK , not stoned but just not being sick . At least after many years I managed to get that little b.... d from off my shoulder

I've wondered though because Nancy asked Mike on that rehab show if he saw Layne die. Why ask if there was no chance he could have if the door was 'bolted from inside'? She was there when the police forced the door so was there a chance the door just locked when it gets shut? My front door locks itself when it shuts. I always thought what Mike said he could remember seemed sketchy ... When he later said he was so high on the benzos he had no recollection of the next 10 days it seemed too convenient. I think he was there and that he was scared of getting in trouble, that people would lynch him. They were friends because they were addicts. Mark Lanegan too. There's a book written by the dealer that supplied them all called American Junkie

No matter how many times I hear it, it hurts me just as much as the first time I hear it. I always listen to there music and than I want to enjoy it and can feel so much of there feelings in the song. Than I get choked up. They gave the world a gift. I grew up in foster care raising my siblings with no childhood over both parents to drugs. To this day my father is not clean and he uses with my little sister. I spent my life trying to help them and to no avail, even tho I helped them live, in the end i didn't live. They have to want to be saved, it took me my whole life to be in even a worse spot always thinking that unknown number is going to be the call. No parent should ever be a cause of there child's addiction, especially when they are still a child themselves, robbing them of their life before they are even old enough to know what living is. I have lost so many friends through that battle and It is so heartbreaking, I don't wish that on anyone. Sending love and strength out to the universe , you are not alone.

I heard that another friend of Layne's wanted to try heroine (and to shoot up with him) years earlier (when Layne was on the drug - before it really started to turn on him). I heard about how Layne (having his friend's best interest at heart) bluntly told him that if he was determined to do this, that he'd have to go and shoot up somewhere else, because he (Layne) was sure as hell not going to have any part in getting his friend involved in this horrible, dark world that he was now a part of.
I think the world of Layne Staley for his intellectual intelligence, compassion, etc. One of my favorite songs that he ever wrote was called "Don't Follow" on the album "Jar of Flies." I often think that he had too much intelligence and compassion for his own good by his very nature.
