Thanks everyone for nigh on 250,000 views! I think it’s clear from the comments that this was a divisive comparison - I think everyone can appreciate the merits of a good Strat, but the PRS brings something new to the table. What do you think? 😁

I think if I had the money for either one, I'd go with the PRS... There's about 1 billion Strats in the world, Hell of a lot less of those PRS's and I like having unique things. Oh, and it sounds INCREDIBLE. Not that the Fender was ever considered a slouch... I like the way Paul goes about building a guitar. Each one feels special.

When I was learning guitar. And actually still to this day I would spend hours upon hours listening to other players, slowing down and pausing the video or cd, rewinding, pausing, replaying. When I finally dissected the right notes. I would spend 8-10 hours a day learning how to play them up to speed d and the correct phrasing. The intent. 20 years later I crafted my own sound through taking bits that I learned from various hero’s of mine and am able to play professionally. You should use this person as an opportunity to learn and grow. Not to quit!!

I have to agree....you can hear the PRS has a bit more bite and probably range but man that Fender even though it was a bit more balanced it had just the right amount of flavour ....dont know how else to explain the feeling of just right....on the other hand he sounded more like John in tone when playing the PRS....so if you want to sound closer to John Mayer in terms of his tone now it would be through the PRS. Some might think thats a no brainer but buying similar equipment doesn't always mean you'll get the sound but I think john really fine tuned the PRS in the way he wanted it to be for his purposes and PRS is a doing a good job in the models they are selling. But man for me that Fender was the one.

Owning a JM sig strat, I feel like the nostalgia of it makes me like it over the silver sky, no matter how great the silver sky is. It’s almost like people who have played or have one would agree that they are two different guitars that aren’t comparable. It’s like comparing a Les Paul to a McCarty 594. Different guitars that just look alike. I don’t get all the drama either. It’s not like John went and built his fender sig to exact specs and then called it a JM sig with a PRS logo on a fender headstock.
Both sound great in this video and can still get you there just like a Maxon OD9 and TS9 can get you in the same ball park but are still different.

I would love to try the BS prs tho, different beast than the JM sig strat.

The PRS has smoother less bitey harsh top end by design. The "sound" of all the PRS guitars will be more similar to each other than the fenders guitar to guitar of the same model. The PRS is designed top to bottom to get John's preferred tone from a Strat. If you want a strat to sound like a strat, buy a strat. If you love the tones John gets out of His vintage strats, get a PRS Silver Sky.

This Fender Stratocaster is based on his SRV Stratocaster with "defective pickups". They have scooped mids instead of a lot of mids like the Texas Specials are suppose to be. That's why the pickups are are called Big Dippers. This was the Stratocaster he played a lot before his Continuum album which was when he got the Black1 Stratocaster which sounds completely different than this Stratocaster and in my opinion it's better. A lot of people think this is gonna be his bluesy signature sound like the Black1 Strat but it's not.

Evan Herb he was given a blank check by PRS. Make whatever you want, put whatever pickups on it, and they’ll pay you whatever you want. Meanwhile Fender won’t price match because they already own the legacy of the Stratocaster. Ultimately what makes a good guitar? Resonance through quality wood and fit, quality hardware, a good setup, inspiring aesthetics, and set of pickups to match the ADSR profile you want. PRS didn’t really improve any of those qualities with the silver sky, so clearly it’s just a cash grab.

@@rowdystanley2174 - OK Rowdy, Fair point - I have some news since I posted this. I have decided to give Fender 1 last/final chance at a great Strat. I've owned a few Strats (2 CSs) that have been lack luster (tone/feel/build). So, in the spirit of "want a strat, buy a strat" I "cancelled" my PRS SS order and placed a new order for a Fender CS Willcutt 50th Anniversary w/Ancho Poblano pickups. Had an audio sample sent and it sounded perfect. It arrives this week - so we'll see. The Fender CS is in my area in SoCal and I want to support their efforts and believe they can create a great Strat. However, in general, I thinks its a shame that while they (Fender) know how create exceptional instruments, people need to pay through the nose to maybe (and I mean maybe) get one. (And don't get me started on relics! "Here, pay us $$$ and we'll drive your guitar around the parking lot tied to the back of our truck and drag it around a while". If I was a luthier at Fender I'd quit the first time they asked me to smash my work with a shop tool over and over again. Go on Reverb and search for CS Strats and tell me that they are something you can be proud to own) Every guitar in the Fender lineup should be awesome, because they know how to make awesome guitars. Stop selling me nostalgia Fender (Gibson, I'm looking at you too) and with your decades of experience, build the best guitar possible in 2019 that blows me away with tone/feel/build. Put a fair price on it & I'm there with my wallet open. If PRS is building a great instrument (and they are) then hats off to them and I support all the success that comes their way, because that's what they are all about. So with Fender, I'm really hoping they knock my socks off with this last one - because it will be my last one. Sorry for the long reply, but that's my take. Thanks Rowdy for the honest reply. SG

raceface_m he has the Fender ice picky at first. It’s Fender for me though. In general the PRS always sounds too bright to me. John imo has probably lost some of his hearing so he needs more treble. All band guys are either half deaf or have tinnitus. If not now they will. Plus the headstock is hideous on the PRS. Does that headstock look right to you? It looks like it was lopped on. Plus the 7.25 radius if not set up right will choke out the bends. I’ll take Fender thank you.

I owned and sold my JM Signature strat and got the Silver Sky when it came out and never looked back. ALL the selector tones on the SS actually work. It stays in tune better than the Fender. Playability is superb. Turned me on to other PRS guitars. PRS doesn’t have the “show” that Fender does, but it does have the “go”. No tricks, just solid engineering. If you were building a guitar like a SS, wouldn’t you want John Mayer’s input?
