In this video, I am going to review the new Army Painter Fanatic paints. Army Painter kindly sent me the Mega Paint Set to review, however I am under no obligation to say anything other than my own opinion - make sure you watch to the end as I share how I use these paints to paint two (and a half) models from Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Thor and Hulk came together really nicely and I had a great time using these paints! Let me know if you have tried them and what your thoughts are!

So far what I've used, they're mostly good. The reds from the Warm red triad are far too 'orange' even though the darkest says "Deep Red" on the side and don't hold a candle to Pro Acryls reds. I like the flesh tone triads(or "sex-iad") which helps with layering of the face and skin, making it much easier. My biggest takeaway is a good amount of the colors are "too pastel" for my tastes, because of the inclusion of heavy amounts of white in almost every color. Yes this improves coverage, but it sacrifices color intensity. Juan Hidalgo and Zumikito point these out in their review
Overall. They're good, especially for someone getting into the hobby now. The triad system is great, the coverage is outstanding however the tradeoff is the colors tend to look more pastel, and because of how much thicker they are, I recommend a medium or their stabilizer to thin over plain water. 7/10 for me. Solid, but not enough to warrant a full change from Vallejo, Monument, Scale 75 or even Citadel
Thor looks amazing, congrats to both yourself and whoever worked on those colour sets to guide the layering sequence
Excellent, good to hear your opinion on these
Cheers mate - you tried them?
❤ absolutely love seeing MCP content. Its so refreshing
Love it I was exactly the same painting ushoran
Thanks my friend , what an amazing video . I'm new to the channel and I'm super impressed with what I'm seeing , especially this video , what an excellent review. I just got the complete set of fanatics and I'm looking forward to using them. So thanks so much for a.wonderful video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I tried their speed paint metallics and it was nice. I could get basically what looked like Leadbelcher or Ironwarriors just by painting over either Grey Seer or Black primer. It was also very smooth. No mixing needed. Thanks for this review. I’ll have to try this!
Thor and Hulk both look fantastic, the paint looks great as well!! 😮😮
I think i will be getting some of these for my Fulgrim model!! 😊
Cheers
I am so happy you did the Mega Set Box video. I bought that box and frankly, I hated it as we were missing the mediums and I felt like there was a lack of luster triad colors that I was struggling with. Seeing this has 1), you are awesome, 2) shown me that I am still a noob and need to get more creative and 3) the paints are very viable for painting and it still makes me want the entire Fanatic line. Thanks, Coach!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
They looks fantastic mate! Looking foward to seeing Cap finished!
Cheers mate :)
Nice work. I have the full range of fanatics. They are defo not all the same consistency. I have some browns, khakis n greys that come out like poos lol. They do thin down well using the WP Stabiliser. Are they the best paints defo not. I also use GSW, AK 3rd Gen and Pro acryl. They are pretty close to some of these in certain colours but over all id say they are now a serious paint line to be considered. I've had fun using them but they do require some work. Not a straight form the bottle paint like most of my Pro Acryl and Ak paints.
I have over 30+ years painting experience and these are a great paint and well worth a purchase.
Thanks for the feedback! Good to hear from someone with the full range!
You just made me order some lol great job
Not guilty 🤣 hope you enjoy them!
Preordered the starter set at Adepticon. Looking forward to trying them out.
Great video and great looking minis, your experience is very similar to mine. I am really liking them and how easy they are to work with. I am glad that I splurged and bought the whole set. Every video using the 50 color set makes it seem like I would have been frustrated with the exclusions.
Glad you enjoyed it - I agree with you re: missing paints - but also enjoyed figuring out how to work round it!
@ThePaintingCoach that's fair. Even with all the colors, I'm still mixing and doing what I've always done, haha. I'm going to have to sit down and force myself to exclusively use the "triads" for a bit and see what I can do.
Love your videos man.
Thanks!
That captain America suit looks awesome. Would love to see you paint some more orc skin, and maybe even some "old world" style dwarfs with more of the fanatic metallics 👍
Cheers - I may do some Dwarfs :)
Great video! I feel “whelmed” at the range - definitely not the best (look at AK 3rd Gen), but has its merits. So much variation in consistency and coverage though.
A lot of the marketing shows 1 pass coverage over black… yeah right! Globbed on, it does, but 6/7 thin coats later and I’m still seeing black through yellow (vs Pro Acryl 3/4, AK 3 coats)
Great review from a painter I trust!
Thanks!
I have the Fanatic Complete Set and there is A LOT of variation in consistency. Some colours are so thin that even when dropped into a dry palette from only an inch height they splash like water; at the other end of the scale there are some which, despite 5+ minutes on two different mixers, still come out like puree or paste. They are evenly mixed, not like a thin layer on top of a settled base, just really REALLY thick.
They thin down better with the Warpaint Stabiliser than water. The stabiliser is basically the carrier medium in the Fanatic paints; I don't think it's in the Mega Set though ☹
It isn't sadly - I am keen to try it though! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Vallejo greens I think are pretty rad
Ypu mentioned using an airbrush to blend. Do you have a recommended tutorial on how to do that?
I don't personally - but check out some of the Spanish painters like Angel Giraldez, Jose Davinci and Sergio Calvo 👍🏻
That Thor paint job looks amazing. Wish I could find these paints here Ontario but it’s such a chore, almost like Miniature painters don’t exist in my city.
Meeplemart? Tistaminis?
@tomrea4586 I checked Maplemart, but I found another Hobby Shop. That may carry them which is a lot closer to my place than me traveling down to Spadina.
Amazon has the paints but they're overpriced.
Thanks!
Love the mcp content!
Thanks
another channel also said they cover very well but he was disappointed the red was too light
The Reds are dog water in this line. I'd stick with Pro Acryl or Monument.
How do you get the first clip to as to your video?
It is on AP's channel
@@ThePaintingCoach I know that, but what program do you use to do the screen grab?
I used my nvidia screen capture app that is part of geforce experience
@@ThePaintingCoach thanks brother!
There's something about Army Painter I don't quite like. I've been a big fan of Pro Acryl and Duncan Rhodes paints lately.
Sponsored content isnt a review..
Especially not with this product, which has turned out to be extremely limited, especially in colours
Calling that so called “red” “vibrant” is quite a bald statement… also telling that they mix well doesn’t seem true by what you show, look at the difference in saruration between the green you mixed and the green from the bottle. Already 2 “not so relatable” statement in 2 minutes and 58 seconds, yes i’m sadly skipping the other 20 minutes and call it a shill.
Seems like an extreme take after just seeing one layer actually put on a model
The Red i tried in this range(Warm Triad: Resplendent Red, Angelic Red, and Legendary Red) are actually Orange, and I despise them. Literally looks orange on the palette and when dried is orange as well. That's what happens when you overload every color with white pigment for the sake of coverage and sacrificing color
another one bought by ap. Marketing costs for them must be extreme. they dont want a speedpaints 2.0 disaster so they basically bought every CZcamsr with 20 Subs except zumikito. Hes the only one who hasnt got the Set for free with instructions what to (Not) say. They are of course not the best paints the in world. there are No "best". but in a Ranking they are this time not "Out of Rating". but top 5? no. Maybe place 8 Out of 10. new model color range comes and these Kickstarter paints. so they will go out of the top 10 very soon.
they are for clueless beginners who want to buy a big shiny Set. that was always APS targeting audience.
And maybe they should fire that "Not ceo anymore". He talks to much.
what a sad and pathetic comment 🤣😂🤣

"Clueless beginners", feeling better now after asserting your false superiority? They are for people who don't want to waste time painting one miniature for 10 hours or do 23 glazes and just want to paint whole army ASAP. Army Painter was never company for pro painters or people who dabble in display and competition painting. Perhaps that's why they call themselves "army painter", eh?
@@PrzybyszzMatplanety if you just want some color on your minis to play your army the best way is using contrast paints, if you use anything else you like to paint and want to improve, or at least you have sone sort if target quality. Miniature wargames are a hobby, not just a boardgame, part of the hobby is building and painting your minis, it’s not a “waste of time”
