- This beautiful and artistic ASL interpretation of The Star Spangled Banner before the Super Bowl seems to have been largely overlooked. Even for those of us who are hearing, Troy Kotsur brought the national anthem to life.
I must say: This is the best ASL interpretation of a song I've EVER seen or hope to see. Troy is a true artist and storyteller. I absolutely loved how he told the story of the song!
If you haven't yet, watch the movie CODA with him in it. He and Marlee Matlin are absolutely perfect.
The passion he shows is awesome
Very moving ❤
Truly exceptional!!
I absolutely love the part right at the end when he is signing “yet wave”. He brings a small, very typical version of a flag to the foreground and makes it a full size banner, that shutters and stutters as it’s shaking in the wind. The artistry in that rendition is magical and moving.
Troy's rendition was just as powerful as Chris'.
It was mesmerizing.
You can not top this in ASL interpretation! Tony took this to the highest level! For the first time in my life, I felt like I was truly witnessing what the soliders witnessed as they stood and defended our freedom just by watching this!! So POWERFUL!!
I absolutely 💯 agree!!
Almost like watching Francis Scott Key!
EDIT: Troy, not Tony.
This brings tears to my eyes. Masterfully done. Thank you for such a priceless rendition of our national anthem, Troy!!
I'm gonna tell you something right now. I've seen Bruce Springsteen live 13 times. One of those times, we had the honor of being seated right by the deaf section. I watched the signer & the deaf crowd dancing & not missing a beat the entire show. One of the top most amazing concert experiences of My Life!
Holy cow I don't even know ASL but I felt and understood every beat. When the rockets were exploding on the fort... as Chris belts out his notes... it's like I was watching a movie. :o
Thank you Troy, I'm deaf and I rely on hearing aids and I read lips, this was beautiful, again thank you so much
Wow, absolutely incredible interpretation! You really feel the hope, pride, and joy when Francis Scott Key realized, as the darkness gave way to first light, that Americans had been able to withstand the battle throughout the night and were still holding strong.
Wow this made me tear up! He did such an amazing job! You could feel the passion in every move he made!
On 9/11 I was working as an airline pilot and preparing to take off at 0900 from Washington's Dulles Airport. I was second in line behind the American Airlines 757 that was hijacked into the Pentagon. I cherish any time our National Anthem is played. This one gave me a smile, chills, and watery eyes. Thank you to you both.
Troy, you are the best!
I cried when I watched this in real time. Troy helped me to fully understand this song for the first time!
My man felt that and communicated that so fiercely and beautifully.
That is very awesome I love the way he sighs the national anthem song
He did a fabulous job. Meaningful and emotional, just like the singer. Both were moving renditions.
I read about Troy's story and it makes me so happy for him. You're a class act, brother. This was the best
Both Troy's and Chris's performance of the National Anthem not only gave me chills - it has to be one of the most emotional and amazing performances of the National Anthem ever. Respect to both of them...
Best version, ever. I cried
Troy did a stunning ASL version that raised the bar!
How amazing... his performance added a lot of feeling to vocal performance of the national anthem, which is also very beautiful.
Who sings,,?
I could watch this forever. He’s incredible!
If only I could interpret as beautifully as he did this song!!! Amazing!
Brings tears to my eyes his ASL rendition of the national anthem, in spite of how my country is treating me and others. God bless America. The country that doesn’t love me like I love it. 😢 🇺🇸 ❤
Wow...this made me emotional. The way he painted the picture of the soldiers fighting... This was beautiful. So inspiring
Seriously in tears watching him. Loved this so much
Me too 😢
Same 😭 God bless America 🇺🇸 🙏🏻❤️🤍💙
Well, this man they have one in Academy award, this is his finest performance. This is also one of the greatest performances of all time. It should be commissioned as the official performance of our national anthem.
Thank you for posting this. All the videos I kept finding was just the singer and the players reactions. I wanted to see Troy signing.
Same here! That was amazing!
I’m using this to start my next quarter of USH - we begin & end with a rendition of an anthem through an Art in History lesson, exploring missing voices. I so appreciate this video focused solely on Troy’s performance. ❤
Congratulation! One the best of performance from a deaf person ... made with love. Thank you.
Just watched the ASL halftime show. Both amazing works. The facial expressions do so much of the work, but how they reflect the singers versions of the song is unique.
Beautiful
I watched this without sound to get a true appreciation.
Beautiful, Absolutely Beautiful
This guy made me prouder than I felt in a long awhile. No disrespect to Chris!
👏🏻👏🏻👐🏻👐🏻👐🏻👐🏻👏🏻👏🏻 brilliant fantastic I am deaf myself to see this wow !!! From British 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Absofuckin'loutely brought me to tears.
I will always keep this close to my heart.....a def. keeper.

Goosebumps. OMG brilliant!
Straight up CHURCH! So much power and meaning conveyed in his performance! Broke me down.
This is the BEST EVER interpretation of this song in ASL I've EVER seen. Troy is the cream of the crop!!! I cried all the way through, thank you TROY!!! 😭🙏
An american anthem is lovely and not easy to singing and playing
Amazing how without a single word you can feel the pride in our flag and the freedom she represents
Exactly. You are so right.
That was cool to watch !!!
Wow I didn’t even know that was a thing. Story telling through sign language. It was moving and I was appreciating the beauty of ASL as a language. Much like someone speaking French, I have no idea what they are saying but I loved hearing it. I just experienced the anthem in a whole new way. ❤
Beautifully done Troy! Amazing!
Troy so beautiful sign language be proud that is the way should be 👍🏻😉🤟🏻 the best
Wow just Wow❤
I hope he performs in every National Anthem. He express's so much emotion by signing it makes me appreciate the National Anthem more🤓
Awesome, absolutely awesome. Thank you Sirs! Shared.
Goosebumps ❤❤❤❤
Absolutely beautiful. I could watch this over and over again!
Thank you so much! I had chills. Beautiful interpretation and telling of the story. 💞💞
Amazing
Absolute magnificence.
WOW! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😭🤧❤️❤️❤️🤗
Absolutely brilliant👏👏👏
Totally awesome!! We need more of this
Troy is the best he brings his sense of humor into everything he does
coda in English and Les Béliers in French are so alike. Though the areas and family entreprise and music different the core of the story is the same. Two beautiful and touching films.
gorgeous
That's so moving🙌👍
Beautifully Amazingly Deeply Emotionally ASL Handshape open free Signhand Flying show feelings.. I love that..Congrats Tony
Beautifully sung and signed!
Troy is a national treasure, guard him with all your might 🩵
I can't wait to be fluent in ASL
I am so glad you posted this, I have been wanting to see the full version.
Give him another Oscar, right now!
Troy is amazing. I love Deaf culture, because I took ASL in college. One rule in class: no speaking, only signing.
Him and Justina should go on tour
That is amazing.... Just as good as the rest of the show..
I don't even know ASL, but this was beautiful
He should have been introduced!
this guy deserves a whole bunch of credit and props im literally moved by this u told the story just like Chris Stapleton sung it beautifully done sir
カッコ良すぎる
WOW!
I've been geeking off of people reacting to Chris' rendition of The Star Spangled Banner and I was wondering if there was a video focused on the ASL and I found this.
Amazing. Some of the people reacting to the anthem the regular video just showed a quick clip but people mentioned his gestures seemed to match Chris's voice & tone.
If Troy is deaf and didn't react to the way Chris sung the song. Then kudo's to Troy for that performance. I am not much of a fan of interpretation dance and this is close. But I was riveted, the combination of that performance to Chris singing was the perfect match.
Another question: How do they get the timing? The way Chris sung the song it was longer than standard if you played it off of the sheet music. Did Chris give them a tape of his planned performance and with they he was able to get the timing?
The ASL did a wonderful job of telling the story. The "broad stripes and bright stars" got me. And by the time "The flag was still there" I think someone was cutting onions.
Give Chris another Grammy for Best Live Performance and give Troy one too! If the ASL Community has awards, then Troy should be nominated.
Troy is a Deaf actor, so he was performing the whole thing without reacting to Chris’s voice. I’m sure they practiced together beforehand so that Troy could observe Chris’s performance to get a feel for the tone and vibe.
As for the timing, Deaf people usually experience music through vibrations, so whenever the music is playing, they can feel the heavy base notes and the vibrations. Each note feels different based on pitch and volume, and although I’m not sure how well they can tell the difference between all that at once, it does help a lot with timing and knowing how the music is flowing in terms of pitch, volume, and tempo.
The way Deaf people are able to interpret music is so amazing! You should definitely watch Justina Miles at Rihanna’s halftime show at the Super Bowl. It was absolutely incredible!
bad ass man
Does anyone have the idea how did Troy do it on the right timing?
There are ASL Interpeters there to assist
FAB-u-lous
Playing Super Bowl LV national anthem ASL and this video side by side, there are quite different.
Are the differences between these two performances came from dialect like reasons?
Does anyone know what he’s signing at the end, when Chris is singing “and the home of the brave”? I know some sign but I’m having trouble understanding that part.
In a nutshell he’s signing “Army” “lined up” , “marching forward” , and ends with “strong” done very slow and powerful.
@@everythingasl9745 basically the meaning behind the song.. Who is the really braves ones? America's people is free but it was the soldiers and their action that is brave and that is what he is explaining in his version. SOOOOOOOOO beautiful!!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an interpretation that made clear that the “brave” were the soldiers.
Looks like The Boss.
bro was an airbender XD
Makes a Canadian guy proud to be Deaf.
Congrats Troy..Sorry not Tony...
That dude can’t sing, glad this was uninterrupted.
If they had, it would be like the singing stopped. There's definitely rules with Sign that many don't know, and losing eye-contact is like plugging your ears.
He signs ASL is much different from anyone from the past years. He’s so beautiful signs in ASL!! I love it! 🤟🏻🥰❤️
@@tiggerlady2352 I’ve never been a fan of football (I’m female and 50+).
But when whoever “produces” this started to be “inclusive” by having someone sign the National Anthem, that’s the only part of the game i watch.
I wasn’t able to watch this year (long story, won’t elaborate), so i was happy to stumble upon this video.
I agree!
This is much better than other signers.
@@stephanievalentine3058 i know sometimes the shot of the signer “fades” in/out to include footage of whoever is singing, the players or the crowd.
Or the signer is shown in a “box,” and if they move around “too much” no-one can see what’s going on.
completely unnecessary
Do say more…
What do you mean??!!
I want to learn ASL more than I ever have after watching this.
