Michael Hundt 1611 - Rapier play Fig. 94

  • In this exercise by Michael Hundt from 1611, it becomes clear that sometimes you have to admit to taking your legs in your hands. Even then, it was obviously clear to the masters when they were outmatched. Besides, this piece is real and at the same time a great fun... please do not take it too seriously ;)

That's exactly why you should throw it. It's a distraction and swords are expensive so they might just be satisfied with that and leave you alone. Regardless you get a headstart and it's much easier to run away than to chase someone. After the runner chooses the directory and can trick the chaser. There's almost 0 chance you fight 5 people with an equally long weapon, if you could carry a spear or an halberd then yeah, by all means try your luck, however, those are usually not civilian weapons and can not be carried freely.

Does the sword slow you so much that it's worth discarding the only thing that would give an attacker hesitation to lunge at you? I'm thinking about how if I ran into a narrow alley or path where I could turn and fight, I might wish I had kept my weapon, especially if I am a faster or more fit runner than most of those chasing me.
