    I'm surprised you decided to mention Titanic survivors and didn't include Charles Joughin. He was the chief baker on the ship, and when he realized the ship was sinking, he helped himself to a couple of stiff drinks, helped get people onto the lifeboats, and threw whatever furniture that looked like it might float into the water for people to hold onto. Joughin ended up riding the ship down into the water, and ended up being rescued by one of the lifeboats, but somehow managed to avoid anything worse than swollen feet, despite alcohol normally promoting hypothermia.

    • @anasazidarkmoon
      @anasazidarkmoon Před 10 měsíci +390

      @@HaliaStone according to everything I've read, alcohol makes you feel warm because it gets your blood vessels to open up, but that also makes your core temp go down faster, which is why survival and medical texts recommend against alcohol consumption for warmth. It could be that Joughin had a genetic tweak that helped him process alcohol differently than an average person, though. At least, that's my best guess.

      I've always wondered if he even thinks this is all real or if he actually died and this is the afterlife. How do you keep believing in reality after an experience like that? Stuck in a pocket of air underwater in pitch black while fish that you can't even see swim around you...then suddenly a hand sticks out? I might think it had ended right there and nothing after was real.
      I don't know how you move on psychologically from something like that. Ever.

Unfortunately, Zeus’s unexperience out in the water meant he wasn’t use to the water life, which caused him to spiral into a deep depression, eventually leading to him starving himself. Can we take a minute to appreciate the captain, crew, and passengers of RMS Carpathia? They pushed their ship so hard that night they permanently damaged her engineering plant reducing her top speed from them on. When the someone pointed out to the lead engineer that the gauges were in the red he responded by hanging his hat on said gauge. The passengers gathered blankets, distributed warm food and drink and generally helped the survivors in any way they could. The entire ship came together to race at higher than top speed into the same ice field that had just sunk RMS Titanic to rescue as many as they could. Despite Carpathia's owners, Cunard Line, and Titanic's owners, White Star Line, being bitter rivals.

    I have heard about the story of the USS Indianapolis. It had previously carried components, including uranium, for the "Little Boy" atomic bomb. After it sank, the survivors were stuck in the water with sharks, having hallucinations and delirium, and covered with hazardous materials such as oil burning their skin off. As stated in the video, the sharks killed many, but many more also died of starvation, hypothermia, dehydration, salt poisoning, injuries, and some even killed themselves. The plane that arrived to the scene first alerted through the radio of the scene. A US Navy PBY Catalina seaplane also arrived and against orders, took risky maneuvers to land on the water and pick up as many men as possible, which damaged the plane so much that it could not fly. The men who were most injured or looked closest to death were picked up first, with 56 survivors total picked up. Eventually, ships arrived to pick up the men on the plane and in the water. Out of almost 1,200 men on the ship, only 316 survived.

      And after the rescue the captain of the ship was a national pariah receiving all of the hate and blame. Even got court martialed for it.
      This in spite of the fact that there was literally nothing he could have done. Something even the commander of the Japanese sub that sank them attested to. Even survivors of the sinking had his back.
      He would be exonerated in 2000.
      Which is nice and all, but didn't do much to prevent his suicide in 1968.

    4:14; Decompression sickness is more commonly known as "The Bends" because any diver goes down at least 50 feet in the ocean, the release of bubbles in the scuba tank will form from the blood stream in someone's body. These bubbles are released by nitrogen which make 80% of the atmosphere, and a scuba diver has to go to a hyperbaric chamber to prevent decompression sickness.

    One of the most unbelievable of mine was Louie Zamperini, who's story made it into a very famous book. He served as a pilot during WWII and his crew's plane went down in the pacific with only 3 survivors. They were at sea for 47 days and were subjected to shark attacks, multiple storms, and even one event when a Japanese aircraft spotted them and began shooting at their raft. They were eventually found by a Japanese aircraft carrier, where they were taken as Prisoners of War and suffered in brutal concentration camps for years until they were finally rescued at the end of the war.

It’s about a guy named Louis Zamperini who crashed and went out to sea for 47 days while WWll was going on. I thought It’d be a good idea to point out that I happen to eat popcorn kernels after I saw your weird addictions video. My family says it’s unsafe to eat the kernels, but since a young age, around six years old, I’ve been digging to the bottom of the bowl and picking out the kernels that didn’t pop and eat them. I normally eat kernels that look softer or that have been just slightly popped and then chew on them first with my molars. I thought about telling Dr. Mike this to know the real opinion from a doctor! Thanks!

    Seeing Michael apologize to the humpback whale made me smile. The whale certainly didn’t intend to do that to Michael had it known that Michael wasn’t on its usual menu of krill and smallish fish, or that he was far too large to swallow. It was simply a case of the whale doing what humpback whales do and taking in large mouthfuls of sea water to filter out its dinner through its baleen. Michael just so happened to be in the sea water that the whale took a mouthful of. I bet if the whale could it would apologize too.
