    The grubs are always a surprise you do t expect to see, however it did give the piece a lot more character to it. I thought maybe you were gonna change your mind on a bowl and make a lamp with a light of some sort coming through the grub trails. I myself haven’t seen a Birch burl. The most common burls around here are Cherry burls and I have also picked up a few Willow burls. I would love to add a piece of Birch to my wood turning portfolio. Beautiful piece all around. Nice job

    When I first saw grubs like that in my wood, I wasn’t nearly so calm lol. I screamed, did a flappy dance, took a pointy chip of wood and then flung the grub into the snow. Stomping them is probably a lot easier than making them sail towards death through the winter air 😂

  • @opalumbre

    It may not be great for turning but i absolutely LOVE worm wood. They make such intricate patterns through the wood and the tunnels tend to have a lighter color than the rest of the wood

  • @jarmstrong2843
    @jarmstrong2843 Před 2 lety +76

    Most of the wood I turn has those worms or what they leave behind. Over the years I have learned to embrace the worm tunnels since they only add character to the wood turning. Using resin to fill the holes and tunnels only gets expensive since most of the resin is turned away and ends up on the floor.

      It always reminds me of kintsugi (Japanese tradition of repairing broken things with gold, ending up with the act of being broken resulting in a more beautiful whole) when I see them fill the bore holes like that.
