Nice to see your dad can still help out . Savor those times He won't be around forever .When my dad passed it left a great void, he taught me a lot God bless
I agree. I lost my dad when he was 77 in 1990. I saw in my late 20's at the time. He was suffering with dementia but if he was asked a question on either mechanical or electronic fields he would give you the answer accurately ask him what he had for breakfast he had no memory of it. I miss him every day especially when it comes to either mechanical or amateur radio
I don't understand the economics of radiator repair either. The last IH radiator I had out was going to be $500 to recore, or $600 for a new one. I ended up buying a used radiator from a junk yard for $250. Thanks for the shout out. Your channel is really growing. No stopping you now!
Your welcome man! I love your videos I wanna see you get back out to the industrial horde and get some stuff going lol I live for that old junk! As for channel growth you are gaining too! It took me forever to pass you, your likely to pass me back up soon as I don’t have as much time for youtube during the summer but then you may not either... anyway keep up the good work! Maybe we’ll make it somewhere with this lol
@@DieselCreek Thanks again! I would not stress CZcams in the summer. I've found views really drop off a cliff. Everyone is busy. It picks up again in the fall.
I agree, mine kind of exploded around Christmas and it’s slowed way down but still gaining... slowly
@@DieselCreek That's the same for me. I went from 8K subscribers in September to 50k in January. Then things slowed way down. We will have to see how it goes this year with all the pandemic craziness.
Matt & Wes great content from both you guys. Matt the vacuum filling is the only to do it. It quickly identifies leaks if it doesn't hold a vacuum. weeping waterpump seals, bad radiator cap or core.
I'm a retired diesel mechanic and hearing you complain the whole time working on that truck just reaffirmed the fact that I don't miss doing most of that stuff every day LOL
Sadly people who designed those things were not users....
@Corona Virus That's the problem here : engineers are not users !
@@tomjoad1363 Maybe they were users, but probably not repairers.

meatball lol my spirit animal
A joy to watch that little guy go after his ball, and bringing it back all excited :-)
“This has turned into much more of a pain in the butt than it ever should be”
That describes every simple job, ever.
And the simpler it should be................
So much for good ole "plug and chug" parts 🤪😄🥵😉
you said it.
I like to position myself where the radiator will drain right into my eyes and face, that way I can get a really good feel of whats going on in there.
ROFL....No matter even if I let somebody else do the draining, I seem to get splattered. Good post.
I know the feeling and the taste
This, sir, is a great comment. Rarely is there audible sarcasm in a written word.
@@ypop417 I've been fortunate enough to avoid the taste, but the feel is just slimey.
I hate the feel, taste and the smell of coolant. I've had many a shower myself 20 minutes into a shift.
Rosco and Meatball are 40% of why I watch all your videos... They are so different, but so loveable!
The other 60% is the quality work on the diesels and other fun gear! Got my first diesel this year in my '91 F-Super Duty Custom with Liftmoore crane on the flatbed and started watching a lot of videos on diesels, which is how I came by this channel (and subscribed within a video and a half).
I have to give you a humongous shout out for the dogs and the exercise ball...what a nice personal kinda touch instead of going straight to a repair ..THANKS
I must say, you have the best music, I enjoy watching due to the content and music. Listening to your western Pa accent reminds me of home. Thanks
Great video as always Matt 37:00 @Diesel Creek
I know this comment is about four years too late, but that radiator/intercooler/condenser assembly is meant to come out as an assembly and split apart after it’s out of the vehicle. It is much easier to reassemble it that way. Great content as always sir.
Back in the sixties in Minnesota, I froze fighting a radiator. I started cutting the shroud in half with the top half easy to remove. Radiator easy !! Now I see lots of cars have that.
I enjoy your dogs anytime I see or hear them!!!
When filling the system with concentrated coolant, using distilled (not purified) water is worth it for your mix - will help keep the corrosion down compared to minerals in city or well water. Get it from the grocery store for $0.99 a gallon. Still cheaper than buying pre-mixed coolant.
Interesting tip thanks I just bought some for my tractor.
I know, from ugly experence, how much pain and suffering this video does not show. You are a can do dude, Matt!
Meatball just to adorable with that yoga Ball Matt 😂 1:00 @Diesel Creek
I can't even remember the last time one of these projects wasn't way more difficult than it should have been.
I think you should include Meatball in more of your videos. Great dog!
It's funny to watch meatball having so much fun playing.
Direct bolt in part fits perfectly after some modifications with a grinder. Gotta love it.
Thanks for sharing Matt, liking the content.
The Florida pool pump motor bearing repair guy When Service Calls Longwood approved ! that was good info DC
Surge bottle= expansion tank. I was shocked at the price of that radiator! I changed the one in my C3500 and couldn't lift it out at first thinking it was stuck...nope, just so much rust inside it weighed 80+ pounds. Love your videos and your work ethic. At 64 years old gives me inspiration to go work on the numerous projects I have.
Thanks for a nice and interesting video. I'm not an expert but I really like the sound of the engine.
"Meatball" Is a great name for that dog. You couldn't have picked a better name in my opinion.
You are just having a run of maintenance issues. At least you seem fully capable of handling them. This is a great lesson about being more self sufficient than the regular city citizen. Thank you for documenting it and giving those of us who want to learn another source of education.
good luck.. 2.1, only 27 and getting older everyday. be well, be safe. I am 84 and really enjoy watching your videos. tks.. 2.16
16:17 "Only 27 and not quite as limber as I used to be, I just pulled something climbing up here." Too funny Matt. I'm almost 69 and I pulled something just watching you haul out the old radiator. Well look at it this way, you'll have an easier time with the new radiator to flush and change the coolant. Neighbor across the street from me has a Boston terrier and it body surfs on the exercise ball they have for it. I reckon Meatball might have a problem doing that.😳🐶😂. Great episode and it was good seeing your Dad give you an expert hand. I look forward to the next. I hope you and yours remain healthy and safe and cheers from an old retired coot living in Tennessee.❤️👍😷🍻✌️
Boys, fyi, it only gets worse.
Memorial Day weekend 2021, eating Chili dogs and binge-watching Diesel Creek! Doesn't get any better than this.
I love your Meat Ball! I have an male AmStaff and a female Akita, huge dog fan here.
You have some very interesting material, the way you present it is like we are right there wrenching with you making it even more interesting. Thank you so much for helping us guys and gals out here learn. :)
I love "The Meatball" he's great! Rosco looks like a good Doggie too
I had 5 trucks. $100 is change. Nothing ever cost less than $1000. Life goes on. Stay cool.
Radiator repair is a lost art.
“This has turned into much more of a pain in the butt than it ever should be”. --A phrase uttered by everyone
Everything is a pain in the butt, and the newer it is the more pain it is. At least his radiator looks like metal rather that plastic junk like all the new ones.
No not every one you a Christian would not blasphem their best friend NO NEED FOR IT no one would blasphem any other lord from any other faith. so why should not just this nice chapp but anyone at all xx
@@mrwindowcleaner1000
No one blasphemy any Lord or God, just said , "it was a pain in the butt "
@@mrwindowcleaner1000 I see what you are talking about, around `10:10, but it's not necessarily blaspheming, it is appealing for help.
Antifreeze running down my arm into my armpit my favourite kind 😂😂😂
Gotta love those high quality, hi spec, made in America radiators...
Wes is a very talented gearhead...you are as well..i like old diesel stuff and finding out what makes them tick..i'm a retired over the road trucker..cheers from a former Pa resident now enjoying the good life in the gulf shores area
My Pug Joey Bear, just died last year, 10 weeks shy of his 15th Birthday! He made all those same Beautiful "Noises", panting an breathing as Meatball Does! Lol! :) Great to hear again!!! :)
Nice video Matt. Always great to see dad! 👍
I enjoyed the radiator removal, and replacement with a brand new one, job!
Well done, Matt!
The replacement core is a lot better quality and they always seem to fit nicely. That is why I go with the recore
Pouring that antifreeze sounds like me at 3:30 or so every morning lol.
Generally I'd change out all hoses with a new radiator install. Just good insurance & not too much extra cost.
Make sure that upper radiator hose has a secure bracket. If the hose shakes going down the road it will weaken the upper hose port. I learned that on my M-11 Sterling Dump Truck. TD Atlanta
I get to install a radiator on Monday in our dump truck, fun fun !
yup the vac for the cooling system is a pretty cool bit of kit I have one as I am a semi retired master mechanic
Love those old Internationals, even though typically they're usually pretty beat up. This one looks like it's in real nice shape. Nice truck
It's always like that making new with old stuff! Done that once too many times with computers and houses! Sometimes when you expect a job to last 10 minutes, it last for hours and hours and you have to spend a lot more money than you originally tought! Good job Matt, continue your excellent videos showing what's like to really work with old stuff... it's not fun and games all the time!
Good job, those are hard to do and I've done a few of them. :-) Forgive me if you already know this, I'm not trying to be a know-it-all. You need to check your coolant at regular intervals--at least every engine service--using a dip-strip that checks for pH balance. Even with Anti-Cavitation in the coolant there will be minute spots of cavitation on the cylinder liners. If the pH reading has gone vert low it's acidic and that liquid around the outside of the air bubble on the cylinder liner will be acidic. If the pH goes too high, it's alkaline and that can etch liners as well. If either condition causes a hole in the liner you will grenade the engine.
Judging from the way the old coolant looked I don't think that system was maintained right, a lot of the green stuff is the copper and/or brass a too acidic system has eaten away.
If you ever do decide to take the front off (engine cowl or cover) don't let the elderly man help you as that piece is not only heavy, but awkward. We used to help each other when we had to take them off and we were the age you are now.
HTH
What causes this, is it when the coolant gets too old. Thanks.
When all else fails use a 5 lbs sledgehammer. It does not fix anything, but along with a beer it helps you calm down and rethink things. Come to think of it, maybe skip the sledge and procede directly to the beer. Great video. ☺
Matt I can’t wait till the end of the video to say this. My experience is flush/wash/do what you have to to make sure the block has all the crap out of it. The stuff in the radiator neck looked BAD. Put some additives in the new fluid.
the ruckus from Meatball makes me smile....more Meatball !!
Very sweet pup!
It never fails it always seems like the radiator neck is always the first to crack and it's always the first to grab onto while doing pull outs and installations they ought to put a big sticker on it that says not a handle for installation or removal LOL that look like a extremely hard job glad you got your dad to help you out would have been hell to put in alone. Good video man you stay safe and stay well and as always God bless
THANK YOU… for filming the IMPORTANT action of pouring the rad fluids into a barrel AND NOT ON THE GROUND. Still too many people contaminate the ground water/water ways by just dumping it. THANK YOU again. Anti-Freeze is deadly to animals. They are attracted to its sweetness.
YOUNG MAN YOU HAVE REWATCHABILITY, GOOD SECOND THIRD TIME AROUND
I've always referred to that surge tank as a barf tank. The coolant barfs back into that tank under pressure. I have an OEB Bulldog, they are.... special!
Was a little pricey but there's no better feeling than knowing you did it right the first time
The sparks from the grinder were cool - none the less...
Always feels so good to complete repairs like that.
Good job Matt, but Meatball was definitely the star in this video
He’s a lot of fun!
Those vacuum fillers are pretty easy to use and you can get some around 100 dollars. Makes filling cooling systems easy.
The Chinese rad probably would have fit no problem. Lol
Yes but it would be made of tin foil and painted with lead paint.
I agree with you source parts with what you can afford. Dont worry about what they tell you here. Great video and thanks and keep them coming.
nice job glad to see that you got it fixed .
The manufacturers always want you using a extension and a u-joint for every thing! Knuckle busters! lol 😂
You should marketing your new underarm Antiperspirant . Too auto mechanics lol
good job done Matt.
Also very good advice on the SCA’s most people don’t realize the importance
I really enjoy your videos. You don't talk too much and you make videos entertaining. Keep up the good work!
Love your content, such a patient person! I would probably have set fire to the damn thing after all that! Awful when you pay a lot for something and it still doesn't fit properly! Great video Matt, have a great week.
Ugh antifreeze everywhere. I hate radiator repair. Old trick you could try next time your in need of a quick fix; separate the fins around the area of the leak, pinch the leaky core together (you can even cut it and fold it over), soldier the hemmed section shut on both ends at the cut. It works great, but is only a temporary fix because the radiators are usually rotten and start leaking everywhere. New is the way to go, stinks it was so pricey. I enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing. 👍😁
Quick tip: Drain fluids over on the neighbors property, that way you won't need any of those cans, funnels, or containers. Just a hacksaw for that bottom hose, done.
Lmao that neighbor is part of the reason I’m called diesel creek
That was funny
What a PIA. Great content.
I dabbled a little in radiator repairs, and its really hard to get the repairs to last. It would hold tight for a while, but I think its the vibrations that kill the repair after a while. You also have temperature changes. Attempting to solder it, made my radiator leak more. Epoxy worked best for me.
We love seeing and hearing meatball the Bulldog!
Andrew Camarata fixes his own radiators. Watch his video to learn. He finds the leak and heavily solders the area. It don't look pretty, but it works. You both have great content.
And AC will spend the rest of his life fixing junk instead of making money running a machine that was fixed right the first time.
@@mattywho8485 he makes money fixing junk via views. Also his main equipment is reliable.
New Replacement parts seem to be cheaper for everything these days Over Repairing parts labor cost are ao much higher nowadays Especially for skilled labor Matt 15:40 @Diesel Creek
Nice radiator nice job Matt. I was trying to help from where I was at but couldn't do much but I tried. Carry on with ur good work.
That is a huge radiator by todays standard and I hope winter road salt doesn't hurt it much.
I find it interesting to watch various repairs and things. I've had to rely on just myself with my mechanical things..
Lots to be learned here on CZcams, I’m no pro but I can fix just about anything with enough googling and head scratching
Love dogs no apology needed.
Ever time ya lifted on that rad I could tell you were counting to 10 and cursing under your breath! Lol
Superb video Matt, cannot beat a angle grinder to "modify" your new Rad, nearly $1000 for a rad.. WOW !!!!!!!!
You’re lucky to have him
Wes is a awesome mechanic!
Did the same with my John Deere tractor . I bought a new one from John Deere and retro fitted it to my tractor with the package that came with it for $200 more than having my old one redone for the third time . Zero issues and better cooling then when it was new .
Beer thirty brother! Always a thumbs up from me! Thanks for sharing Matt
Great video thanks Matt. On every job something always bites you in the butt and causes problems. I would have changed the upper and lower radiator hoses at this time as well. Good insurance later on. Thanks
You should check and see if there was a coolant filter option for that truck, and rig a copy up. It will put off the next radiator change by years.
Best wishes
Good job. I know you are glad that is done. Have a great weekend.
Nice one Matt loved it
Love that dog😂
My take a way -- repairing old radiator even if it cost more could save headaches of bolt alignment issues with new radiator. Time is money. Love your videos.
All things considered, not a bad price on the radiator. My intercooler on my rzr cost a couple hundred more and is prolly an 1/8 of the size of that monster.
Wow Matt that was a great video I'm glad that you took us along to show us how you done pretty much the radiator to get it out and put it back thanks for the video will be waiting for the one next week thank you from Jefferson City Tennessee
It's funny how certain types of people just seem to find each other. Love your channel, love Wes' channel, and now you're recommending his channel, gotta love it.
He’s got some cool content!
I feel your pain. I had a 94 Kenworth T800, $2200.00 for the radiator.
@@DieselCreek He definitely has, but so do you. I've learned a lot just from watching people like Wes and yourself work.
Right with ya friend , your every word is my thought

Matt: "I took the liberty of uh flushing out the system, while you guys weren't lookin'."

Having a panic attack every time meatball eyes that coolant, had a buddies dog get into some antifreeze in the garage. Horrific situation one i wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Awesome video!
