    Been using fish tank water from water changes last few months Claire and my plants seem to love it. I do a water change every week and fill a few buckets and keep covered outside to use to water with. It's the best tip I could give anyone!
    Got myself that Alacosia Zebrina too, the local Dobbies garden centre had one half price at just 12 pounds just cos it has 2 dying lower leaves, basically just needed those removing and a good drink and now looking great 😀

    I've been having issues with my Thai Constellation, it's put out a new leaf that refuses to open fully and it's basically stopped growing. I wondered if there may be root in the roots, but you mentioning netting around the roots, I did feel something in the pot that could be netting stopping it growing! So I'll be taking it out of the pot tomorrow to see what's going on. I had no idea they would net the roots, so thanks for that tip.

    • @Arcangeline
      @Arcangeline Před 2 lety +1

      I think it's rarer to find net round the roots of a big plant if you bought it larger. Monstera leaves not unfurling or being misshaped is quite often a pest issue (from experience) so do a really good check for thrips and spider mites

    13:54 Be careful with that high humidity. Just like with water, light and heat, you can have too high humidity, which can prevent plant transpiration and eventually cause root rot (it's basically the same issue as over-watering). You can also have too much air circulation on your plants, which can cause fan stress or wind burn, but when you have as many plants you do, it's rarely an issue seeing as the collected transpiration from all the plants is so high. However, for people that only have a few plants or keep their plants in a large room, a fan isn't needed at all. Simply walking past your plants or opening/closing a door will cause enough wind gust to circulate the air over the plant.
    21:55 This is correct! If your plants are still producing new growth, you should keep fertilizing to support the growth and keep the plant healthy. Still, it's a good idea to stop adding fertiliser in the later fall months if your plants seem dormant, as the risk of causing damage to the plant is always greater if you over-fertilize.
    Speaking of dormant plants, 6:56 you can actually convert low light plants into high light plants, seeing as a plant doesn't know the difference between outdoor or indoor. So when the plant sits in a low light basement, it simply thinks it's in winter season where there's less sun and therefor switches to a dormant phase. But if you gradually introduce the plant to more light and heat, the plant will start to change as it thinks spring season is here. The reason this works is because there's really no such thing as a true 'low light plant', there are simply plants that can thrive better in low light conditions than others, but the tropical plants we buy all naturally grow in indirect light conditions.

    I use Levoit humidifiers also and LOVE them. I have 2 4L and recently bought a 6L that I haven't used yet. Plan on using for winter. I'm in midwest USA so winter is very dry! Between my ceiling fan and humidifiers, I'm able to keep the humidity around 60 - 65% in a room open to my living room and it has made an incredible different with my plants in every season! Thank you for mentioning them before, I definitely took your advice and totally agree!

    I have been struggling so much with my anxiety lately, so I have been doing a lot of plant care to make up for it. And I noticed my biggest plant out of my collection, which is a philodendron rojo congo had a root(killerpot 🤪) on it. Now that I’ve taken it off I’m excited to see if it’ll be bigger 😍 I had a panic attack just before and I saw you updated and it helped me calm down, so thank you❤️

    Just found you today - love how engaging you are. Just a thought about radiators - I have my parrots in a North facing room and struggle with cold in the winter (I’m in Canada). I need to keep the humidity up for them (and now my plants). I supplement the central heat with an infra-red heater and it does not affect the relative humidity as much as other types of heaters. Rather large investment but beats filling humidifiers constantly!

    If you can handle purple light get the purple because they are specifically for foliage. I use Walmart bulbs $9/ea and my plants leaves are literally doubled in size. 16 hours of light and 8 hrs of dark.

    Claire, I love your channel and your accent and your dog, Yoli?. I’m from California and I feel like my plants should grow quickly because of my location but it’s dry heat and some of my plants just won’t grow or die (monstera) so Idk how to check the roots without disturbing the entire plant. I do like using laundry in the plant room to increase humidity. Maybe I’ll try repotting in a clear orchid pot. I just don’t want the roots to get caught in the slits of the orchid pots. I’m rambling. Keep spreading your joy.

    Making ice in a freezer and letting it melt in the same room will actually increase the temperature, because the freezer will have to work harder and create more heat

    Thanks Claire, again lovely video. Quick question on the pilea, mine is growing really well with several pups in a north facing window how just some of the leaves have curled like pringles...I read could be too much water...but definitely not over watered...under perhaps?? Thanks x

      Not Claire but wanted to share that when mine did that it needed a repot. The leaves straightened out and have been fine ever since. I noticed it needed a repot cos the plastic pot felt very full (hard to squish) and it needed water more frequently that I used to. Not sure if multiple causes for leaf curl but that’s what helped me anyways - good luck with yours and hope you figure out the issue!

    That is one of the things I love about living on a tropical island. Don't need to worry about humidifiers, or bringing them inside for winter, etc. I have everyone in my backyard in dif. levels of shade and rotate bringing them indoors when I want a change.
    That's not to say I don't have any struggles. I can't seem to keep begonias alive, my hibiscus plants, for some reason, are a hit or miss kinda deal (they are either gorgeous and thriving or dead 🥺... seriously, I've cried over them.), and some of my orchids can be a bit of a pain in the neck.
    Overall tho, I've noticed that the more I ignore my plants a don't fuss over them, the better they do! 😂
