- My autistic son and I went to Parliament and got to enter a private area to see his obsession (Big Ben) strike 12 Noon.

This video was on my 11th birthday!
Closest I got to it in 79 was across the road,I was sitting on the wall by the Thames,I couldn't take my eyes of it,the shearer size on it.
And Big Ben is on News At Ten,how the close ups of the clock faces are done is brilliant, skillfully,does anyone know?
I,was excited in 79 looking up at it from the Thames river bank.
It would be too loud up close but I'd enjoy hearing it in the distance. If I ever save enough money for a boat trip to England. Flying hurts my ears just as much as loud sounds. My ears have Pop Rocks in them when landing. Two trips to Florida to visit relatives was two plane trips too many. After that we went by train, which I enjoyed.
I would like to visit Cambridge, various places in the countryside, Kensington Palace, Althorp, and Westminster Abbey.
(Why not St. Paul's Cathedral as well, you wonder? Because that architecture gives me a headache. I love Gothic and Tudor architecture.)

I,like Big Ben my self,and i'm a grown up man.Used to watch it strike 1pm on the News At One,but had a really in depth interest since 79,but couldn't be close up like that as the clock close up frecks me out, always wanted to know what its like going up inside it,but I wouldn't have the guts,and i'm not afraid of nothing,love Big ben but the thought of toughing the tower or being in side it i'd go half way up,and would what to come down,the fact i'd be on the steps inside it would freck me out, stupid to say,but its true,being next to the clock faces or toughing the glass,or Big Ben's bell it self,no thanks,or going right up to aytan light where its nearly 315 foot,i'd love,and want to,but my stomach and nevens would say no chance.👍
@jamesnicholson2503 We are going up inside it on a tour next month. Its difficult to get tickets but I was lucky.

How loud is big ben?
The hour bell is 118 decibels almost as loud as a jet plane taking off when the tower was first completed in 1859 the bell could be heard about 10km away nowadays you’d be luck to hear it half a km away across the river because there’s so much noise in London
Love Big Ben, but that's the name of the big bell though, the tower is actually called the Elizabeth tower I think.
@user-ry5fo5nr4d Correct, the Tower is called the Elizabeth Tower but the bell that strikes is Big Ben. It's easier for people to find if you refer to it as Big Ben. Most people don't know the towers name 😊

Yep, there are a number of lights around it to illuminate it. All dotted across the grass. I think some on the building across the road too

@jamesnicholson2503 The crosses? Not sure, an aesthetic choice from the time it was built most likely. Probably Christian crosses as there are some other subtle religious motifs around Parliament. Most of Parliament was rebuilt around 1840. Exceptfor Westminster Hall that was built almost 1000 years ago in 1097

@jamesnicholson2503 Not a tour guide. He is a Parliamentary Steward. So he has a long tailed formal coat, like a wedding coat. He was a lovely chap and showed us the Speakers accommodation afterwards, and the Prime Ministers private entrance to the House of Commons.

How did You do to record it closer?
My son is autistic and obsessed with Big Ben. I asked one of the Parliamentary staff if it would be possible to get closer to the Elizabeth Tower (explaining my sons condition) and they very kindly let us in to the area under the Tower and gave us a brief behind the scenes tour.
If you speak to your MP however they can organise the same, including up inside the tower when they finish the refurbishment work.

@@jamesnicholson2503 The person walking in front of the tower at the start was Parliament security checking on us. The open doorway goes through to the other side and has a corridor that runs under the tower, then dips under the road to the other building.
This whole area generally isn't accessible to the public.
@@TheSouthernPirate So from the other building Westminster bridge side,come back to that corridor,you can walk back through it,and some where by there must be the entrance to the tower? Then you come out right by the front of Big Ben,and speakers green?👍🏴
@jamesnicholson2503 The corridor that runs under the Tower and goes under the road, runs from one end in Parliament (the intersectionbetween the House of Commons & the House of Lords, all the way under the road in to the Government building the other side. There is an entrance/exit which comes out by the Thames near the statue of Boadicea.

@@jamesnicholson2503 See the alcove gap to the left of the tower? Go in there and turn right. The prison cell at the bottom of the tower is there, and so is the entrance to the 334 steps up to the top of the tower.
