It's funny when I planned out my YT channel back in 2009, and with its launch in 2010, that is exactly what I was trying to do, bring very high-quality video and audio to the table. At the time, people weren't really uploading super high-quality retro content, and I wanted to change that. I'm an Audio Engineer by trade, and with my background in radio, music, and performance, I wanted to just have fun with the retro games I grew up with and put a spin on their presentation. I was about to type out a “WTF” comment about some of the missing games, but then I realized that the beauty of the NES was that it has so many incredible games that every list was going to be subjective. This was refreshing to see. It featured a couple games I never tried and others I had long forgotten about. Well done!
I love Maniac Mansion. For the past 10 years or so, I make it a point to play through it once per year around Christmas time to reminisce the good old days of having Christmas vacation and playing it as a kid. It's somehow a Holiday tradition for me. Merry Christmas, Dave!
WHAT AN EXCELLENT LIST! Dude knows his games. I agree plus: Mega man 2, Ninja Gaiden, Metroid, Zelda 1, Bionic Commando, Mario 2, River City Ransom, Faxanadu, and Battle of Olympus. Sometimes I’d play a couple levels of Bubble Bobble too.
Dude river city ransom is the best. Probably my all time favorite game. Way better than double dragon. I think double dragon get so much love is because it had a arcade unit. Also faxanadu is awesome one of my favorites as well.

Billy and Jimmy Lee on the other hand looked like a bunch of badasses and it was easy to immerse myself in the action. My loss. :|

Fantastic list. Born in 80 myself, played almost all of these and I can confirm this is probably the best list for the console that I can get behind that I've seen just about anyone compile. Kudos. If I still managed an arcade I'd offer you a free round.
Double Dragon 2 is in my top 3. I was never able to beat the game. The inside level is ridiculously hard and I never beat it to this day. I still love it.
11 years after the release of this video I am hear to say, I agree with your number 1 pick. I am a 43 year old male and this games holds a special place in my heart. This was the first game I ever beat. I still to this day remember doing it and seeing the helicopter take off. What a game, and great video...it holds up 11 years later

Why is everybody forgetting about Faxanadu? That game had great graphics, sound, atmosphere, was very challenging und just a great fantasy game. I would prefer it even to the first final fantasy or zelda II.
I remember watching the movie called "the wizard" starring Fred Savage from The Wonder years. I remember watching the end of the movie when he found the magic flute on Super Mario Bros 3. I Remember running to my game console and playing that part it was awesome.

I was having flashbacks to where that one car (I think it was the orange one) would all of a sudden gain super speed and just go flying by. You could hear it happening before it went by you. WHY???? I guess it was there to teach me that no matter how good you are at something, there's always somebody out there who's a million times better (credit to Homer Simpson for driving the point home a few years later).

I never really played FF1. I found it too complex for my poor English language skills at the time, and I had the first contact with RPGs as a Dragon Warrior/Quest player. I was most an adventure/action player then (Ninja Gaiden, Megaman, Castlevania, Double Dragon were very popular titles here at the time), not too much of a sports/cars games player. But overall I agree with most. Batman was my first NES game. I loved Contra. Never played Kirby because I was already with SNES at the time I knew of Kirby, they said at the time it was incredible, but unfortunately I didn't have a NESlike system anymore. I loved Faxanadu, Street Fighter 2010, Battle of Olympus and other obscure games

I enjoy this list. It's not just a cookie cutter list that has been recycled a thousand times over. While I enjoyed most of the games on your list, my list is completely different, and that's okay.
I wanted to get on here and personally thank you for your kind comment about my list here. Everybody seems to think that all top NES games lists should be the same. I am simply showcasing my own personal favorites. We all grew up differently, played different games, and gravitated toward different games. Awesome top 20 man! Not everyone talks about maniac mansion.. definitely a gem.. if I didn’t see final fantasy in your top 20 then I couldn’t take this seriously. Punch out should be in everyone’s top 10 easily..the Zelda’s will definitely unfold a gaming path for me that has always satisfied my gaming world. Smash TV was an absolutely epic game also.. would make my top 5

This list has inspired me to record my own. Everyones is going to be different and for different reasons. Age. Access to games. Interest in genres etc.
Faxanadu was GREAT. Maybe unknown by the big public, but beautiful art and gameplay. One weird stuff about it: You could not duck. One cool stuff about it: You actually changed your weapons, armor and helmet, not just in power, cosmetically. Another game of the same kind was Battle of Olympus. Big game, longer than Faxanadu and pretty graphics too., if you were interested.
I second Battle of Olympus. Great game. I also enjoyed Crystalis. Never seem to see that one on these lists either, but I wasted a lot of my childhood playing it. haha.
Much respect to you for this list 💯 personally, I don't see any racing titles making it into my top 20, or top 30 even, but definitely into top 40. This list was solid and honestly a refreshing perspective that differs from the usual suspects of top lists.

I thought the laser gun in Contra was much more useful than the circular fire ball gun. Laser could take out anything requiring multiple hits faster than any other gun, especially the final enemy. The circular fire ball gun thing was annoying. Also, no love for Tecmo Super bowl? Given you don't have a lot of sports games in your list (minus racing games and punch out), I assume you weren't big into them. TSB was the cream of the crop in that genre.
A good choice for #1 but nevertheless... 20-10 What is this? Top 20 obscure NES games??? From 9 to 4 I was like OK but then... HOW THE F*CK did you not have a single Megaman game,a single Ninja Gaiden game or a single Castlevania game!!! BRUH!!!

Dope list. Mine is similar. Top 5 only in no particular order: Contra, Double Dragon 2, Tyson's Punch Out, Legend of Zelda(remember the gold cartridge) and Mario 3.....Double Dragon 2 has to be my all time fav. Fun fact, if you select 2 players where the brothers are able to hit each other, you can still your brothers lives giving you like 6 lifes I believe. Haven't played in years. Enjoy

I know this comment is coming late, but a couple of things... first, nice personal list. It reflects your taste nicely, and that's fun to see. Second, I'm pretty sure the whole microwaving the hamster only working on certain copies thing is a myth. It's not certain copies, but rather only certain characters that will do it. Bernard and Wendy definitely won't, Razor definitely will, and so on. Also, in Punch Out!, it's the Start button to do a star punch.

It was a port from PC, and not a very good one. Still I loved it when I was young even if I had it in French. ("ne passe rien, ne passe rien"). In fact, I bought the new version for PC in Steam and it is harder than the NES version. :)

People have different experiences. Did you ever play Genghis Khan? One of the best games out there and it was on the nes. I'll assume that 80 percent of the people here have never played it. I didn't play MegaMan until much later in life. We just grow up with different experiences.

My all time favourite game was METAL GEAR. No points no bonuses just lots of weapons and equipment you have to find while staying alive to complete the mission. I loved it then and I still do now

I beat Simon's quest as a kid and it's still my proudest accomplishment in gaming history.that game was unbelievable hard

I never really played FF1. I found it too complex for my poor English language skills at the time, and I had the first contact with RPGs as a Dragon Warrior/Quest player. I was most an adventure/action player then (Ninja Gaiden, Megaman, Castlevania, Double Dragon were very popular titles here at the time), not too much of a sports/cars games player. But overall I agree with most. Batman was my first NES game. I loved Contra. Never played Kirby because I was already with SNES at the time I knew of Kirby, they said at the time it was incredible, but unfortunately I didn't have a NESlike system anymore. I loved Faxanadu, Street Fighter 2010, Battle of Olympus and other obscure games
Easily the best list I ever seen because these were games you played as a kid dug the lack of love for Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and Castlevania. Those are emulator kid picks. Your list was all heart.

I enjoy this list. It's not just a cookie cutter list that has been recycled a thousand times over. While I enjoyed most of the games on your list, my list is completely different, and that's okay.
I wanted to get on here and personally thank you for your kind comment about my list here. Everybody seems to think that all top NES games lists should be the same. I am simply showcasing my own personal favorites. We all grew up differently, played different games, and gravitated toward different games. Having a diverse opinion is what makes these lists so awesome! I appreciate you being open minded and accepting of others opinions and tastes. I wish more people in the comment section had your mentality.

Awesome top 20 man! Not everyone talks about maniac mansion.. definitely a gem.. if I didn’t see final fantasy in your top 20 then I couldn’t take this seriously. Punch out should be in everyone’s top 10 easily..the Zelda’s will definitely unfold a gaming path for me that has always satisfied my gaming world. Smash TV was an absolutely epic game also.. would make my top 5

This list has inspired me to record my own. Everyones is going to be different and for different reasons. Age. Access to games. Interest in genres etc.
Only issue with BLASTER MASTER was the respawn of destroyed blocks reappearing after you blasted them.

I like that game but it's never on these lists.
It's in my top 20, love that game. It's one of those under rated games that nobody talks about.
Faxanadu was GREAT. Maybe unknown by the big public, but beautiful art and gameplay. One weird stuff about it: You could not duck. One cool stuff about it: You actually changed your weapons, armor and helmet, not just in power, cosmetically.
Another game of the same kind was Battle of Olympus. Big game, longer than Faxanadu and pretty graphics too., if you were interested.

I second Battle of Olympus. Great game. I also enjoyed Crystalis. Never seem to see that one on these lists either, but I wasted a lot of my childhood playing it. haha.

Much respect to you for this list 💯 personally, I don't see any racing titles making it into my top 20, or top 30 even, but definitely into top 40. This list was solid and honestly a refreshing perspective that differs from the usual suspects of top lists.

I thought the laser gun in Contra was much more useful than the circular fire ball gun. Laser could take out anything requiring multiple hits faster than any other gun, especially the final enemy. The circular fire ball gun thing was annoying.
Also, no love for Tecmo Super bowl? Given you don't have a lot of sports games in your list (minus racing games and punch out), I assume you weren't big into them. TSB was the cream of the crop in that genre.
The laser is the most effective if you're good at aiming.
i like the spreader the best!not as effective as the laser...but covers all areas when shooting enemies.

I really enjoyed this list! I like that you didn't go with the usual crowd pleasers i.e. mega man, castlevania, ninja gaiden, etc... I think I counted 13 games that I have on your list and there's definitely some titles on here I want to pick up
Dope list. Mine is similar. Top 5 only in no particular order: Contra, Double Dragon 2, Tyson's Punch Out, Legend of Zelda(remember the gold cartridge) and Mario 3.....Double Dragon 2 has to be my all time fav. Fun fact, if you select 2 players where the brothers are able to hit each other, you can still your brothers lives giving you like 6 lifes I believe. Haven't played in years. Enjoy

I know this comment is coming late, but a couple of things... first, nice personal list. It reflects your taste nicely, and that's fun to see. Second, I'm pretty sure the whole microwaving the hamster only working on certain copies thing is a myth. It's not certain copies, but rather only certain characters that will do it. Bernard and Wendy definitely won't, Razor definitely will, and so on. Also, in Punch Out!, it's the Start button to do a star punch.
The laser in Contra was great for stationary targets. It felt good to let the bad girl loose knowing that pure destruction was following it.
Microwaving a hamster in a children's game, where you know some kids are going to try and duplicate? Stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Borderline criminal suggestion. I hope whoever programmed that into the game got fired

It was a port from PC, and not a very good one. Still I loved it when I was young even if I had it in French. ("ne passe rien, ne passe rien"). In fact, I bought the new version for PC in Steam and it is harder than the NES version. :)

People have different experiences. Did you ever play Genghis Khan? One of the best games out there and it was on the nes. I'll assume that 80 percent of the people here have never played it. I didn't play MegaMan until much later in life. We just grow up with different experiences.

My all time favourite game was METAL GEAR. No points no bonuses just lots of weapons and equipment you have to find while staying alive to complete the mission. I loved it then and I still do now
