It's absolutely a jewel, this recording. Maestro Mravinsky is a certainly a Legend of Golden Conducting School. Everything of the score is expressed here. Thank you very much for sharing of it.
Well-articulated and at the same time lyrical performance of this Romantic masterpiece with perfectly harmonized sound of all the strings. The awesome conductor leads the excellent orchestra in a precise tempo with perfectly analyzed dynamics. the third movement sounds particularly beautiful. The sound quality is amazingly high as a recording of almost sixty years ago at the time of upload. Everything is excellent!
I have discovered Mravinsky recently and am inclined to think he remains the best Russian conductor.
Absolutely!! His versions of Tchaikovsky 4th, 5th & 6th (London tour, Deutsche Gramophone) are the definitive references of Tchaikovsky's late symphonies
I also recently came to admire him as well as Kondrasin and Rodzhestvensky They have always something special
@@hgolivares Only the 4th was recorded in London, 5&6 were recorded while they were in Vienna.
How marvelous strings! So melancholic, so Russian...
Sublime.
PERFEZIONE!
..greetings from south wales, uk!
i love tchaikovsky.. thankyou for sharing this 🙂 x
Despite the modern trend for players standing up and sometimes not having a conductor, Mravinsky shows why this masterpiece needs a director.
The newer 'trendies' on You Tube do not seem able to reach into the intricate construction and musicality of a slightly earlier time, almost as if the work is a slighter piece than the symphonies. Lighter yes but of less importance NO.
I like the 3rd mvt (L'Elegie) in this rendition. In fact, that is the most requisiete section in this work I think.
CZcams first in classical music
I always prefer to listen youtube.
Are Mravinsky and Kondrashin the only conductors to have incorporated the additional unison C chord at the end of the 1st movement that Tchaikovsky added in his version for piano duet ? It sounds a bit strange but perhaps it's that we aren't used to it. It also helps to explain why they don't observe the (spurious) fermata at the end of m. 270. They both bring out the man in Tchaikovsky. Wonderful musicians.
I noticed this too!
John Stubbs who has produced an edition links this to one of the printed editions. "I am, like most musicians outside of Russia, accustomed to the Kalmus edition, which itself is a copy of the Rahter edition of 1888. My curiosity led me to the IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project) website. I found a copy of the State Music Publishing House edition (Muzgiz) from 1926 which was itself a copy of the original Jurgenson edition. Not surprisingly, the markings from the holograph matched this edition." When entering the score into a computer programme: "To my astonishment, after the final chord I was accustomed to hearing, an extra two bars of pedal C played. I almost jumped out of my chair. I had entered these two bars robotically from the Muzgiz edition. On playback, I heard bars that I never knew existed, having only played from the
Kalmus edition. This became “The Adventure of the Missing Measures.”
Thank you!
