I used to have a 2017 STI, which was great but it never really felt special. My 2019 Type R just has that special factor.. it feels like you own one of those special jdm cars from the 80s/90s but this is new and this is now! Modern classic!

Another great review! Spot on! This car is a modern classic. One youtuber said if you don't love your car, you bought the wrong one. I have a 2019 Type R and LOVE it! I applaud Honda for making it the way it looks. Simply put, if someone doesn't like the way it looks, it was not made for them. The insane mark ups show us they are not having any issues moving these cars. Fortunately I was able to get mine a few months ago at sticker. I had to drive an hour away to get it but I was able to get it at sticker. It was a huge BLESSING! I just went to a local Honda dealer to look for some accessories and they had one 2020 Type R left in the showroom and it was already sold! It went for $10,000 over sticker! Someone bought that Type R for $50,000 and they were happy to do it so I don't think Honda is too bothered about some people who say the car is "ugly". Keep up the great work! I truly believe when everything goes electric and the feel of actually driving a car is killed people will be looking back at cars like the Type R and kicking themselves for not getting one when they had a chance.

I got my 2019 Type R for 40k out the door, came with a couple extras too. They drive like a car that is more expensive.. definetely worth the money. FWD car that handles like a Porsche. Pretty fast too from the factory. So far I only change the steering wheel to a Mugen and got a cat back exhaust. The last thing I may do is a short shifter, then thats it... it really shifts great from the factory almost feels like a gated shifter. I just kind of want it to be even shorter.

from my understanding, honda corp doesn't profit from the dealer mark-ups. Only the dealer does, because dealers buy the cars from the OEM at a relatively fixed price. If anything corp suffers, because it's a fact that many choose not to buy these due to the markup. But it's comforting to know they haven't suffered enough for honda corp to call the type R quits

I fell in love with this car from the first moment it was announced, I remember walking in the dealership and seeing a Championship White Type R behind Velvet ropes... at the time it looked like an Exotic car to me and Honda was treating it like one, they would not even let me sit in the car... I would not end up getting one until 2 years after that (2019) but have been loving it so much. So many track days done, so much spirited backroad driving... really no problems. Only issue i had was the getting the fuel pump recall done and a tire blowout which was my fault... other than that the car is SOLID. It likes to get beaten on, it loves to rev... upgraded my brakes, suspension and went with 18 inch wheels with wide tires. Oh and definitely get an Exhaust.... Milltek is the best in my opinion, but go with whatever you Exhaust like best.

I felt the same way about the looks too. There was a spy shot of one in Europe without the big wing and it had a more subdued smaller wing and that’s when I realized it just doesn’t look right without the big wing. The rest of the aero stuff I really like. Obviously it’s just my opinion but for me I didn’t want a performance car that looked just like every other car out there. Besides most of the aero is functional. The looks make it stand out and I have such an easy time finding my car in a parking lot. Also some people don’t want to be seen in this car but come on, that’s a self image thing imo and they want a BMW or Mercedes to make them look good, imo.
I got over the boy racer looks and the car is rewarding. I have it for a daily driver and I love it. I have 18” for winter with snow tires (Boston area) and when I swapped the 20” inch rims back on it’s like night and day. I drove my 80 year old mom around and the car was so smooth on the highway she had no ideas at one point we were cruising at 100mph, it’s so comfortable at that speed. Plenty of room and a big hatch area for loading stuff.
Don’t know where you are but in Massachusetts when I got mine in Nov. 2019 there was no mark up. Got it at sticker. Some people are getting them below sticker.
But yeah, I agree with you. You need to love it all around. Might not be for you.

Thanks for the review again! I'm on the verge of purchasing one and I've been trying to convince myself to find more reasons not to own one that opposed to owning one. So far I've found more positives that negatives. My motivation to get one is so that I can experience the thrill of driving a manual transmission again, and these types of cars are slowly being phased out of the market. Being one of the last to own one of these would be a delight. On a monetary point of view, these cars hold their value and don't depreciate as well, so in a year or two if I find myself in some financial trouble or if that it's not a long term ownership for me, I can always sell or trade it in without having to take that much of a financial hit. That's a positive.

I drive the 2020 Civic hatch EX-L sonic grey pearl that became the basis for this facelifted type r, and man... Strong foundation of this type r is why i wonder why the continued talk with needing to value Tesla model 3 over the civic, when you have much better value (both now and in future) with the civic, especially in the type r version in terms of package, comfort, features, performance, versatility... everything :)
Got the Civic EX-L only because I didn’t need the performance factor, but if i favored it and wanted manual transmission, Type R would’ve been the car I’m driving now. Still, even in my Civic EX-L, almost everything good about the type r is in the Civic EX-L as well, even without the 2.0 L VTEC Turbo.
There’s no doubt... the best way to describe how good this type r is, is to simply say, this is the integra Type R of today, and it helps that the integra and civic are mechanically related to each other :)

The alcantara wrapped steering wheel is the biggest letdown of the entire Civic Type-R because it's going to get dirty af real quick, and my OCD cannot stand it. If I had a Type-R, that's the first thing I would try to change, swap it out for a new 2019 wheel from the dealership parts counter, or a BuddyClub wheel or something.
Otherwise, I love the Type-R and will strongly consider one when I'm ready.

I'm not sure they didn't plan these updates in advance to keep the car fresh and marketable. They probably could have done these updates years ago. I believe this to be true of almost any car.

Type R is probably the best modern car to learn stick on. The clutch is not heavy but gives lots of feedback. The car auto rev matches your downshifts and the shifter is very easy. The car also has an anti stall feature, it is almost impossible to stall the car.

That grey almost looks like destroyer by Dodge and unfortunately discontinued it this year, but really like the replacement for it and is called smokeshow. It has a vey slight blue hue to it, much like the type R and is also gorgeous paint. However, it's lighter than the Mopar color and isn't as dark as ether one of them. That's a sweet looking car and like it a lot. I've thought about wrapping my challenger srt8 in it and would look so synister

The civic type r destroys the competition over the sti, focus rs, golf r, and veloster. It’s the king at the Nurburgring, and it’s my dream car and my favorite car over all the competition over a mustang or camaro, it has everything I need with the best fuel economy in a sport car.

In Canada they get a blind spot camera in the right hand side mirror.
Not a fan of the Alcantara steering wheel, will get matted down and shiny in no time.

    • @forrestsautoreviewsofficial
      @forrestsautoreviewsofficial  Před 4 lety +2

The Veloster N is a beast and super fun to drive. The biggest difference is comfort and capabilities. The Type R will monster down a curvy road, not beat you up, and maintain a level of composure that will legitimately make you forget its FWD. No understeer, extremely light torque steer, and the ability to lay the power down even mid corner. Drive one and I promise you will be impressed! Not saying you should get one over the other but they each have their pros & cons.
Type R is more expensive, refined, extremely rewarding to drive, and dialed in.
The Veloster N sounds incredible, is more affordable, still very fun to drive, and a little more funky.
