How to drive at 628mph | Top Gear

- Going 1,000mph isn’t easy. But that’s exactly what the Bloodhound project wants to do. In order to do so you need a few things; a rather special car, a Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet and a rocket. Oh, and a rather brave person to sit behind the wheel. So strap your brain in as Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Marriage speaks to Andy Green about what it’s like to do 628mph - and how this car will try and hit 1,000. Be warned: there’s talk of yaw, static roll margins and what it’s like to drift a supersonic car.

" I drive formula 1 cars"
"I use formula 1 engines to power the rocket in my car"
The best thing about that is that they actually dumped the F1 engine idea pretty early due to low torque, and for a long time wanted to use a Jaguar V8 engine to power the pump. And the electric engine option became viable just recently.
@@flashpeter625 The electric engine is a much better idea.
@@flashpeter625 Nothing is more manly than driving something so fast, not even a Formula 1 engine was enough to power it.
"electric engine"
Scotty Boyd Yeah. Sorry about the irregular use but it comes to the same thing. An electric motor will replace the Jaguar petrol engine as the fuel pump for the rocket motor. Much better idea. Much lower risk and, importantly, much faster turnaround.

I like how casually he talks about TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY MILES AN HOUR
250 mph isn't that fast. commerical jet planes fly at around 500mph.
@@iCore7Gaming Nothing gets close to the ground at 500mph. The fastest commercial landing speed is about 250mph. The aerodynamic challenges in going supersonic when while staying on the ground are insane, it is much harder than flying at that speed in open air. Bloodhound is supposed to go 1000mph on the ground, which would by the way also defeat the current record speed of manned flight "at ground level" (held by N104RB Red Baron at 988mph). The airplane flew close to the ground, but high enough that was not bothered by shockwaves reflecting from the ground. Bloodhound will have to deal with it, and was designed to do so. Going 1000mph without leaving the ground is an incredible engineering challenge.
250mph is not fast for anything powered by a Jet or rocket. I'm actually surprised by the acceleration (or lack of). Go to a Drag strip and you'll see both V8 engined and jet engined cars reach go from 0-250mph in around 2.5 seconds.
@@LewisHamiltonMSPR Bloodhound is simply not an acceleration machine, it is a top speed machine. The only acceleration constraint is the length of the rack. Thanks to that, they do not care that much about weight, so Bloodhound weighs 6-8 tons, and a lot more effort went into low drag. Compared to a dragster, Bloodhound looses a lot from the standing start, but then above say 250mph and until about 500mph, Bloodhound's sustained acceleration of about 20mph per second (about 1G) is insane and no dragster could ever keep up with it. Wheel driven dragsters simply do not even have enough power. Jet powered dragsters might have the power, but are very draggy and unstable at these speeds compared to Bloodhound.
@@flashpeter625 That's all correct and I'm aware of that already, though I would argue that between 250 and 330mph, Dragster still have greater acceleration.
They are built to accelerate as quickly as possible, which is why they have so much downforce, plus they are only built to run over a 1000ft run that takes only 3 seconds, so they'd blow up well before reaching their true top speed given a longer track.
Still, given the size and power of the Bloodhound's engines compared to the rest of the vehicle, I still expected more acceleration than that.
Best of luck for 1000mph 😃 make something good come out of 2020
