Seems that my teenage years were well spent up and down the rail network seeing these wonderful locos in action, brings back so many very happy memories Just now it is heart breaking that time has passed and most of these are gone.
It's always a sad sight to see trains going to scrap that had served well for many years. On the other hand, modern Diesels are more environmentally friendly. But modern trains are not always better. In summer, I often prefer a window that I can open. It feels much better than all this airconditioning stuff. Thumb up!
Disappointing, after this decade’s mass scrap-page, there will probably be a genuine shortage of 70’s and 80’s trains. The largest problem is that railways don’t wan’t to electrify meaning no-one wants to preserve electric locos and units.
A lot of the train-coaches visible in the clip were "slam-door" types that would no longer be 'legal' for railway use. They could also have contained asbestos insulation which would have restricted their use on 'preserved' rail lines. There are preserved examples of most of the types shown. The diesel locos shown would have lost their usefulness as many passenger-trains became multiple-units with their own engines, while the movement of freight has gone over to more efficient and more powerful modern loco designs. Others shown, like the line of "Baby Deltic" locos, had design-flaws that made them unreliable and short-lived. There are preserved examples of most of the diesel-locos built in the U.K., with the exception of early 1940s/'50s prototype designs and of some that were unsuccessful (like the handful of "Baby Deltics").
