To all of the haters who say that she shouldn’t be having a camera with her in a hospital due to HIPAA or PIPEDA, if you watch closely you can see that she re-uses B-Roll in many of her videos so that she is never actually filming a patient scenario. This B-Roll is not that hard to film and was probably done in an hour when she had some time before heading up to the on-call room or when she was done her shift and just before she was ready to head home. And frankly, I am happy that there are doctors who want to provide educational resources to not only future healthcare providers, but also potential future patients. To everyone to is saying that she should be studying instead of editing videos...you do know she’s not a machine right. Doctors are not chained to their job and often need other outlets to keep them balanced in such an unbalanced job. Thank you for doing this ViolinMD you are a ray of sunshine and I am proud that we have health care professionals like you in Canada.
It’s not like she is 24 7 working no breaks, I mean come the heck on, without a break or being able to relax for even a minute talking to random strangers online, can make a doctor snap, and people complaining doesn’t help. I can't speak for a doctor but I work at a hospital and some days you're so busy you forget about food, some days you know you haven't had anything and you just cannot stop, and some days all you do is eat 😂
Definitely had my hangry days though. So I'm right there with you with the crying thing
sometimes you just have to. even with me going to class, tutoring, and meetings all morning and afternoon, I may not eat again until 3pm. bring snacks and lots of water!

@@ViolinMD I've been in the ICU 20 times because of brittle asthma and I always find it difficult to watch your Vlogs when you visit there. One thing for sure though, is that watching your Vlogs and finally being able to talk about things on my youtube really does help me with my ptsd a little bit, so thank you ✌💛✌

@cubomania3 More so that there is never a case of " too many " doctors at a facility. So it's common practice for doctors like this to do extended shifts at the hospital, they still get sleep when they can but if things are busy it's necessary to have them as close of proximity as possible.

As someone born with Spina-Bifida and Hydrocephalus I have spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals, including ICU's so it is extremely interesting see these situations from a doctor's perspective.

We spent 4 months with my Mother in Law in the ICU and I remember the doctors doing rounds. So thorough and unbelievably organized in making plans for the day. We went back months later when she was better and thanked the doctors for saving her life. What you do means so much to families. ♥️
7 months ago I almost died from a chainsaw to the neck and face. Spent 5 days in icu. I wasn’t expected to live at all. Thanks to God and people like you and your amazing medical staff I’m still here to talk about it! Thank you!!

I think it's so amazing how you make these videos to show the public what it's really like being a doctor. I think most of us don't realize how hard the profession can be, and we judge too quickly. These videos really spotlight what you all go through as doctors.
My father was in the ICU for less than a day before he passed there, it’s been very hard. I’ve always appreciated doctors/nurses but now I do even more because I know they did everything they could. I appreciate you and all the hard work you do❤️ May god bless my dad’s soul, he is so missed.

While I do not doubt you or your ability to treat your patients, but I would still be nervous to have my doctor on her feet and on call for such a long period of time. In Ireland I think the hours are much more restricted, so doctors can’t work 26 hours at once. You’re a warrior for doing it though.

Sadly here healthcare is very very understaffed and within the next years it’ll become even worse. I definitely agree though, I don’t know how it’s legal.
I’m a med student in Ireland, 24 hour shifts are the longest junior doctors do
Doctors can sleep during those shifts when they have the time. Research has been done and patients are less likely to die when staff doesn't get changed out as often.
I don't know how you can have a smile on your face your job is so demanding. Only you make this job look doable.

Respect to people like you. You spend all our days and labor to help those who need help. You give up vaction time to help others. I just jave to say thank you. I was told one time as an infant i had gone non responsive. Thanks to all the nurses and people im here alive and healthy. People like you even have overnight shifts. I just have to say thank you to all helping others
I remember that my mom almost died from septic shock. She came into hospital feeling weak with a high white blood cell count. They thought it was just the flu but my mom was Back in emerge 10 hours later. It was my birthday and she went into icu. I was the only Kid in a long time let into icu. I was 3. At that point she had been in icu for 2 months. And my birthday was the day where the MIC ( medically induced coma) was lifted and she was no longer intubated. I will forever be grateful to the doctors and nurses who stayed by my moms side in those times where she almost didn’t make it. She was moved into icu because of a code blue shortly after she was consulted and told she needed to stay. This point in the video where the man had septic shock reminded me of it and made me so happy to know how lucky and blessed I am to still have a mother.

I wanted to share my collapsed lung experience :)) so about 6 months ago I was admitted to a near by hospital and was placed in the ICU... my surgeon said that my collapsed lung was the worst he had ever seen!! Mainly I only had symptoms of just extreme chest pain and very short breath. I ended up getting a surgery to basically patch up the hole in my lung and I recovered fine and am doing well!!
I have no plans on being a nurse or doctor when I’m older, but for some reason I can’t stop watching your videos! 💖☺️

I was in respiratory failure after surgery that went wrong...I was in a coma for six days on a vent for 9..thank you for all the hard work you do to save lives like mine..

I use your videos as my ‘reward’ after I’ve completed a secondary essay (which can be quite exhausting because I work 60 hours a week). I’m from Scotland in the UK and here we are very lucky to have the NHS. We are a very fortunate nation to have it, and I appreciate and respect all the NHS staff who work hard to look after us.
Saying that, unfortunately, out of the dozens of doctors and nurses who have “looked after” my dad over the past 3 months, only a very small handful have been genuinely caring and kind to him.
He had bowel cancer and required life changing surgery to save his life. This surgery was to remove the bowel and give him a permanent stoma. The operation was complicated and the recovery is very slow. The operation was three months ago and he still has at least 15 months before he will be fully healed, if not longer. He has been through A LOT since the operation, such as;
He vomited up large amounts of blood which was due the a hole torn in his stomach.
He’s had 3 bouts of sepsis.
He’s had a blood clot in his arm.
He’s been diagnosed with PTSD after vomiting up the blood because he was convinced he would die.
He has infected abscesses inside the wound from the initial operation, the abscesses need a tube attached to them to drain out the poison, he has had this tube attached for a couple of months now. The drain causes him lots of intense pain, and it keeps moving so they keep needing to operate again to move it back to the right place.
The wound is basically a huge hole where his back passage was, the hole is the size of my fist so it’s extremely painful.
He’s been incredibly weak and couldn’t walk as he kept collapsing.
His bladder no longer works so he has a permanent catheter which at one point became blocked causing him intense pain yet NHS 24 refused to send out a doctor (even when they could hear him yelling and howling in pain).
He is waiting for a psychiatrist appointment because, unsurprisingly, he is now seriously depressed.
And now he is back in hospital with more serious pain we believe coming from his kidneys, yet the doctors and nurses who work in his ward are rude, incredibly inpatient and appear to have no compassion or empathy.
Dad is currently knocked out with the amount of pain killers he’s on to finally give him some relief. His nurse just came in with a plate of food and said “do you want this?”
Dad, unable to speak because he’s so doped up on pain killers, shook his head and managed a quiet whisper of “thank you”. The nurse rolled her eyes, scoffed, and stomped out of the room.
They have regularly been getting impatient with him when he’s been crying with the pain, literally shrugging their shoulders, telling him there’s nothing they can do then walking away and leaving him alone for hours.
The doctors then came into his room, looked in his eyes and took a pulse and said, I quote “I don’t know what’s wrong with him”. Then walked out of the room before I had a chance to ask any questions. I assumed he was going to get another doctor but no one came back.
Unfortunately, this has been the experience we have had with almost every medical professional for these three months. He’s been on different wards with multiple different doctors and nurses, but it seems this hospital is full of staff like this.
Of course there have been some doctors and nurses who you can tell genuinely care about their patients and want to help as much as they can, which we have all appreciated so so much.
I wonder if these people were to see THEIR father go through what my dad is going through, would they have the same awful attitude?
This is the fifth time dad has been admitted to hospital since the operation and EVERY time he’s been discharged far too early, and without any type of care plan in place, none of us received any instructions on his care such as how to keep his wound clean, painkillers, how change the dressing properly and empty the drains. Luckily, mum used to be a nurse way back in the day so she was able to figure out how to do it all and is now his full time carer, however, what would’ve happened if mum wasn’t here? Would dad just have been left to it on his own? If he had, I’m 100% certain he’d be dead right now.
We will be putting a formal complaint in. However dad asked us to wait until he’s better, because he’s worried that if we do it while he’s still unwell, that they will treat him even worse than he has already been treated.
I don’t know what to do for the best. I am genuinely worried that if I make a complaint, they will treat him even worse. At the same time, I can’t allow this to go on. I do not have the funds to move him to a private hospital. I’m so shocked that he is being treated this way. He is an old man who is seriously ill and I can’t understand how the people who are meant to be caring for him just don’t seem to have any compassion at all.
It hurts me to hear of your father's situation. My father had colon cancer with surgery that resulted in sepsis and being on life support. I relate to your feeling of helplessness. Much respect for you trying to improve his quality of life. Fill out surveys honestly or call administration or an ombudsman. Prayers for your dad and your family.

I love your purple sneakers! Purple is my favorite color, and last year when I had physical therapy after my stroke, the therapists demanded that I get sneakers instead of the shoes I normally wear. It took me a while to find sneakers that were purple enough!
I always watch these just before I go to bed, radiates positivity and hope and it encourages me to work towards my dreams of becoming a nurse.

I've spent time in the ICU (about a month and a half but I was in a coma for 3 of those weeks) and everyone who worked there was incredible. I appreciated everything the doctors and nurses did for me and my family. Thank you for everything you do for your patients! We appreciate your hard work and dedication ♡

You inspire me to become a doctor. I been a nursing aide for 12 years and I seen everything imaginable. I done finger sticks, treatments, suction tube, pack bed sores, insert cath. I seen everything. My one resident crashed the other night. His pulse oxy was 66. We had the crash cart to put a mask on him. My cousin is a doctor. My aunt is a RN. My grandparents were paramedics. I have never pass meds before but I am fascinated with the human body! I watched every grey anatomy and house.

I just started working in a neuroscience ICU in May and absolutely love it! It can definitely be overwhelming at times but I feel like I form better relationships with the patients (if alert) and their families since the patients are usually there for multiple weeks. Love your videos!

Great video. I was a critical care nurse for many years. My last job was working in Open Heart ICU which I loved. Sometimes went 8 hours before realizing I had no chair at my bedside table. Intensive care is never dull. It's amazing how strong, complex and resilient the human body is. You will be a great doctor.
