- In the film OLD MASTER NO SECRETS painter Philip Akkerman shares the technical knowledge he has acquired over the past forty years. The secret of the Old Masters, as Akkerman reveals in his studio, is that they divided the work in three steps: drawing, grisaille and color. By approaching each step individually, the Old Masters obtained maximum control over the result of the painting. For Akkerman, this technique enables him to paint his self-portraits in any which way that pops up in his mind. OLD MASTER NO SECRETS is a 96 minute slow movie by Dutch filmmaker Maarten de Kroon, inspired and presented by Philip Akkerman.

Tha alchemical process of each artist piece of art is so magical to watch…. I loved how much love and care you gave each piece of art, a way I can relate to, my fellow artist in Germany.. much love and gratitude for sharing your artwork ❤
Thank you for sharing your process. happy accidents to all
Fantastic inspirational and instructive video… Philip Akkerman explains the whole process in a relax and easy manner that it’s more than informative but a meditative approach to the process. Those sound effects are jarring though. 🙏😊
Wat een held ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you.
I have been teaching art and looking at Akkermans work for 15 years. I am a huge fan and love his wonderful combination of traditional grounding and inventive picturemaking. He is so generous and forthcoming. Even priming his panel was a joy. Thank you to everyone for making this. It’s a treasure.
Heel leerzaam .
😂Dank, dank, dank.
Saw the music video for "Philip" by Jameszoo. Beautiful work
Great video! I like Philip and his work. There are some painters that try and get the hue, value and chroma down right first time in one layer of paint - watch vids of Lucian Freud or Morgan Weistling to see this...
😊👍🙏
Wat fantastisch dit!
Een mooie en een interessante film over de kunstenaar Philip Akkerman.
geweldig
Wat een leuke vent ben je!
Een appel voor meester Akkerman.
I had a good chuckle--The voice said--Red Red; then he picks black and says he's not listening to any voice as he's not crazy.🤣
It is surprising how little paint you need using this technique. I enjoyed watching. I am not sure I understood all the ingredients you use when preparing the Masonite board.
In the long run maybe it's a good thing for an artist to be this idiosynchratic and come across as a smidge crazy, overlooking traditional things like composition and other attributes we usually expect in good art and good practice. I have never seen anyone else work in this way. Sometimes an artist can achieve something by throwing out all the rules and just pursuing his own peculiar vision. To say whether any of these paintings are very good I need to see more work. I did enjoy hearing the language, as it reminds me of some of my heroes.
they are very good, he painted more than 5000
@@WOWTODAZ Well as it turns out, quantity is not a good measure of quality in painting. I am thinking of Morris Katz who probably churned out 10,000 two-minute paintings. I am trying to reserve judgment, but so far have not seen much good here.
have you tried using a brush dip at the end of the day? eliminates the need to wash your brushes. can you speak about the interesting music that pops in infrequently? thanks for sharing!
Thanks! The music is by Jameszoo, composition named 'Philip'.
Philip says: Hello Rob, brush dip also works fine. I just wanted to stress that it is important to handle your precious brushes with care.
The music is taken from the track ‘Philip’ by Dutch composer/musician Jameszoo. czcams.com/video/bD4cEk2dSnU/video.html
@@maartendekroon4105 tx!
Can someone tell me who painted the painting of the guy in the yellow hat in the background at 22:23?
Yes Paula, thanks for asking. It's made by Mike van de Pol, a Dutch artist from The Hague, big fan of Vincent van Gogh
@@maartendekroon4105 Thank you so much!
Brad Pitt’s distant artist cousin…
Hello
Schilderkunst prachtig verwoord door een meester.
What is the panel that he paints on called exactly?
Thanks! Philip says: Lion board or Masonite board. An extra compressed hardboard
