In OLD MASTER, NO SECRETS, Painting Philip Akkerman, Dutch artist Philip Akkerman shares the knowledge he has collected over forty years. The great secret of the old masters, as Akkerman shows in his studio, was that they divided the working process into a number of steps. This working process has been followed for years by the artist, who is equally practical and philosophical. It gives him the maximum control and freedom he needs to realize the essence of his painting in all the thousands of self-portraits he made: to paint all of humanity. And Art history. Because, as Akkerman quotes one of his great heroes, the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, the purpose of our existence is to make a self-portrait. OLD MASTER, NO SECRETS, started as a how-to CZcams video, to share his knowledge with the world, is a layered double self-portrait. A film about the artist working on his self-portraits, a masterclass, and in the end, thanks to the direction the artist partly takes over, is, again, a self-portrait. On film.

Fantastic inspirational and instructive video… Philip Akkerman explains the whole process in a relax and easy manner that it’s more than informative but a meditative approach to the process. Those sound effects are jarring though. 🙏😊

In the long run maybe it's a good thing for an artist to be this idiosynchratic and come across as a smidge crazy, overlooking traditional things like composition and other attributes we usually expect in good art and good practice. I have never seen anyone else work in this way. Sometimes an artist can achieve something by throwing out all the rules and just pursuing his own peculiar vision. To say whether any of these paintings are very good I need to see more work. I did enjoy hearing the language, as it reminds me of some of my heroes.

@@WOWTODAZ Well as it turns out, quantity is not a good measure of quality in painting. I am thinking of Morris Katz who probably churned out 10,000 two-minute paintings. I am trying to reserve judgment, but so far have not seen much good here.

Zeer interessant waar ik als jonge schilder iets aan heb! Op de kunstacademie heb ik geen enkel schilderambacht of techniek geleerd maar ik schilder wel realistisch wat ik dus zelf aan het uitzoeken ben. Ik vraag me af of en wat de verschillen zouden zijn met doek en canvas.
Er is nauwelijks verschil, weet ik uit ervaring. Doek heeft iets meer structuur. Maar zelfs dat kun je wegwerken als je wilt, met lagen, of gesso.
I have been teaching art and looking at Akkermans work for 15 years. I am a huge fan and love his wonderful combination of traditional grounding and inventive picturemaking. He is so generous and forthcoming. Even priming his panel was a joy. Thank you to everyone for making this. It’s a treasure.
