  • BROOKS HYPERION MAX 2 - First Impressions (WOW) - welcome back to another video and today I am giving you my first impressions of the Brooks Hyperion Max 2! I have been waiting so long to test this, so I am really grateful to finally have the shoe in hand to test out... and oh boy, what a change! This thing has gone through some serious plastic surgery and come out the other side as a totally different shoe...
    What are your thoughts on the Brooks Hyperion Max 2?

    I only started running in the Hyperion Max 1 a month ago. I saw it for $72 so how could I resist. Plus I was told if your a forefoot striker, this shoe is definately for you. They weren't kid'n. That very pronounced late stage rocker gives me better foward momentum and gets my legs turning over faster than any shoe I've ever tried. Plus I like a firm midsole that's still protective with some ground feel. I tried out the Hyperion Max 2 and Hyperion 2 the other day at a running store. I might have to eat my words when I commented the other day the H2 is the successor to the HM1. You definitely still have that same type of rocker in the Max 2 but for me it was alot less apparent in the Hyperion 2. That prominent forefoot rocker in the HM1 is what makes that shoe special and what separates it from the H2 imo. Perhaps a midfoot or heel striker might benefit differently where the appex of the rocker feels to me that its positioned in a different spot. Or perhaps its so slight, I didn't feel it. You can get the HM1 below $100 right now. At that price why worry about a suitable replacement. The comfort level in the HM2 is top shelf and the rocker still hits that sweet spot for me. The Boston 12 fits that nitch for me now. But just like the HM1, the HM2 will be very tempting to buy once the price goes down.

    I tried the Hyperion 2 recently. It IS the successor to the Hyperion Max. It is about 5-10% softer and much snappier. It uses DNA Flash 2. For $140, it would be my top 5 running shoes of the year. It will be a great all arounder from easy miles to long runs and some tempo sessions in there. Still very light. If you want more stability, get the Hyperion 2 GTS.

    Appreciate the review. I did my first run on the SL 2 and love it, shame the shape doesn't work for you. As a runner who loves the original Hyperion Max like you, not sure what I am going to do with those. I may end up with the new hyperion 2 at some point as the price tag and changes to the max 2 have me shying away from it

  • @shanedorrian8192
    @shanedorrian8192 Před 25 dny

    Was interested what you’d think of these Andy, with the addition of a plate. Of course last year Brooks did say they were going to move the Hyperion line in 2 different directions, the Hyperion 2 was going to be like the Max V1 and the OG Hyperion Tempo and the Max 2 was gonna be a brand new shoe not really similar to the Max V1 at all. If the Hyperion 2 can take the best points from the Max V1 and Hyperion Tempo then hopefully it should be a great all rounder for speedwork while the Max 2 will work better for those longer Efforts but still at a good effort. Great video all round as usual

  • @justanoldfashionedrunner605

    your opinion gets support on a bunch of other channels, where the hyperion 2 is called the true follow up shoe to the hyerion max og. I got the hyperion tempo and the hyperion max and prefer the tempo any day..........i guess i will put the hyerion 2 on my wish list and will sit on the fence regarding the max 2...........Brooks has been on the conservative side in the shoe market for more than a decade, but in my heart there is a soft spot for Brooks. My lifetime marathon pb is run in a Brooks shoe, and i also own a limited edition Cascadia /Scott Jurek shoe, where parts of the shoe is made out of recycled parts of the hoes Scott Jurek ran in on his AT FKT many years back

    I agree. When I saw the specs of this one, I immediately thought that the true successor of the "Max" was going to be the "Hyperion 2". Not sure if I will grab a pair though...these models are always too expensive in the EU :|

  • @robin29991
    @robin29991 Před 26 dny +1

    In terms of branding this new model makes sense. There was nothing 'Max' about the original, and was really similar to the regular Hyperion.
    But if you're a fan of the v1 and expecting a new version, this might be a bit of a shock...

    @nathanbrooks148 Před 26 dny +2

    So they made the Max “Max” second time around when the main complaint of the first was that it wasn’t 😂 looks like they are building a rotation within the line which isn’t a bad thing . May get later in the year when I need a new / steady session shoe

    Still locking myself in to the Superblast V2 due to release in my country on July 19th, as my long run shoe with goal MP injections, so I can extend the life of my 2 pairs of NB V3 and various pairs of Tempo Next%s. I missed out on the Superblast V1. And while my use of Brooks shoes has been limited to the Ghost 12 a few years ago (ran my 1st marathon on them!), if I wasn't locked into Chicago '24 and "hopefully" Boston '25, I'd consider giving this a try. Probably similar to how I used my Nimbus 25 and Invincible V2. But based on your comments, this shoe would seem to slot into pure long run only. Curious to see how your impressions continue in the Max 2 over time.

    I took my new Hyperion 2's out for first run yesterday and They're awesome. They feel a bit softer and have a bit more bounce than the OG max did in my opinion however definitely similar. I personally love them and I am looking forward to next run in them.

      @jefreywith1f924 Před 25 dny

      Did you feel that prominent forefoot rocker in the Hyperion 2 as is the case in the Hyperion Max 1? I ran in the H2 the other day in a running store and as a forefoot striker, I did not feel that aggressive forefoot rocker that's in the Max1 that effortlessly rolls you quickly foward. However, I did feel it in the Hyperion Max 2 when I tested them out.

    • @gjoneshb7
      @gjoneshb7 Před 21 dnem +1

      @jefreywith1f924 definitely not as prominent as it is in the The hyperion Max. That had of the more noticeable rockers I have experienced whereas with the hyperion 2 it feels more traditional from that standpoint. For me it's like a cross between the hyperion tempo and the original hyperion Max.

    • @conorkinsella5328

    I did like Brooks, then moved to Asics NovaBlast, but do love me some Hoka Mach 6 now. How do you think they compare?

    • @levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183
      @levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183 Před 16 dny

      The NovaBlast is softer and bouncier as well as lighter, but I didn’t have much luck in them. I’m very light (102 lbs) and petite and they felt clumsy with all that midsole sticking out in back. I personally find the upper on the Hyp Max2 to be incredibly supportive and comfortable and it runs nimble and lighter than its weight. I also have the Mach 6 and love it. I’m debating as to whether to get a replacement pair of them (they’re quite high in mileage now) or just use the Brooks. Probably both!

  • @kuriosites
    @kuriosites Před 25 dny

    Are you able to draw any conclusions about the DNA Flash v2 vs. DNA Flash v1? I'll be keeping an eye out for your thoughts on the Hyperion 2. As a much lighter runner, I think the Max 2 is too much shoe for me.
    Also, I'm trying some of your fit suggestions for the SL2 on the Mach 6, which I have fit issues with. Ironically, the SL2, for me, had some of the best step-in comfort of any shoe I've tried. Thanks for the review.

      After more runs, they’ve definitely bedded in… in terms of squish/firmness, it feels similar… but the added plate makes it feel more “rigid”…

  • @edrios3668
    @edrios3668 Před 25 dny

    Hey nice review, what is your reason for avoiding plated shoes for long run Marathon training. Is it to do with the firmness of the shoe?

    • @TheFODRunner
      @TheFODRunner  Před 21 dnem +1

      Thanks! Plated shoes take away our natural running biomechanics…. Some more so than others…, if you think about it, when we naturally run, we land on the outside of our feet, roll through and use our big toes as the main push off point… well that’s taken away with a plate as it springs us forward. For a lot of people, too much use causes calf / Achilles injuries… including me! So I limit my usage

    • @levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183
      @levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183 Před 16 dny

      @edrios3668 This shoe-like the Endorphin Speed-does have a nylon or PEBA plate, so while it’s not carbon-plated, it is quite stiff. The plate probably serves mainly to stabilize the midsole. But other than race day, I reserve carbon plates for my marathons. And in the case of short races, I use the Takumi Sen, which have those nylon rods.

    The original max is such a marmite shoe for me, feels nothing special when I run in it but at the end of the run the paces are always good compared to the exertion level. Will be interested to see you compare these to the original and perhaps some other shoes as well.

  • @michaelgriffiths305
    @michaelgriffiths305 Před 26 dny

    It’s not a direct like for like comparison but this theme is very similar to what Saucony have just done with the Ride 17/Triumph 22. The Triumph like the Hyperion Max was very loved and versatile yet shoe yet Saucony clearly intentionally beefed it up with weight gain to ensure the versatility was firmly shelved. It is intentional. The brand then adjusted the Ride 17 to be closer to the old triumph with more stack. Essentially it’s a move to establish lines within a brand. If the Hyperion 2 can do as good a job as the old Hyperion Max - happy? Part of me thinks we may need to wait for the Hyperion 3 iteration and Ride 18 to see the very things really enjoyed in the Hyperion Max and Triumph 21 accentuated again. However, we may not see them exactly again!
    Interestingly Saucony have stuck with an 8mm drop in the Ride 17 instead of deviating to copy the Triumph 20/21 that had 10mm. Personally, daily shoes that utilise greater heel stack to tip you forwards I’m not as much a fan of as a rocker with an 8-6mm, which still can require greater calf engagement on the running stride. I really like the Triumph 20’s I still use but I notice the foam mass in the heel sometimes. Feels slightly unnatural… but it’s a great shoe and that may just be me?!
