- Escaping the street violence of Newark, New Jersey and his oppressive religious upbringing, Hassan Manning moves to LA hopeful to become an actor. Just as his dream of acting begins to become a reality, he is pulled back to Newark by his mother’s passing and the difficult task of taking care of his 3 younger siblings. At his most difficult moment he meets SGI Buddhism and transforms his family, his acting career, and the challenging yet beautiful city that he loves.
This series follow members of the Buddhist organization, SGI-USA, as they share their real life stories of practicing Buddhism in America.

Glad to see many people becoming Buddhist. No matter what sect of Buddhism, the teachings are the same, compassion to all sentient heings. Even an insect, do not kill.Treat others as you will treat yourself.
I am a Singaporean chinese Buddhist. I pray to Buddha Averlokitesvara and Guatama Buddha. Every morning, I place a cup of pure water for each Buddha and then chant Buddhist mantras and impart merits. This has helped to free me from the disturbances by spirits.
Buddhist mantras liberate trapped spirits. So chanting and pray to Buddhas to help these suffering spirits is a way to accumulate merits.

The chant he spoke of from his friend, is the same chant, of which my family practices. I mean, my religion ain't direct Buddhism, but that chant is a huge aspect in our lives. It not only helps us redeem negative spirits but gives us the courage and confidence we need to continue to thrive. Our religion is called "Tenshō-Kōtai-Jingū-Kyō", a sect of Buddhism that focuses on purifying the soul and cleansing the heart.
