@@reanimationeas342 yeah, within a fraction of a second, many kilometers of the Earth (And possibly the entire planet itself) would be essentially erased, so unless you have a bunker a hundred kilometers underground, you're dead. And the worst part about gamma ray bursts is that there is basically no way to detect them since they move at light speed. The only warning you'd get is a light flickering in the sky for a few seconds (The supernova), then sudden death will occur.
For comparison, Betelgeuse is expected to last up to another 100,000 years before going supernova. NASA would have to only notice this star once it has finished burning iron and started collapsing. Even though the collapse can reach a quarter of the speed of light, stars large enough to create such an event can be up to 6 light hours across, extending the collapse time to multiple days. We've never observed a supernova yet, but we'll know it when we see it. Even several thousand light years away the event would outshine a full supermoon. And that's without copping a direct hit from the GRB
