@@Julio.H.P. Everyone forgets Fenwick fouls on Maradona in the first half . Especially the one in 40th minute . This is for direct exclusion . According to the rulles a foul on 9th minute of the first half is also a red card ( start wit both feet , Batista from Uruguay received red card in the first minute of the game agaist Scotland for a similar offense ) . Not to mention all the other savage fouls on Maradona on that championship , as well as the one in Spain 1982.( Gentile -23 fouls on Maradona for just one yellow card ) or in Italy 1990. ( Cameroon ) . One more thing , in the semifinal against Belgium , Valdano scored a goal with his stomach in the 7th minute , the referee annulled him for allegedly playing with his hand . I think it makes sense for someone like Lineker (as someone else said this is from 2014), who was intimately involved in that moment and doesn't use the hand of god to take away from Maradona's legacy. There's a certain segment of more conservative leaning british press that is absolutely obnoxious and would have you think that's the only goal he ever scored. I'm American, and I think though most things are framed from the perspective of English language media, our view on playing to win is far more similar to the South American style than the European one. Says more about England being sore losers than it does about Maradona.

The generations after 70s and 80s cannot appreciate what talent he was, what he had to overcome on the pitch and how skilful he was with the ball. He call it the hand of god but it was like god playing not a player, people followed every move he was making in expectation of something magical and in many cases he produced magic on field. When he pass away, at the moment I heard on the TV the world just froze, suddenly everything disappeared around just the thought that was so unbelievable so crushing. Felt like someone very close to me was gone and I cried. That was Maradona’s effect on fans. He is one of the greatest of all time , I don’t wanna argue who’ s better obviously there are a few player that could be put in this category but for me personally he has no compare, his skills and iron will to win at all cost makes him the top for me. I am ok with the hand of God. We have seen similar occasions every now and then as well. Henry sticking it with the hand, Juventus getting penalties out of no where, even now with VAR they somehow still get it wrong. AND, on very important matches as well. BUT, as far as this game goes, I am ok with it..just because the next Maradona goal counted for 2 anyway :) Or maybe 3...Gary is not shy of his awe towards Maradona and I admire that to a man, acknowledging the genius that Diego was. By FAR the No1, for me sharing the spot only with phenomenon Ronaldo. I remember when I saw Ronaldo first time and I had seen Maradona on his prime live as well and I was:" Holy shit..here is the new Maradona finally!!!"...

Diego Maradona, how you amazed and entertained 100's of millions perhaps even a Billion around the world. I only played football because you made me love the sport, and as a result I have enjoyed many years and made many life long friends, at times in life when I felt lost it was football that helped, my team mates I spoke to and team mates I helped in there time of need. I have medals and trophies and many happy memories, friends and old rivals who I sometimes see in traffic, a restaurant or super market, all because I saw Diego Maradona work magic with his feet, Argentina became my second team at every world cup and Napoli my second club. Through it all we see you still smile in this video, your tired legs once took you to highest greatest feats, then struggled to keep you steady on your feet, it saddens me that such a man died alone in his room when he influenced millions to enjoy being with so many others together on a football pitch. As a man I understand life gets tough and you get beat, so I never judged you in life's defeats, I hoped you would one day find in peace and grace us once again and give us another chapter, but no matter you gave us enough magic to last forever......Thank you Diego.

Regarding the hand of God goal, from when Diego passed the ball which was back passed by Terry Fenwick, Diego magically anticipated where the ball would end up, he made 15 yards, while all other players were ball watching, for a 5'5 player he scored a lot of goals with his head, but how on earth did he manage to get his head anywhere near a 6'2 Shilton with his arms up, ok, he added the last inch or two with his hand, but it was another piece of genius to be in that position regardless.

I think the biggest compliment you can pay Maradona is who were the other players in the teams he played with?
Mostly people won't know because with respect to those players he massively outshone them. Think of all the other greats who have played and you will definitely be able to name players that were world class around them that helped give those players the space to play. He did it for club and Country. He did it on the biggest stage. He was simply in his time in a league all on his own. I will never forget his performance in the 86 world Cup he literally blew away team after team and scored the greatest individual goal in a world Cup. Messi is the closest to him technically but he never achieved the international success Maradona achieved.
