  • Retirement is not just about financial security; it's about finding purpose and fulfillment. As we approach this significant phase, it's crucial to consider the potential regrets that could hinder your retirement. In this article, I explore five common pitfalls retirees often regret and how you can avoid them to ensure a more enriching retirement experience.
Living Authentically: Bronnie Ware’s research revealed a prevailing regret among those nearing the end of their lives-not living true to themselves. Many individuals sacrifice their dreams and aspirations to meet societal or familial expectations. Are your choices aligned with your genuine desires or shaped by external pressures? Making decisions that resonate with your authentic self will provide you with more fulfillment than doing what you “should.”
Balancing Work and Life: While diligence in one's career is commendable, overcommitment to work at the expense of personal well-being and relationships can lead to regret. It’s important to remember that life is not just about climbing the corporate ladder; it's about savoring joys and nurturing meaningful relationships. Strike a balance between work and leisure to cultivate a more gratifying retirement.
Expressing Emotions: Bronnie Ware observed that many individuals regret not expressing their feelings authentically. By stifling emotions, they forfeit opportunities for growth and genuine connection. Embrace vulnerability and communicate openly with loved ones to foster deeper bonds and cultivate emotional well-being with authentic relationships.
Nurturing Friendships: The adage "old friends are gold" holds true, especially in retirement. Yet it's easy to let cherished friendships slip amidst life's demands. Invest time and effort in maintaining your connections. A vibrant social circle will enhance your retirement journey with shared experiences and mutual support.
Choosing Happiness: Happiness is a choice-a realization that often dawns late in life for many. Don't wait until your last few years to embrace a mindset of gratitude and contentment. Despite life's challenges, strive to find joy in the present moment. By consciously choosing happiness, you unlock the full potential of life’s gifts, enjoying the fulfillment of a life well-lived.
Retirement is not merely a financial milestone; it's an opportunity to craft a life of purpose, fulfillment, and joy. By learning from the lessons of those who have gone before us, we can navigate retirement with clarity and intentionality, minimizing regrets along the way.

I want to add to #3 “I wish I had the courage to express my feelings” - We need to reflect on the kindness we received that we hadn’t thank the givers, and the wrongs we’ve done to ppl whom we hadn’t apologized to. Then, seek out these ppl to thank them or apologize to them. Moreover, don’t be shy about telling your loved ones u love them!!

This is why I told my husband I wanted him to retire sooner rather than later. My mother passed in November and he's the only family I have beyond our grown children. We can swing the financial part so now he can do lots of things he wants to do.

I've had so many co-workers who died soon after they retire. As soon as I retired I realized how I have more time taking care of myself than before and by start cooking my own food consistently than eating outside during work time. Even having the time to brush my teeth after morning coffee to eliminate the stains and stop depending on dentist cleaning which save costs, tooth enamel, and stain resistance. I also learned why we tend to lose our teeth as we get older, going to dental cleaning twice a year or so is the worst thing you can do to your teeth, just learn to how to clean your teeth (watch Dr. Ellie) and you can save your gum n teeth before too late. Your gum n teeth directly impact your health and organs if you don't know how to take care. I know I sound off subject here but it's all about health. Eating right and taking care your teeth and gum will save you so many things at later years when you retire. What's the point of retiring and going to doctors every month for medication check up... Health is wealth.

Hi James, I am an avid listener of your podcast/videos and have learnt so much. I have a question that I do not think has been addressed anywhere. In my brokerage account, I have an option of selecting my COST BASIS method. I can elect for one of 5 or more methods listed and I have no idea what would be the best! How would I determine the best method? What method do you use for your clients?

I don’t want to live like a pauper in retirement. I want to go to a restaurant with my wife and not worry about eating around 4 so we can get a free appetizer to split with our split meal.
That scares me enough to keep working. Now if Tesla goes 10x from here then I’ll be ok.

    Question:
    > Regarding minor children (dependent) social security benefits.
    * I’m approaching to retire but I will have two kids who are under 18 when I retire, however, my wife is so young (she will be only 45 when I will retire) the question is can our minor kids are going to be eligible to get the dependent benefits or is my wife’s income, most probably will be close to 100K, is going to make them ineligible?
    Thanks

I certainly have 11 minutes to pay attention to anything James has to say. If he put out a 40 hr video I'd watch every minute. Your equation may be different than mine as an 11 minute recipe for a better next 45 years is definitely a good trade. Rest assured if I had 11 minutes left to live I wouldn't spend it scrolling CZcams!

The biggest regret people will have at the end of retirement is if they pass and Jesus says “I do not know you.”

He is referring to Matthew 7. Of course Jesus knows and unconditionally loves all peoples. But not all people love God, not all people are followers of Jesus Christ. Knowing Jesus is not enough, you have to declare Him Lord, believe His resurrection/ascension and put His Word into practice. Christians are saved not by good works, but by FAITH and good works.

James - you are part of the "Die with Zero" crowd in the personal finance advisor market. I'm so tired of hearing you tell people not to work hard, focus on their feelings, and happiness blah blah blah....i watch and like your videos to recharge my motivation to do mostly the exact opposite of what you coach people to do taking the easy path for most financial decisions....
