When my Mother turned 88 y/o I decided working long hours to accumulate money wasn’t worth the time i could spend with her. I work part time now and spend more time with her. She won’t be here for to much longer so that’s the most important thing in my life!! I mow her lawn now while she makes me lunch. It’s like I’m 16 y/o all over. She loves having me around ❤️
IMHO, age 78 retired twenty years the number one priority is health, that means a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. If you don’t have your health you won’t be able to do the things that you enjoy and you will become a burden to others.
When you are working you are probably stressed, eating on the run, fast food and comfort food and too tired to exercise hard. Job one when you retire, or aproach retirement, should be to get back to where you should be healthwise and to develop a good lifestyle that you enjoy.
It’s Difficult if not impossible to “plan” your retirement when your money isn’t sound.
Sleep on time. Get a full 7-8 hours of sleep every day. You are generally happy when you are not tired.
Nice info. It’s rare but I was able to retire from a corporate career at 55. I would stress the exercise part is MOST important. Walking 2 miles a day now vs being chained to a desk.
I ignored my financial advisor a long time ago because the person ultimately responsible for retirement was myself. If I'm the person who is going to be responsible than why would I give up authority. Best decision I ever made,62 been retired 3 years.
Health is the #1 priority - no amount of money will take away terrible health.
Most healthy activities cost zero dollars or a very minimum amount.
52 traveling. We sold everything. Slow travel the world for a few years and decide where we want to stay.

Back when Apple was $25 a share i was lucky enough to have a pile of cash from selling some property and wanted to buy $100,000 worth of Apple. My financial advisor talked me out of it. Oh well😂
After my Grey Divorce, Financial Planners told me that there was no way I could retire until I was in my 70's. However, I saw older women grow bitter because they had missed their chance for fun or had died. I had experienced enough loss. It was worth the roll of the dice to find a way to plan joy and investing both with not so much money. There had to be a way. Great honest video

Dave...great video! #5 is soooo true. I'm finally beginning to enjoy my life. My advice...enjoy your life while you're working. Yes, much of it is really a choice.

Real good advice . I’m 76 , could have retired sooner than at 68 but my job was very entertaining, specially working with young people- they have a lot of courage and audacity. Now I’ve been retired and I keep myself entertained with outdoor work on land I have. Here’s the thing : my wife is 67 and a very successful entrepreneur, lots of pots on the stove , plus multitasking. She should follow your advice, but I prefer that she keep her mind busy on her things longer because I know that living with her bored is not easy. Time is precious, more so if one lives with peace, tranquility, calm and clarity. Health issue always show up , but one has to be positive and take care of one self.
Some colleges offer woodworking classes, once you enrolled, you have access to the woodworking workshop.
I’m 53 and I feel so blessed to have the insight not to have any of those regrets.

How do you get the planning software?? Would love to be able to play around with the numbers….and not depend on our investor to make the changes. Any planning software you would recommend that we can get our hands on?
A few people I know continued to work well into their 60’s and early 70’s because they loved their job.

I did what I wanted to as far as profession. I did a great deal of international travel. I am now a part time consultant. I want to connect to my children and grandchildren. I want to do something great before I die. I believe that I am going to achieve my goal.
All of this is true!Im 73 all this is true just now realize ! Tell my daughter try to let her know that I’m not trying to tell her I know because I have been there!Agree about Fanincal advisor ! Lot of bad mistakes and loss and IRS problems ! Ended up paying taxes on money I didn’t even make!If mistakes are not fixed you pay the price.IRS is relentless!

I’m 62 and want to retire in 6 months. I have a 30K annuity, plus a 401k depleted to 150K of money that I’m not sure what I can do with at this point.
Don’t wait until you’re too old to spend your money.

Actually this is an exceptionally insightful and helpful video.
Good morning, I am not a retired person, but I do have a different look about when we should retire. I work with many millennials that fall under the old pension plans and have a substantial amount of money inin their 401(k). If we were advised when we were younger Not to invest in our 401(k)s, but into taxable brokerage accounts we could retire now, and enjoy life. With the restrictions on retirement account withdrawals, we will now end up like our parents waiting until the last years of our life. I understand. That is the way which they were taught, but it’s time to teach their grandchildren the right way.

Hindsight is 20/20.
Hard to justify not working as long as you can unless you have already saved several million.
There are no regrets if you're living the life you want.
People I saw all around me said they worked as long as they could then fell ill or infirm and never got to enjoy retirement, I said no way so I saved for 30 years (blue collar worker), bought and sold real estate single family, multi family and vacation houses, got a sweet buyout when interest rates were low so our buyout was high plus medical coverage til 65 Medicare. Retired at 53 years young, now 58 own a ranch, travel the country during the winter plus weekend trips in the summer. Look forward to building a house on some land I own, life is good.

PS: I hesitated leaving the Marines after 37 years…believe it or not, I was nervous about working in the civilian world for a few years.

I don't see the attraction to retiring. Its like putting yourself out to pasture and out of the game. You lose importance.

Great video, thank you. I disagree strongly with the perspective that destination is not important. The destination is everything without which the ride is meaningless in every sense of the way. My advice, look for evidence for the life beyond, and follow it. Be true to yourself. For me, it is God reaching out and saving his creation through Jesus. Keep searching. Your X number of years on earth is completely meaningless if it ends abruptly at death. It is not so.
