I started fermenting weeds I pull into my small garden, all weeds stuffed to the top of a five-gallon bucket, and add water. Two weeks is enough but a month is best. It stinks as bad as manure but it hasn't through a cow and all the nutrients are still left. I water mixed with water barefoot as if you get it in your clothes it STAYS. Glad I found your channel.
Another excellent video, thanks guys! That is a great tip about leaving a few onions in the ground so they will flower the next year, I will have to try that this year. Celery is definitely a toughie, so congrats on your success with that!

Yer vids also bring back fond memories of Sacred Goulais River, my ole "stomppin Grounds" as a Youngster and often skiing on/at Buttermilk Hill...Maw n Paw had a farm up on The hill just N/E of The ski resort... and Grampa had a farm down off of 552, where They worked The Land with horses up until 1967, Then He finally bought a Tractor... wood burning cook-stove (also heated The house in winter) with hot water reservoir included, an out house of course Ha Ha and natural root cellar outside under a big mound with wooden doors built into The side and a dirt stairs leeding down under into,it... constant cool Temp year round... i remember goin To General Store, visiting folks Thru-out The areas country side n Takin Gramma To church on Sundays with Two Horses n wagon... i remember Black Bears feeding on The choke cherry bushes Thru-out The property and The bears even lookin in The windows of The Farm House from time To Time... Thanks for The memories and Thanks a "billions and billions" Ha Ha for sharing Y'alls Master-full Homesteading expertise with Us all !
I feel ya on the short growing season. I am in NW Montana and we have 106 days even tho I am two zones higher than you at 5b. I think it's important that new growers understand there's difference in hardiness zones and first and last frost dates. We are fortunate tho that we have very long days in the summer, sun goes down about 930- 10 pm so we have lots of long day varieties to grow. Super glad I found your channel!
Yes, it's much the same here. Very long days in the summer, so it kinda makes up for our shorter growing season in a way. Thanks for joining us, glad to have ya!

Very informative. We are in the same zone as you guys. When do you start tomatoes? Do you start your cucumbers, beans or peas indoors or directly into ground even though it’s so cold until June most years. We have so many green tomatoes every year so hoping to get better at this cold climate gardening. Awesome video! Thanks so much!
We start our tomatoes late march and early april. They tend to grow a lot quicker than peppers once they've popped their heads out of the soil. Cucumbers and beans we start inside a couple of weeks before we expect to plant them outside. We'll also direct sow some of those two into various spots here once the soil warms up. Helps to extend the harvest on both of those with some succession planting. Peas go straight into the ground. Hope that helps!
Dave and Amanda, Great Video and Great Tips. I have seen some natural replanting of my asparagus, however I think I like your method better, groaning family means more asparagus. Question, how have you seen or prevented cross pollination with pepper and saving their seeds?
We try to keep some separation between the varieties of our sweet peppers. The hots are all crammed into the hoophouse, in separate blocks. We haven't seen much in the way of cross pollination with any of them, maybe we are just lucky with that aspect, not sure. The varieties are consistent from year to year with our saved seed though.
We usually allow a couple of plants to grow per cell. 1 seed does give you an individual stalk, with many ribs. when we harvest in the summer, we are only harvesting the outer ribs from each individual stalk, then chopping and freezing the celery as the season goes on. Towards the end of the season we'll start harvesting full stalks once the weather starts to cool down and growth slows down. We usually put away 6-8lbs of chopped frozen celery to use all year long. Hope that helps!

Peppers are being sow this week end. All the onions and leeks were done last week and are beginning to pop up! I'll do celery too I think.
