I have the Molly Tuttle signature, Preston, Thompson, sinker, mahogany guitar. I was led to believe that a lot of the sinker material not only has a higher mineral content due to having been at the bottom of a river for some decades, but also a lot of the wood that fell off the barges was from an era where the wood itself was old growth mahogany. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the allure of sinker mahogany has to do with the fact that the wood was old versus new growth. Let me know if that’s true.

What a gorgeous tone! I have a Country Boy. It's twenty years old now. It's my favorite guitar. It stands up well to my HD28.

This is a beautiful instrument, but let's be honest, the best part of the video was the 'secret stache' pun😂

My old growth beard has many trapped minerals from the soup I’ve been eating over the years, making me more handsome as I age and more articulate and refined.

I remember this one. Aside from the sinker, that top is a meticulously decided-upon winner found after some rummaging in the stack.
I'm glad you guys landed it.

At a certain point, it becomes difficult to hear tonal differences in higher-end instruments when compared to other higher-end instruments. Yes, I can hear the differences. Yes, I would be willing to pay for upper-end quality. At this level/price-point, aficionados look for the articulation of chordal voicings, and sustain without becoming "muddy". String "pop" (responsiveness) and tone round out some of the ideals sought. I have had the good fortune of playing exceptional instruments that meet some of these ideals.
For those chasing tone, just find a guitar that you love playing with a tone that you like. When I was chasing tone, I made myself miserable. When I purchased based on enjoying the instrument, I enjoyed the instrument and playing it. Remember, we play to make music, not to chase gear endlessly. Play for yourself and the enjoyment of others not for the gear. Only freaks who dive into this topic will hear those subtle differences. People enjoying your music might not pick out those distinctions. Some of our influences played inexpensive, flawed instruments and they produced extraordinary music. That's what playing is all about.
All that said, I love these videos. I can't always get to retail instrument shops to hear finer instruments; this is a big help in learning more about these subtler distinctions.
Thank you to the Acoustic Shoppe folks who put these high-production value videos together. Nicely done.

I play 35 years and own a half dozen high quality instruments 50-100 years old worth $5000- $8000 , but my 2nd favorite for tone and most played instrument is a newer $600 12string with back and sides made from some kind of hi tech plastic

Thanks for that post! seems like you’ve come out the other side of the hunt wiser and happier. I am at the beginning stages of the hunt but will try to take this advice 😅

@@krutplaysaguitar my theory is, the lighter the guitar, with less internal binding and joints, the better it sounds. I'm into old spanish flamenco guitars because they are about half the weight of classicals , and about the only guitars I can feel vibrating thru the neck. , The new (I call them plastic ) hitech cheaper guitars are amazing for clarity and tone. I'm waiting for someone to make a one piece 3d printed guitar.

The notes from this tone wood are more synchronized. I wish I could afford one.

IMO, Dana builds the best acoustic guitar. Every one I have ever played has been outstanding!

Fantastic guitar! Bourgeois tone with the beauty of sinker mahogany and some other subtle appointments, because you can’t hear bling 😏

I'd like to hear the sound when played closer to the sound hole. Many guitars sound similar when played two inches from the bridge, especially in bluegrass situations where it seems that volume is the goal. I have two Bourgeois guitars, a rosewood JOM (Adirondack top) that I had Dana build for me in 1994, and a Country Boy dread with figured mahogany (Adirondack top) from 2008 that I bought used. They sound magnificent. When compared to my other favorites, Collings (one rosewood and one mahogany - 1993 and 2011), they are more balanced in tone; the Collings are a little more bassy. I characterize the tone of the Bourgeois as sexy, the Collings as sweet. I would have a hard time calling an $8500 guitar a workhorse, though. Nice reviews.

Being a poor old man that can barely play cowboy chords, I am certain this is a great instrument (Dana Bourgeois makes fine instruments). However, in my way of thinking, for 8K it should play itself! This is an instrument for a professional. A new Martin D-18 (forward shifted X braced and scalloped) with an Adirondack top (custom shop?) would be about half that cost and still probably be a good guitar for both professionals and amateurs. Goodness, both Eastman and Blueridge are now making instruments that are coming close to sounding as good as a Martin for half (or less) than a Martin. No wonder Dana has partnered with Eastman. It is true one "gets what you pay for," but for most folks that difference in sound and quality are not great enough to off set the 8K sticker price!

It's the latest fad alongside torrefaction and stainless frets.

$8495? EIGHTY. FOUR. NINETY. FIVE?? Yes, Dana’s guitars are great but that seems a bit much…especially for what you term “a workhorse guitar”
Sinker mahogany or not I don’t hear any major difference between it and my 2004 Vintage D. Glad I bought mine years ago.
