The 500 is a very different experience from a 250cc...the engine has a higher torque output and that makes it a completly different riding experience! I had two 500cc (CR and KX) and i loved them both...but the KX500 for me is the best bike ever made!
A lot of people can ride a 250 faster than a lot of people can ride a 500
