- Part 11 (Chapter 2) We finally made it to Queen's castle but we need to make a pit stop first... (and break some things, maybe.)
With my recent Undertale play through still fresh in my mind (and in my heart) I dive into Deltarune, Undertale's parallel story. Thank you for joining me for this first play through, I can't wait to over zealously connect the barely visible dots between Toby Fox's games!

imagine how terrified kris must have felt at the aftermath of spamton neo's fight
The strange entity trapped in their souls guide them to a weird place to talk to a weird person,a puppet just like them that offers what they most want
then after betraying you,the puppet engages in a battle for the sweet sweet FREEDOM SAUCE
and after "freeing" spamton,kris sees what lies ahead for them
a broken marionette,without strings to go around,after attemting to get it's freedom,it just sealed it's fate
imagine the poor child seeing that even if they get what they want,without us pulling the strings,they would not stand without their cursed soul with us imbended in it

Seeing Spamton crash down after being released from his chains that bound him... it was tough on it's own. Now that I can see the parallel between Kris and Spamton it's even harder... Maybe Kris still has hope though, Spamton did say they we're different. Maybe Spamton has been stuck like this for so long he lost his ability to stand on his own. Maybe Kris still has the strength. Kris' very empty/ sparsely decorated room in their hometown is something I think about often though - maybe it's something meaningful, maybe Kris just doesn't do interior design.

The variable dialogue in this game never fails to amaze me! So cool.
Berdley is so well written. He's the type of character i would hate, but even before his character arc, he's just funny and never overstays his welcome. Then his little scene with the light puzzle is so good, and i loved it.

@@caltheuntitled8021 I wasn't an enlightened soul. At first I thought of Berdly as that snively, know-it-all type, that's put in the game to comically fill the stereotype. "He's here *so* you can hate him" type of mentality... but this is Deltarune and even Berdly has a story (also he needs to be protected at all costs.)

If you stand close enough to them for the Soul to show overtop Kris, but not close enough that they attack, and you wait long enough they will smile at the camera :)

There’s a funny bug in Spamton’s fight. Since both the enter and Z keys can be used to charge a big shot, you can hold down Z and then spam enter to shoot big shots extremely quickly. Rather than remove this bug, Toby decided to make Spamton’s attacks harder when you do it.
Also, you asked if wearing Spamton’s merch did anything during his fight. Both the mannequin and frayed bowtie actually give elemental defense against Spamton’s attacks (as well as tasque and tasque manager’s attacks). So far, they are the only obtainable items that give any kind of elemental defense, but there are several unused items that give other types of elemental defense.

Also thank you for the info about Spamton's gear! I'm so paranoid about that stuff after Undertale had soo many character specific items. I keep having to remind myself that I am absolutely going to miss a ton of stuff my first way through, lol.
I'm going to make two separate comments, one exclusively for spamton analysis and another for the video in general.
51:35: Yeah, this whole time he's been saying Kris, then he looks at the screen dead-on and says "you."
1:16:23: It's literally impossible to perceive, but those little mites have pink and yellow eyes.
1:27:49: And now it all clicks into place. How Spamton was able to tell that Kris was a puppet and why Kris was so willing to talk and connect with Spamton and do as he says. Because despite just how different they are, in almost every way, they are probably the only two people who understand what the other is going through.
1:28:18: Well, there's a lot of connective tissue thematically and literally between Jevil and Spamton, which I will elaborate on later in this comment.
1:28:46: And here, I'd like to point out just how compliant Kris has been and continues to be. It's been shown that Kris can move without our input, like when they blocked King's attack on Susie. Yet they just lay there, willingly going along with whatever Spamton was planning.
1:44:26: I don't blame you; in the heat of the moment, you skipped new dialogue (or maybe you didn't; I might have forgotten), but he says, "KRIS!!! TAKE THE DEAL!!!!!! TAKE IT!!!!!!! DO YOU WANT TO BE A [heart] ON A CHAIN YOUR WHOLE LIFE?!?"

Ok, so I'm about to go on a giant speech about Spamton and his character, but you haven't really experienced the full story of Spamton.
Now, assuming you haven't finished the game, before you read this essay, you're going to need to do three things in the game.
1. Leave the basement.
2. Talk to Swatch.
3. Go back to Spamton's store.
Then you'll have all the context for what I'm going to be explaining here.

Ok, assuming you've done them, I'll monologue here.
Spamton is quite possibly the saddest, most heartbreaking character Toby Fox has ever decided to make.
Because when you really lay the cards on the table, all Spamton is is a mentally ill, middle-aged homeless man desperate for one last shot at freedom.
Again, assuming you've done those three things, you'll know now that Spamton is an Addison. And as the Addisons in the city said, it's their job to be marketable.
So Spamton's goal of being super successful wasn't even a personal desire, really, just a cultural one. A good Addison is a successful one, and if he wasn't a successful one, then he wasn't a good one.
(Side note: Since the Addisons are all about appearances, they're facing the wall as they mourn Spamton, since their trademark smiles wouldn't be present.)
But honestly? He was probably better off as a failure, because look at him now.
Whatever the intentions of the guy on the phone were, it led to Spamton's ruin.
And it was likely during his interactions with this strange man that Spamton became obsessed with freedom. And it seemed that the NEO body would be his ticket.
Swatch said he'd "pray" to it nearly every day, and once he was evicted, he desperately tried anyway to get inside the mansion. Impersonating Swatch, trying to hire the sweet cap'n cakes to break in, and likely many others since it's been literally decades since his big shot era (number one, 1997)
Another interesting note is his connection to Jevil. There's a lot-I mean, a whole lot-of stuff connecting these two. But I'd like to point out some superficial things.
One, differing ideology and design. It's obvious, isn't it? Jevil takes his lack of freedom and turns it on its head. "If my choices don't matter, then I can do anything!"
But Spamton, upon stumbling into this revelation, was horrified, so he dedicated his life to his liberty and becoming free.
Design wise, Jevil has a lot of devil motifs, while Spamton has a lot of "holy" motifs. Jevil's hat resembled horns, his talk of hell, and his name was a mashup of Jester and Devil.
Spamton talks of heaven; when you press F1, a cherub heals you; his shop has a bright blue sky; and of course, his NEO body has angelic wings, symbolizing his ascension.
So why is it that he wasn't strong enough to break away from whatever was controlling him? It's unclear.
But what is clear is his genuine sympathy for Kris. Kris is a fellow puppet, someone whose choices don't matter.
Immediately in that first fight, it's abundantly clear that Spamton is trying his hardest to pitch the idea of freedom to Kris, outright refusing your rejection of the deal because that isn't your decision to make.
And once at the store, it's obvious Kris really wants to go along with the plan, as they obey Spamton at every turn, telling Susie and Ralsei to wait behind them and getting the disk in the first place.
1:26:47: Look at how pissed off Kris is when it seems like Spamton's plan was nonsense. They go way beyond just looking at what we told them to.
And 1:28:41: This is integral to this portion. Kris has been shown to be able to move on their own when they blocked King's attack against Susie or when they backed up whenever they talked to Spamton. But here? They just sit there. This begs the question: were they willing to go through with this?
Ultimately, in the end, Spamton attacks Kris, obsessed with removing the SOUL from their body, possibly acquiring it himself.
And despite it, throughout the battle, Spamton says, "I won't force you," over and over, failing to realize that killing Kris is forcing them.
But the ultimate sting is that ending. Spamton's final string is cut, and without his puppeteer to guide him, he simply collapses.
I mean, it's why Kris is so shaken up upon leaving. Spamton tried for decades to liberate himself from hell, consumed his entire life with achieving that one goal, and still failed.
If someone with such
perseverance, intelligence, and patience couldn't succeed, how could they, a goofy, prankster teenager, hope to escape this situation?
I'm uncertain. But Spamton seemed to have hope for them. Maybe, just maybe. That'll be enough.
I haven't read the second half of your comment because I have not yet done the things, but when I do I'm coming right back here!
On another note, I need to get better at reading Kris' body language, it's one of the very few ways we can pick on their feelings, like a "tell" at the poker table. It's so hard with everything that's going on to catch it in the moment, but now that it's on my radar i'll be on the look out!

51:14 "fun" fact about this interaction:
In the code of Deltarune there is a line of code that goes completely unusedv that seems to be a character talking about how they are lost in someplace dark and they're all alone. This text was updated when chapter 2 released, and in the Japanese translation of the game, this unused line of code is translated as well.
The small snippet of words Spampton said was a direct quote from that code.
This just makes me picture Spamton floating around in the abyss waiting for chapter 2 to materialize.

1:30:54 since you aren't going to be doing the Geno route in Undertale, I figured I'd give you some info you would have if you did play it.
In the Geno route, Mettaton becomes Mettaton NEO in order to stop you, and Spamton NEO is in reference to that. In fact, the song that plays during the Spamton NEO fight has a section that references both Mettaton NEO's theme, and a segment that references Mad Dummy/Napstablook who are both Mettaton's cousins
I didn't finish reading this comment because I'm still debating watching a geno run on my own time/ or reacting to a no commentary geno route for youtube. I feel like I'll miss a lot of information if I don't interact with that route at all!

Choosing not to look through the closed doors (like Berdly's) and look through the doors after Susie and Ralsei rejoin you will both yield new dialogue.
Fun Fact the frayed bow tie spamnton sold you if the the best armor you can have for the spamnton neo fight(it has a secret value that is only used while fighting spamnton neo)

With how development going, some undertale characters interactions, QnA with papyrus, a ton of dialogues from scrapped alarm clock app (Kickstarter goal), valentines cards, spamton sweepstakes (almost a web arg, with a live action spamton), eta a lot of content. With occasional big lore drops, Which would be cool to see you react and interpret.
