    Of all of Bells Hells, Orym was the perfect person to hear Laudna’s story. Because he had what the others lacked: context. Because he heard the story from the Tempest and Vox Machina’s discussions. And, above all, he’s just like Laudna: a victim of collateral damage from an act intended for someone else. For Laudna, it was intended to be a warning for Vox Machina. For Orym, it was a consequence of the attack on Keyleth specifically.
    I love that Orym and Laudna have that connection. They lost so much, yet chose to continue living for their own sakes.
    And even when she tried to brush it off, saying it was so long ago… Orym still said, “Respectfully… SO FUCKING WHAT?!” That got to Laudna. And you can tell, even when she still tried to convince him to pay her no mind. He still couldn’t let it go.
    Perhaps that is also why she opened up about her ears. Because she knew he would understand, even without words. And it was the EARS that made him embrace her, that stoked his anger towards the cruelty she had to suffer… and it no doubt gave him another purpose. Another reason to protect.
    “Nobody should have had to face anything like that. I AM sorry, and I’m impressed with you.”
    “Thank you. It’s very kind. It is strange, I don’t think anyone’s ever really apologized for it, it’s not really your place but… it means a lot.”
    Overall, I love that she allowed herself to feel that vulnerable, to drop the smile and feel remorse for her death for the first time in over 30 years. I bet she even allowed herself to cry genuine tears. Her voice even cracked when she thanked him.
    And for her part, Laudna seemed to know how much Orym understood, she saw that same trauma and sense of loss in his eyes. Thus why she said, “I think it’s clear that you empathize because you understand.” Even without knowing everything about his story. Hell, she seemed to understand when he vaguely mentioned losing someone close in the attack once he truly started opening up earlier in the campaign.
    That he also willingly took a level of exhaustion shows that he’s not going to just let this slide… and I bet that when they woke up, Laudna noticed it. Maybe even gave him a look that said, “thank you” and he gives a nod in response. And then one little hand holding before mounting their horses.
    One final note… it hurts even more that we SAW her there in the castle in LOVM. And now the Sun Tree moment will never be the same again.
    Because she was there, all along.

    This is a testament to how good all these people are: many people have hypothesized that Laudna was one of the Sun Tree victims since she said she was from Whitestone, so all she did here was confirm what people already thought; and yet she still made it absolutely profound and heavy and heart-wrenching. The whole "Of course I'm happy, the worst thing that could possibly happen to me already has" line was a full gut-shot 😭

    • @romxxii
      @romxxii Před 2 lety +7

      The earliest tweet about Laudna being a Sun Tree victim was way back in November 16 of last year. At that point, we already knew Laudna came from Whitestone (Pate debuts episode 2, back in October) but didn't have her specific rez date or the circumstances surrounding her resurrection until a few days later. I think TLOVM ep 5 solidified the idea of Laudna = Sun Tree victim more than anything, when the Vex-alike had a similar color scheme to Laudna and the same long black hair.
      Even when the theory gained popularity, there were plenty of folks saying it couldn't be, because the dates didn't line up exactly: The Tide of Bone happened approx 810 PD, which is more than 30 years before the start of C3 (843 PD). Obviously one can easily chalk up the miscalculation to either (a) rounding down, or (b) the undead lady losing her grasp on time (and maybe even sanity) thanks to the undead patron jabbering in her head.
      Point being, it was a popular theory, but it was in no way confirmed until this episode dropped. I think the feelings were divided between complete shock and vindication.

    @megancolleran3921 Před 2 lety +68

    Watching this in a theater was transcendental. I adore Marisha/Laudna on a normal day but after this?
    I’m an only child- I lost both parents while I was in college. I was already emotional over being in a room with other CR fans for the first time. When she said
    _The worst thing that’s ever happened to me has already happened._
    It hit me like a ton of bricks. I don’t emote easily on a normal day- much less in front of other people. I tipped the hat I was wearing down and cried for two minutes after.
    We all had theories, but Marisha delivered this so gut-punchingly well. Yasha’s “I have so many flowers to bring her” was the last time I remember being so moved by a new detail.
    I love Marisha Ray. I love this show and it’s stories. GOD

    I wasn't sure about Orym as a character, not even on ExU but it's scenes like these that make people like me appreciate a character a lot more. I have barely nothing to say about Laudna because even before she dropped the Whitestone bomb, she was my favourite PC this campaign.
    What I really love about this scene is the chemistry that they all have with each other and the level of restraint of everyone at that table, sometimes it is a given because they are professional actors but even with that in mind thy have a level of respect for each that I would want to see in everyone IRL and on the Internet.
    Marisha and Liam are fantastic role players and masters at improvisation.

      Laudna has not aged since she died, decayed a bit but not aged, she was a young woman when beaten and hung therefore a good stand in for a half-elf. She probably wasn't the Keyleth double or she would have mentioned the scars from antlers being nailed into her head as that's a lot more traumatic and noticable than just the ears being modified, it probably would have been part of her description earlier on and places from which black ooze would seep when she takes her form of dread. This means she was the Vex'alhia body effigy hanging from the sun tree.
      The other detail I find interesting (not revealed in the show but a recent publication of Darington press) is at this time Vex'alhia is a mother of 5 and a member of the Council of Tal'dorei as Master of Commerce.
