    LOB is actually the most nostalgic for me personally. The LOB blue eyes art is also the pack art and everyone on the playground knew what it was, but no one had one because it was so hard to pull. I remember my first time seeing one and being amazed that it came from the booster pack. That made it have almost mythical status, similar to how the base set Charizard made us feel. Maybe it's different for me because I grew up in a poor neighborhood, and none of the kids could regularly open booster packs. The SDK and DDS blue eyes were cool, but because they were guaranteed it did not carry nearly the same weight on the playground as LOB. Same thing with the BPT - it was guaranteed and a reprint so it just didn't have that wow factor. A lot of the nostalgia for me comes from the way the cards made us feel when we were kids.
    Upon returning to the hobby in 2019, it made complete sense to me why LOB was the most expensive, and it is still my personal favorite. I do agree that the art on the DDS/SDK is more nostalgic/objectively better, but I also like the LOB art. All of that said, no one knows where the market will take us next, and all three versions are obviously desirable for their own reasons. Just thought I'd share my own experience/memories.

      I actually don't like the lob BECAUSE I never had one or even seen it very often as a kid. The nostalgia isn't there. I'd actually sell a 1st ed lob psa 10 and buy 3 sdk 1st ed. Psa 10 if I had one. So many fond memories with the sdk one.

    • @gisaquid
      @gisaquid Před 5 měsíci

      Agreed! I’m nostalgic for both as I remember both arts from the playground back in the day. SDK/DDS definitely has the nostalgia factor and is the most attractive art by most people’s standards. The LOB however is pretty close to that nostalgia wise for me personally and is a card I’d love to own at some point in 1st Ed!

    I just purchased a PSA 7 SDK. The SDK will end up getting the recognition it deserves. It is the card with the most nostalgia and overall that's what will make it consider it the holy grail. As long as the pop report stays low on it. Which I'm pretty sure it will because almost EVERYONE played that card hard when it came out.

    I like SDK the most because of the iconic art and it has the most nostalgic value. Back then, I didn't even know LOB Blue-Eyes existed and I'm not the biggest fan of the art either. DDS just looks so pretty though, if people are looking for aesthetics, DDS is the clear winner.

  • @jimmyha1898

    I personally like DDS blue-eyes the best, then SDK then LOB. I am one of those that think nostalgia is one of the biggest factors. I mean the people who grew up with DDS and SDK that are CEO's or doctors or whatever are gonna want the copy they used to play with when they were kids. DDS and SDK both have that sweet nostalgia to them. I remember pulling my LOB blue-eyes and going wtf is this ugly thing. The bigger question is....will Dark Magician Girl MFC also become a grail? In a well lit area hold the card out of sleeve protection by fingers on outer surface embracing the card between your fingers holding it in place then move the card in a rotation so that the light moves up and down the holo if there are waves in the foil you will ne able to tell of not the entirety of the card is smoothed....

    Regarding the lob blue eyes - it's not about the art, it's about the fact that it's the from the first yugioh pack making it inherently more rare than the other two, which you can get from games. No matter how ugly the art, at the end of the day people will want the lob because it's harder to get (not in psa 10, just in general) imo.

    If you look at real sales the DDS has had real sales of 20k and 25k when you cannot find a psa 10 lob 1st that has been sold they are only listing them at 200k and you can’t get one because there aren’t any listed at realistic prices. A listed item is not indicative of the price once a real sale happens that places a value on a card. Unless someone actually buys a lob 1st psa 10 then we won’t know what it’s actually worth.

    Always love discussing investing in old school Yugioh! I've been investing in N/A unlimited LOB Blue Eyes myself. Got 3 so far lol, and I'm still looking to add more to the collection, because like you said, it is Yugiohs version of Charzard. I can't afford 1st edition so this is what I decided to invest in lol. Also you guys should look into investing in the 1st Blue Eyes White Dragon released in booster packs from Japan, you can find the original Blue Eyes LB-01 mint for $100 USD, which is the original artwork from the TV series + NA starter deck. (An unopened booster pack from that set goes for $50, so you guys do the math). Fun fact the Japanese version of Blue Eyes had the original artwork in the booster packs, and the alternate art (the N/A lob artwork) in their starter deck. It's kind of a shame they swapped the artwork when released in N/A, I still like the card, just not as iconic. Hope you keep discussing old school Yugioh in your videos :)

      The differences in price you see is VERY often from:
      - unlimited
      - DIFFERENT LANGUAGES (Portuguese, Spanish, European, Australian, Asian-English)
      - fakes
      - awful condition
      If there's a close-to-mint or mint 1st edition American SDK blue eyes for sale, assume it's gonna be 1k or above.

    I have 3 gem mt 10's Japanese Kaiba briefcase BEWD's. Likely not worth much right now, but they have that DDS rarity style. They look so good, I favor the SDK/DDS/Anime art. Anything else really doesn't appeal to me. Same goes for the stone tablet pose, used multiple times. in space, or on the tower. Just too many alt arts out now.

  • @F-rem
    @F-rem Před 3 lety +5

    I own this specific PSA 10 LOB wavy bewd (28575383) copy you showed in your video and I also own PSA 10 SDK and DDS so lets say I am unbiased. LOB bewd is the actual grail not because it is the prettiest but because it is the only version of the card that combines relative scarcity, printing variations, being the first english TCG Blue eyes (March 8th 2002), being more likely to not grade well and finally being the only of these that you could only pull from a pack. I think people nowadays dont realize how important that is. Back in 2002 almost all the kids had an SDK bewd either 1st ed or UNL cause you could just go to the store and buy it but having pulled a BEWD from a loose pack (cause most kids where I am from couldnt afford a whole box) that was rare. Same with DDS. NGL, the DDS bewd is pretty af but it doesnt mark many boxes other than that. SDK is really nostalgic but its blessing and curse is that everyone had it. It is a pro and a con at the same time imho. Yes it makes it very nostalgic fs but trying to find it never had the "gamble" and "lucky" aspect of the hobby. And yes opening packs has always been a bit of a gamble. :) My 2 cents.

    • @solemnyugioh
      @solemnyugioh  Před 3 lety +3

      That's a funny coincidence! Thanks for your input. I'll try to give my views on that:
      - The only one you can pull from a pack: I agree. That's its major selling point. The luck factor to pull it pack fresh right now is huge. That gamble aspect might just make it win.
      - Scarcity: 1st ed sdk is actually still insanely rare. You may know kids who owned unlims, but there weren't many kids with 1st eds. Imo, LOB and SDK both win when it comes to scarcity. Saying "everyone had it" is the same level of disingenuous as saying everyone had charizard. Sure, everyone had base set unlim, but not everyone had 1st ed. That's a really big deal imo.
      Regardless, here's my biggest issue: inherent demand.
      While LOB blue eyes absolutely has the gamble rarity to it due to being from a booster box, that alone isn't actually crucial. There's a bunch of Harry Potter and Star Wars cards from that era that are just as hard to pull as that LOB. Yet those are selling for pennies (so to speak). I can find sealed corn flakes boxes from 2002 that are incredibly rare to find sealed, but again; I couldn't pay someone to take those off my hands. You can have the rarest object in the world, but if inherently the demand is lower, that price isn't gonna move.
      If we look at opinions about LOB blue eyes from a wide variety of people who grew up on YGO, collect YGO and invest in YGO over the decades, the general consensus has always been: "god that thing is ugly". It's only recently, since cards have gone up the past years and LOB is now at the insane price, that people -suddenly- claim they always loved the LOB blue eyes.
      And now that new-found popularity creates a reputation that just feeds itself. The price is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's grail => price goes up => so it's grail => so price goes up.
      You could argue the entire card game as a collectible market is currently functioning that way and I would, to an extent, agree, but if all of that is pulled away (and it could be), I believe inherent demand from the nostalgia-driven consumer will matter and I truly feel LOB has a really really big issue then. Meanwhile, even before the collectors market was huge, DDS blue eyes was already loved by many due to its fancy bling and iconic art, despite not being as rare as either LOB and SDK.
      This is why I feel the debate isn't settled yet. All 3 have things going for them and against them. If this market stays completely speculator-driven forever, I believe LOB will win forever but I also believe that's incredibly dangerous.

    I just bought a 1st Edition (American English) LOB-001 Blue Eyes in a PSA 4 for about $1150 ($1300 after taxes and fees). Planning to hold it for 10 years and sell around 2032. Who knows how well this comment will age, worst case scenario it's just a piece of my childhood since I was a kid back when Yugioh first started and it's worth the sentiment for me even if it fails financially.

      @solemnyugioh  Před 3 lety

      They have been moving up a lot too. But yes, I feel they're undervalued. Regardless, there's some reasons. They're not as pretty as DDS, they're not from boosters so "easier" to turn sealed into the card and not everyone grew up on them like on the starter decks. All those tiny reasons definitely add up.
