He's a really nice guy, and I knew it would make his day if I started calling him dad. But after calling his name so long it just felt awkward somehow (I was a stupid kid back then, so bear with me.) My brain just took that decision from my hand. I guess it must have been tired of working itself overtime and just went, "Screw it. You're calling him dad now." And I did. And it was the best gaffe I've ever made.
I just found out that was pretty much how my step-dad reacted. He didn't give me any reaction, but my mom said he was gushing and all smiles that I called him dad. He knew I was gonna be a tough one to crack because of trauma caused by my bio dad. I'm glad he stuck around to see my walls come down. I miss him every day.
