    The colours are vivid. Aren't we lucky to have such a wonderful record of the past? Also- that London to Manchester train time of 3 hours 10 minutes. How many people really care that now it is about 2 hours, but every aspect of your journey will be shitty...even down to having reserved a specific seat but having to worry that it was reserved by someone else. Or having a seat with no window view. Such a terrible design. Richard Branson, the metaphorical snake oil merchant, sold us it all.

    " and by 1980 our roads will have to take twice as many goods as are sent today" as the narrator said, seamed a long way ahead in 1963. Now 1980 seams to me to be a very, very long time ago... its 2019. How time flies.. and soon 2019 is miles behind us...

      when the film was made 1980 was 17 years in the future, now it is 41 years in the past. a span of 58 years!

    Huge white elephants the marshalling yards, within three years there would be freightliner containers.
    Blue pullman white elephants as well , ordinary folks couldnt afford to travel on them.
    Car was king, still is .😉

    Lockdown March /April 2020 gave a rare taste of the 1960's for a short time...the roads were far emptier....and the air cleaner.🌈

    • @Flossie1985
      @Flossie1985 Před rokem

      The air wasn't cleaner in the 1960s. Thick smog from factory chimneys and every house having coal fires was common. The reason we got the National Speed Limit was a series of motorway collisions in thick smog in 1964.

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 Před rokem

      @@Flossie1985 A quick google showed it was a ''Foggy Autumn'' in 1965 that brought in national speed limits, fog occurs everywhere, rurally as well..London in recent years has shown horrendous yellow smogs that hang above the City visible from the M4, hence all the panic now about low emission zones.
      I do agree that coal fires, and coal fired power stations in 1950's and 1962 killed people {a relative died young in December 1962..She had TB anyway, and the smog exacerbated it.
      London wasn't as busy with cars then, really empty streets, but coal and coke fires were common.
      In rural areas, the air was much sweeter.

      @@Oakleaf700 You only have to ask anyone who was around in the 1960s and they'll tell you how common thick fog was compared to now, not just in cities, but in less built up towns as well. That's not to say less visible pollution doesn't exist now, but the air wasn't clean then.

    Not only did they have hard shoulders but they were a different colour
    These days your lucky to get hard shoulders these days with the so called " Smart Motorways "
    Death traps more like.
    They will be scrapped very soon after wasting Billion of pounds and the loss of several lives

    Interesting what crap was considered the benefits of progress back in those days. Concrete beats landscape, speed regardless of energy cost… who said everything was better back then? Reconsider it was because the road to hell barely started back then…

    The narrator should have learned how to pronounce place names. It's not Gat Hurst, it's Gathurst, as in thirsty. Good video though.

    I'm offended by this clip, as there are no people of colour, where's the diversity? it's racist and shows white privilege.

      You're joking, right? Anyway, it's not racist it's just that there were a lot less coloured people back then. Most of these scenes involve cars and the like, which very few coloured people owned back then.
