- The arguments for and against building by-passes, featuring Transport Minister Ernest Marples, how these can be built through many urban areas, how objections to new routes can be overcome and what effect they are having on previously swamped towns and villages.
Wow, Ministry of Transport, St Christopher House, Southwark Street. Never thought I'd see that place on CZcams. Long gone now, was demolished ages ago. Worked in the Traffic Engineering Division there from 1972 to 1978, this video stirred up a few old memories.
The people and communities back then seem different. I can't put my finger on it.
Happier? Slimmer? Smarter?
I can.
Lack of immigrants springs to mind 🤔
Pen paper and a sliderule, no computers or calculators back then.
There were mechanical calculators back then. They even used them to design the bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Abacus has been used for about 4,000 years.
Oh, such blind optimism!
That was a tramp or rather 'gentleman of the road' walking down the street. Used to see them often passing through villages, always generally polite and well spoken fellows.
2:05 Ernest Maples the real villain behind the Beeching cuts. Family business - road building. Our severely overcrowded, gridlocked roads, towns and cities, increasing danger and pollution while vital alternative rail routes are now grass tracks is all down to this man!
Ahh yes, a conflict of interests which = corruption and the loss of many railway lines
The problems started before Marples. One of the previous Ministers of Transport in the 1950s (my best guess is it was Harold Watkinson but don't quote me) had forbidden BR to raise their fares or freight movement costs as an attempt to control inflation whilst BR's costs rose and market share fell. This price control failed to have the desire effect, but did take a railway that was almost breaking even to one losing £300,000 per day.
Tories for ya!
But they're not the real villains though, they are just the puppets being told what to do, same goes for all the politicians we have.
The Wanderer ! bless him; a man after my own heart (and my last ambition in life, nearly there! just a week to go).
Did anyone notice the alpine pop lorry at the zebra crossing at the beginning 🤣🤣 10p on the bottle as well 👍
Can you timestamp it please? The only truck I saw was for Holsten Pils 0:41
Oh gawd, poor old Exeter!
I think Hitler previously arranged for more damage to historic Exeter than was subsequently finished off by Exeter's 'planners'.
The Maidstone bypass is now M20 J5-J8
Village never bounced back. Never has been rediscover.
2:22 A Mr.Prosser was seen taking notes
5:25...Very attractive area. :-(
Markyate High street is now end to end parked cars
good driving conditions doesnt always mean good living conditions
2:04 isn't that the lovely Ernest Marples? Didn't he have to do a runner to Monaco, to avoid inquiries about his businesses and tax evasion?
I think the swine introduced double yellow lines as wel
Yes, Marples, trashing the countryside with roads that his construction interests profited from, then ripped the heart out of the railways through his mate Beeching.
@@davidinger961 Single Yellow lines and Traffic Wardens as well
Looks like he was giving the two fingered salute at 5.45
Marples roadways! Conning git!
6:50...Blimey, couldn't they have built the by-pass a bit further away from the town?
At least they built a by pass, today it would be impossible, the "environmentalists" who are living in houses built on what's was once ancient woodland wouldn't approve.
@@prp3231 i doubt there is any ancient woodland in GB, the entire island would have been cut multiple times.
Eleven million vehicles in 1962 on U.K. roads. Now there are around thirty million vehicles on this small island. What next, bypasses bypassing bypasses ?
stevie g that already has happened decades ago.
Failure of governments for decent public transport
Stevie. Instead of criticism, why not offer a solution? Here's the problem, rising population, increase in car and vehicle ownership, a heaving railway infrastructure and people's wish to travel for leisure. Any suggestions?
They are pushing more for this electric car with puppets like Elon Musk, which isn't new nor eco friendly because they use the same mining as with fossil fuels, basically it's a big con. I think the aim for electric motors is one of increase restriction of travel, the car will eventually be remotely monitored and controlled and you will only be able to travel where they tell you.
That traffic used to bring with it money.
We are locusts
You wouldn't get house moving today
Thought someone had run that dog over for a second...
England was better back then.
Yes those of us who were teenagers in the 1960's had the best time ever. It will NEVER be repeated.
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Thought that dog would get run over in street
Minister for transport....is tarmac black? Permission granted....
Not a hard hat anywhere
We need more road building like this. Ban bikes and women drivers and we have utopia. I’m serious.
