- In this video, Floyd Mayweather gives a heartfelt speech with at the 59th annual WBC Convention in Mexico. In attendance while Mayweather was giving his speech was Sugar ray Leonard, Eddy Reynoso, Julio Cesar Chavez, Roberto Duran, Erik Morales, Ilunga Makabu and many more who gave him a Mexican chant after his emotional speech about boxing and why he loves the sport and respects all champions in boxing. Past, present, and future. Floyd Mayweather also got awarded a special WBC belt by Mauricio Sulaiman for being the most loyal champion to the WBC.

This shit made me 🥲 all my idols in one place hanging, simply imagining the hardship and discipline these guys put themselves through to get to where they are is something I always admired. I still remember as a kid I couldn’t wait to finish classes cause it meant I would get to go home and change so I could go to the gym and train I remember picturing myself as Delahoya,Chávez, Mayweather, Leonard 😅 man oh man
And just think about the MILLIONS of kids that they indirectly saved that would have died in the street, but where inspired to get into Boxing, Martial arts and MMA to be like their heroes.
I’m a Martial artist at the core, but Duran, Ray, Chavez and a few others who aren’t present inspired me to implement boxing into my training. My dream would be to hug them and thank them for the positive impact they’ve had on me, but I think Floyd spoke for all of us who love them!🙏🏾👊🏾💪🏾👍🏾

He was the best of his generation of sure, but Mike achieved cult status with a massive media machine behind him, same with Ali, Chavez, and McGregor. For all of Floyd's success, boxing had already stopped receiving the type of coverage enjoyed in Tyson's era. Also, as you said Floyd wasn't necessarily compelling or charismatic, he was the villain, and most people went to see his fight in hopes of seeing him lose. Lastly, Floyd's greatest legacy is the sorry stat of boxing we have now, where every boxer attempts to protect the undefeated title at all costs. Under Mayweather promotions Tank has thrived by this blueprint. Mayweather will always be acknowledged as an atg, but I highly doubt he'll be respected as one.
