    Currently a spectacular eruption of Mount Etna is ongoing with associated several hundred meter two lava fountains. This ongoing eruption is quite typical for the volcano, simply representing a paroxysm

    It's been awhile, but it seems to me that I remember when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted that people said Katla would erupt a few years after Eyjafjallajökull always. I would love to know if that is how it has been in Iceland. Is Katla overdue? If not, I would love to hear more about the volcanoes of Iceland.

    • @jjMcCartan9686
      @jjMcCartan9686 Před 2 lety +4

      There has been a historic uncanny correlation between Eyjafjallajökull erupting & katla following soon after leading some to speculate that both volcanoes share a joint magma chamber but new studies seem to point towards that they have separate magma Chambers & also katla is much taller than eyjafjallajökull & much more ice basically 4 glaciers pressing down on it much like the alaskan volcanoes & ice plays a big factor in Iceland,alaska,& Antarctica.

      @Sunny_Now_and_Then Před 2 lety

      @@jjMcCartan9686 Thanks for the response. I would be happy if Katla stays quiet and if the Reyjkanes volcano is not any type of explosive eruption when and if it comes. I prefer the eruptions of volcanoes south of the equator.

    • @gslifelix
      @gslifelix Před 2 lety +1

      Historically speaking, Katla is overdue for an eruption and so is Hekla. But history can only tell us so much.
      I hope Katla stays dormant, she has the potential for a very destructive eruption that could ruin huge infrastructure and put towns at risk. Not to mention the ash cloud that would follow which could disrupt not only air-traffic but also weather conditions throughout Europe.

    I don't trust Taal. Is it possible the magma is still there but the conduit previously allowing the gas to vent at absurd levels has become blocked thus causing pressure to build with possible unfortunate consequences?

    Great video as always and keep up the good work! Is there anything going on at the Mayon volcano? The reason that I am asking is because I am getting mixed information about a possible eruption and/or de-gassing at the summit. There was a video on here that said Mayon was erupting again, but I am not so sure.
    I think the person who made the video was just trying to scare the heck out of people because they are bored out of their skulls or like spreading mis-information about things. So I thought that I would ask since you know a lot about Science and volcanoes. Thank you for your videos.

    What was the largest eruption in Greece in the last 1milion years?

    • @warpdriveby
      @warpdriveby Před 2 lety +7

      I'm pretty sure the Thera/Santorini eruption was one of the largest in the last several million years period, not just Greece. The only ones in the same category are Tambora, and Lake Tuapo, all three are thought to be VEI 7s. It would be an almost unimaginable cataclysm if it occurred today and I suspect would cause several million deaths immediately and several times more via famines, water pollution, and an extreme shift toward temperatures usually associated with glacial increase.

      @temosofthecommunistrepubli2637 Před 2 lety +4

      @@warpdriveby no, geologyhub has made a vid about an eruption the predated human civilization which was 11% bigger in Nisiros. But i don't know if there has been any larger explosions.

    • @caiolucas8257
      @caiolucas8257 Před 2 lety +1

      @@warpdriveby It was one of the largest, the lesser known Kos Nisyros eruption was larger than Santorini's eruption. There have been more VEI 7s in the last 1 million years, but the ones you mentioned are pretty much the most talked ones. It's believed the 540 and the 1452 mystery eruptions were VEI 7s.

    • @warpdriveby
      @warpdriveby Před 2 lety

      @@caiolucas8257 Yeah, I worded the part about Taupo and Tambora really badly, I was thinking of ones in recorded history, there will have been at least two VEI 8s in the last 1 million years and many other 7s than the two. I've been very interested in the increase in discoveries of oceanic/subsurface volcanoes. It does appear there have been many more, and with very far reaching effects. One thing I wonder is, have there been underwater large igneous provinces and did that sort of activity cause or contribute to any of the mass extinctions? We saw what was a comparatively minor event at Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai, and It was awe inspiring to many.

    from where i live, there is less than 50kms to 7 volcanic systems that have erupted in the past 2000 years, the last lavaflow stopped just about 4km away from where i live, about 1000 years ago, so i guess, if a prolonged eruption period has started... i might have to move sometime in the future
