Combat Mission Gone Wrong! Watch to See the Incredible A-4E Rescue over Vietnam in 1966

- In February 1966, A-4 Skyhawk was one of the most important (although not the most glamorous) assets of US Navy in the Vietnam War. It was the workhorse that carried out numerous strikes and faced stronger and stronger opposition all the time. USS Ticonderoga was an Essex class 'small deck' carrier operating on Yankee Station. Her Skyhawks were launched against a coastal gun battery that had attacked an American destroyer. Bad weather and strong AAA allowed for only one destroyed gun but the flight of Skyhawks lead by Lt Cdr Render Crayton continued south in search of targets of opportunity. They found some railway cars in a siding and attacked them. The site however was well protected by camouflaged AAA.

Man this is getting even far better than that discovery show about air battles, if only you could have had access to the real pilots to interview them about their experience... yet, your channel is still young, maybe one day in the future, cheers 🍻👍😀👌😉😄
Well, eventually we might get to that. In the case of that South African video, two pilots who participated in the battle contacted me, but only as a reaction on the video. Thanks for your support!
A great job. Congratulazion! I am italian, old year 68, and I had lived this period and I love the Scooter, the US Navy and the Marines.
@@sandycaine Thanks! I'm very glad that you like the videos. I like that period too and there's more come!
@@showtime112 I am very glad to know this, but one thing makes me curious: I saw the ships used and they are the original ones used in the NAM war, where did you find them? You know now that there is the Forrestal available to make a naval group with those modern DCS is a fish out of water. Hi.
@@sandycaine That ship was a Fletcher class destroyer, you can find the mod here:
www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/de/files/1240056/
I'm not sure what destroyer it was exactly but USN was still using mostly WWII era ships, modified to some extent.
You do a great job putting together videos that keep peoples attention while conveying interesting historical aviation events.
Thank you very much! Comments like this are very helpful.
It's a nice break from those controversial themes 😀
They are good for business but can be a bit tiresome :)
Well, that's Showtime112 for ya'll, folks! Great videos with awesome music and history facts presented as realistically as possible within DCS. 😎👍🏻🍻
If only there were more assets to work with - it would be even better!
Cheers, mate!
Thanks one more time! Well, let's hope that we get more assets soon. It's been mostly warbirds and WWII recently. Perhaps ED will surprise us with an announcement as the end of the year approaches......
@@showtime112 👍🏻
Well done and very informative, as always!
Thanks for your positive comment!
Excellent ¡ Thanks for recreating this historical event during the Vietnam War. Greetings from Mexico City.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Love your channel 👍
Thank you very much! Keep watching!
Thoroughly enjoy watching your historical videos! Just wish your earlier tutorial vids were in English! I'm a new pilot in the DCS world.
Thanks for your positive comment. Those tutorial were aimed at 'local' market. There were already plenty of English tutorials so I didn't feel like competing with them.
@@showtime112 No worries! I'll find a tutorial somewhere, keep up the amazing work!
Very well done! Showtime112, congratulations. Yes those days, pilots could do many runs over the targets as they like and caused many unnecessary issues.
Thanks a lot for yet another positive comment! I'm happy to see people watch these older videos too.
Thank you for clarifying the limitations of simulating aircraft for historic purposes, especially in DCS. Other channels, whom I shall not name, fail to mention a disclaimer or even represent history at all. I hop ewe can see your take on a US Navy Iron Hand flight using the A-4 Skyhawk and the Shrike Missile.
Thanks for commenting. As for other channels, if you are thinking about the same one I am, they don't take these things too seriously :) There is an A-4 Iron Hand story that I plan to reenact. In May 1972. Dennis Sapp flew two such missions in one day and received DFC for it.
Beautifully done. Thanks for sharing. Being a history buff I really enjoyed your video.
Thank you! You are my main target audience 😁
I can't wait until a good F-4 Phantom cockpit is designed! Preferably an earlier model like the B, C. And D!
Should be soon. The first one will definitely be the E model. But Heatblur says they will release a naval version too, sometime in the future.
And to catch a 3 wire trap at the end. Nice video as usual!
Thanks. And to be perfectly honest, that was AI landing. I haven't practiced Skyhawk carrier landings much 😁
Loving the music to these vids.
This one is possibly my favorite.
My absolute favorite aircraft!!!!! //Lars And brilliantly done!!!!
Thank you for commenting!
This is a better than watching history channel keep up the good work
Thank you very much! More to come soon.
I love the A4, "Scooter". Hope whatever was in those railway cars was worth the loss of an A4...............
It's a very charming airplane, I agree. As for their targets in Vietnam, it seems that pretty often they were not worth the losses. Not sure about this particular case.
Hey Showtime, amazing vid, as usual, thanks for all the work and research you do!!! Love your channel! One question, what ammo did they use to bust the gun bunker? Did they already had JDAM munitions? Thanks
Hey! Thanks for the feedback. This was long before JDAMs and they used dumb bombs almost exclusively in Vietnam. There were some guided weapons such as Bullpup, Walleye TV-guided bomb or even laser guided bombs in later phase if the war. But that was all used in a small percentage.
Showtime 112 the AN PRC 90 was the pilot best friend survival radio, many pilots own there lives to this simple inventions survival radio, the Helicopters brave pilots and brave PJ crews during the Vietnam war example Bat 21. The German Luftwaffe world war 2 was the first to installed survival radio, the British copy this design and idea and the American fellow suit.
Thanks for commenting and contributing to the topic!
Nice to hear something other than Fortunate Son playing in a Vietnam era video
There is a whole bunch of royalty free songs in the YT audio library that can be used by creators. Of all that I heard, this one is probably my favorite.
@@showtime112 it is a pleasant change of pace, however much I might like CCR, I can only hear FS so many times lol
The A-4 is a flying masterpiece, and one of my favorite aircraft ever!
A true classic! Thanks for commenting!
Great Video. I can see the work you put in. I did a video of the shootdown of Iran Air 655 and I had to play the mission like 7 times to get even close to the correct footage, and I still had to edit. So I can have some idea how long it takes to do one of these and make it look even halfway acceptable. And you do a very good job. If you ever need a second human pilot for any of these let me know. On a side note, someone asked about Israeli aircraft from the war of attrition. You're right that there aren't many assets available, however there is a very good IAF skin for the Mirage 2000 which is passable as a Mirage III. Sadly the F-4 Phantom in DCS is terrible looking, or I'd be having more fun with that as an AI jet. Anyway, hats off to the work you put it on this.
Thanks for the comment. I'll try to check out your video later. As for the repetition, I sometimes do over 20 takes to get anything close to the desired outcome. I'm actually considering doing videos with other humans for the more complicated stuff so we might try something one day.
Regarding the Mirage 2000 with Israeli skin, I used that initially but then the VSN Mirage III mod appeared. Neither has the right cockpit anyway. Plus, Mirage 2000 module has a very serious flaw if you are a video creator. Replay track never, ever works on that module.
F-4 is a very old model in DCS but I'm kinda hoping that ED will announce it as the next module in the end of the year video. Warbirds and helos are fine but I really love jets.
@@showtime112 I didn't know about the replay track bug, actually explains alot.
@@stephensanford5273 Yeah. There are some tricks, you often have to set AI to 'nor respond to threat', this sometimes helps with the tracks. But then you get a lot of comments such as 'hey, why didn't they do any evasive maneuvers' 😁
Još jedan odličan video. 👍
Hvala na podršci!
Good old camera effect.
Thanks! I think it gives a good documentary feel.
Very well done sir, I subscribed
Welcome aboard! I appreciate the support!
Nice video, beautiful intro music
Thanks. This is one of the best songs I found in the YT library. I've been sitting on it for a while.
Quite realistic showing the A-4 Skyhawks heavily laden with bombs and fuel dipped after clearing the deck before gaining altitude
It's a community mod but it is just as good as any commercial module.
Excellent video. There is no A-4C in the DCS simulator?
Thank you! This variant of the A-4 is the only one available. Amazingly, it's a free mod but it's not worse than the commercial modules.
It’s hard to believe that the Greek pilot put the Master Arm unaware
It's not impossible. That RAF Phantom pilot who shot down a Jaguar did something like that.
Great video! It's a shame we don't have any yugoslav planes to recreate the shootdown of 2 J-21 Jastreb's in Šibenik :/
Thanks! Theoretically, they can be approximated by Mb-339.
@@showtime112 Great idea! I tried it too with the 339 but there is no yugoslav like livery for it,i think ai would be hard to set up though.
Commendable 🙏🏾
Thanks for another comment!
Nice vid bro,but what happened with the music? My ears almost died when i opened the vid to watch it,and it wasnt full sound volume and i didnt had headphones
Well, the music is there but perhaps it is a bit more subtle than some others. Personally, this song is one of my favorites among the royalty free ones I found.

@@showtime112 totalno neočekivano 😱
One author said that he never went into even a small town after the Viet Nam war, that didn't have at least one dead soldier. They told us that 55,000 died. Ridiculous. It was way higher. And they died for nothing, because a general from WWII decided to fight it like it was western Europe. Tanks in a jungle? Are you serious? The only people who did damage beyond their own casualties were the Special Forces guys who fought the enemy on their own terms. Big battallions don't work in a jungle. Neither do tanks.
why was the destroyer so close to the shore?
Ditto on what Ed said.
Thank you for your comment!
You mentioned madox and Tonkin but didn't name destroyer that was attacked? Sorry for commenting ol chap❤
Showtime 112 from all of your video featuring AA (despite some limitation to visualize it) is it safe to say that AA only effective when the situation is right ? Seem to me AA only effective against CAS and tied up fighter
Visualizing a proper AAA in DCS is quite hard. When you increase the number of flak, it starts to affect FPS. But generally, I'd say that AAA is more about saturating the sky. Of course, the gunners did often aim at particular aircraft but I think a lot had to do with luck.
@@showtime112 what about MANPAD and big SAM like s300 ? Im really curious how all anti air work on jets as they not getting explained that well on internet
Sorry to ask such long question mate
How did you did you time it? It's even more detailed than Grim Reaper channel.
Also are you going to make a Russian Airforce boombing campaign on Syria and Israel's bombing campaign in War Of Attrition 1969-70
What do you mean by 'timing it'? As for Russians in Syria, I made two videos on that. Generally, I would do more but it's hard to find details about their operations. As for the War of Attrition, there aren't many assets used by Israelis in that period. Essentially, it's just the Skyhawk. But I might find an interesting story about that airplane in that conflict and cover it.
@@showtime112 as in set to automatically shootdown the skyhawk or was it down by normally as you played the game?
F-4s were also used in that War of Attrition, I'm surprised you covered I do Pakistan and Iran Iraq war people usually don't care cause it's third world countries. The channel Binkov covered the Mig 23MLs of Cuba against South African Mirage F1s
@@bskiez To be honest, I kinda mixed the footage. The Skyhawk shot down here was a wingman. I just ejected from mine and then combined it with the scene of the second plane getting hit.
As for Indo-Pak and Iran-Iraq wars, I find them interesting because they featured well known fighter jets. Regarding South African Mirages and Cuban MiGs, DCS World currently lacks the assets to do that but F1 and MiG-23 will both be released as modules so I'll deal with that story too.
@@showtime112 that was quite an ingenious plan, good! As for South Africa You can do a operation askari or protea but you might most be interested in Operation Excite/Hiti whenever you get the jets. Battle of Cassinga might work if you have Buccaneers you can read about it on Wikipedia you'd love it.
When you talk about the hump, do you mean the spine on top? The MiG-21 has one too and I've always wondered what its purpose is.
Fuel storage, instruments, Or even aerodynamics?
Yes, it is the dorsal (spinal) thing. That is additional avionics. Which was quite bulky in the 60s 😁
What's that LABS alarm?
That happens when the bombs are released. LABS is in fact a separate system for weapons delivery but I believe the developers are still using it on the module.
I love the history you add into these. I really hate that you have to out that little disclaimer that this isn't actually Vietnam..... I cant believe people actually get their panties in a wad about it. Just enjoy the video.
Thank you for your comment. Speaking of comments, people complaining about those inaccuracies are not even the worst. Bismarck from Aviation History Channel made a video about the dumbest comments he got. I've got a nice little collection myself and I consider doing a video about them someday 😁😁😁
Please watch something else. Priceless
These videos sometimes attract the wrong crowd :)
@@showtime112 your work is priceless. I'm retired Usaf and I respect your effort and research. Keep it up.

82ND AIRBORNE
You are correct Sir!! " The take down " was the best tune.
Please edit your videos to be 4 minutes instead of 20, you'll get instant success by doing that. Thanks, hope you're doing well!
I'm not sure about that. I wouldn't even know how to make them that short. I probably wouldn't even like them myself. I'd say that it is mostly the young generation that has problems concentrating for longer than a few minutes. And young generation doesn't care about history anyway 😁 But I might experiment and try to do a short video covering some simple story.
@@showtime112 I'm 44 years old, i don't have concentration problem, and i find your videos very interesting, but they have a very slow pase. All of your takes are almost the same: from the cockpit, then from outside of the plane, then from really far away. It gets tedious. Don't get me wrong, i like your videos and history most of all, but i still think they are too long. Have a great day.
@@brunogiacometti2486 I can only remember one similar comment so far but I will still take your comment seriously. I'll release a poll about video length to see if this is this is a more common sensation among the viewers.
@@showtime112 great, hope it helps! Have a great Sunday!
The "Coastal battery" is a "Atlantic Wall" type, not a NVA gun.....the few photos from Vietnam show almost buried guns with a lot of camouflage,
Not much of a choice there. I tried one of new towed guns, didn't look right.
@@showtime112 Of course, about USA you have a lot of options......NVA is very limited.
@@alejandrocasalegno1657 I think those guns were probably dug in somehow and covered by nets. We got some towed WWII guns and I originally intended to use them but couldn't get that 'dug in and camouflaged' effect.
